Warsaw Rising civil victims list

Hello,

This is brand new database available on Warsaw Rising Museum site

http://www.1944.pl/ofiary-cywilne.html

unfortunately it is only in Polish. For those who don't know Polish - it is enough to enter family name where SZUKAJ is written.

Best Regards
Pawel Kossowski

We have seven members thus far including myself who have expressed interest in this project proposal. We are still looking for more to establish a pool of volunteers that will give us numbers to work with and a firmer proposal to PISM. If you feel you can help out please let me know.

Thanks Mark

There's no requirement to read/speak Polish (I can't) there will be enough folks who can. Once certain terms/words/titles etc are pointed out to you it gets easier.? Again we would not be translating a document's contents only cataloging its relevancy, ie for example military, government, civilian etc.? No one is insisting but if you can make it to London that would be great, it's strictly your choice. For myself I will go but likely tie it with a vacation to Europe or a visit with friends in UK.

Hi Chris. We will be relocating to the UK in about 2 to 3 months. I am really hoping that my husband finds work in London or Hampshire, in which case, I would also be more than happy to assist. It would not be on a full time basis, as I am hoping to find a half day job there, and then be with my kids in the afternoon. However, I am a night owl, so if it is an option, I can help in the evenings and on weekends

Thanks Izabela!

No time has been set yet, we are still waiting to see how many are interested. Once I have a better sense of numbers then a proposal will be put forward to PISM. As for the documents it "will only be cataloging", any in-depth searching, critical scrutiny or translation of their contents would be very time consuming and is better left for future researchers etc.

HI Chris

I would be more than happy to get involved however I work full time and the archives at the Sikorski Institute are only open during the week. If the project will continue next year I can take? few days off. If anything could be done at home or over the weekends, count me in.

From my personal experience, searching for any information about my grandfather, I have noticed that their index of names is very limited. My grandfather's name wasn't there yet when I searched the history of the units he served in
His name was mentioned a few times.

If by any chance you will get a chance to work there please bear this in mind so if you come across names please check if they are listed in the index. If not please add them to the list? with the reference of the files or if the names are already listed please check if the reference of that document is included.
It will help relatives of researchers to have a full information about these people.

I have only scratched a surface of my grandfather's whereabouts because it took me almost a day to locate his name.

It's an exciting project. I spent a full day with no food or water as I didn't want to loose any minute:))))

Best regards.
Izabela

The hope is that if we get enough people together a group could then spend several days cataloging (or whatever amount of time individuals can manage). This would of course be dependent on what PISM will allow. For those from out of town perhaps arrangements could be made with local members to put them up for a few days or more as London is pricy.

Kresy-Siberia is looking for some volunteers and here’s why. During an interesting and informative visit to the Polish Institute and Sikorski Museum (PISM) in May 2014 I was told their archive had many documents that were still un-catalogued. With this in mind I recently proposed to Kresy-Siberia’s executive board the idea of approaching PISM to have active Kresy-Siberia members voluntarily help catalogue these unidentified documents. For the moment I am posting this only to get an idea of numbers who would be interested in participating in such an effort. I will add that this is open to everyone and not exclusive to UK members. Once these documents are catalogued the museum would have a better sense of what they have which will provide future academics, historians and the public with a rich source of research material. Now to be clear this is ‘only cataloguing’ which is a careful and respectful inspection and identification of rare irreplaceable documents, not a translation of their contents. I have no idea as to how much is un-catalogued or how long such a project would take, it would likely be a progressive task. Was asked if I would coordinate the project and gladly accepted. Once I have a better sense of numbers I will confer with the executive board after which PISM will be approached with an offer, if they accept plans can then be formulated. That being said please post or message me if you are interested.

Thanks Terry appreciate your thoughts.

To be clear we have not approached PISM yet. As mentioned in my original post we want to first get an idea of how many people would be interested before any offer is made.

Living in Canada, even though I'd certainly be interested in helping, it isn't really an option. Still I'd like to offer a comment. The fact that the Institute is willing to let volunteers take up the task is huge. Cataloging and documenting as of yet unknown material?
I know an individual who approached the Hoover Institute several years ago with a solid plan about organizing and digitizing material from the Anders' collection, starting with the testimonies and pictures. The constraints they placed to do that made the project undoable and so there everything sits just as it was.
I hope the PISM project is a success.

Hi, thank you for posting this interesting story, it's good to know they actually remember us
and I know they are trying to be nice to us but I found Pan Duda's speech a bit bombastic
but then I grew up totally surrounded by the survivors of Monte Cassino
who tended to have a more subdued and sad recollection of the event
plus all the friends and colleagues they left behind in the cemeteries
and naturally I tend to share their attitude for that reason
so this speech would seem a bit bombastic for us who grew up so close to this event.

Actually you don't really need to "imagine" the scenes described in Pan Duda's speech,
just look at the pictures in the "family album" of the Polish Second Corps, "Trail of Hope",
for graphic illustrations but then again I, like other "children of this regiment",
have the benefit of all the remembered narrations of our fathers (and for some, their mothers)?
about these pictures:- I just wish this book had been published 50 years ago!

It's also good to know that Pani Anders was also there,
how nice of her, a general's daughter, to occasionally remember the front-line troops, the children of whom we are!

Perhaps also, in the midst of using this event to do a bit of political posturing in Poland's dealings with the EU leadership Pan Duda, Pani Anders, and of course Pan Kaczynski and Pani Szyd?o et al might also remember that the Polish soldiers of Monte Cassino are survived by a lot of adult children who really would like some help to trace our missing kinfolk left behind in the USSR in 1942 and elsewhere and to re-establish our Polish citizenship without having to spend a "bundle" doing it, and it would also be so helpful if they could educate the mainland Polish public about us and discourage visiting Polish bumpkins from denying that we are actually Polish but only merely foreigners of distant Polish ancestry, which can be so very obnoxious to someone who has so many soldiers of the Second Republic in her ancestry.

Cheers on this balmy and lazy Sunday afternoon in Toronto, Canada!
