Hi Kent

Thanks so much for this. I believe that in our group are some veterans or
families of the USS Hermitage mercy voyage..

Do you think that your friend from the USS Hermitage could put us in touch
with Mr Kielbasa, or send us a scan of the program and other photos/info he
may have (assuming he has it back?)

After finding the "Forgotten Odyssey" information, I forwarded the URLs to
some old sailors. Here is response from one.

Thanks for the wonderful memories. It seems like the voyage was yesterday. I
was on the Hermitage from the takeover days in Panama until the end of the
war. I saved as a memento the program the Polish children performed for the
crew in thanks for their rescue and the written speech of the Polish Consul
recognizing the occasion. I often wondered about the final outcome of the
rescue and this info gives me some of that information. Thanks again very
much!

I remember the name of your father -"Pappy" although with time memories do
fade. I also have had contact with Mr. B. Kielbasa. He was interested in the
material > I mentioned and asked if I would sent the "Childrens Program" to
him so that he could produce Christmas cards from it. In return he sent me
various pictures and info that he had collected. I understand he was writing a
book--a very nice gentleman.

The refugees were not our only passengers--we brought a group of Indian Laskar
seaman to the US to pick up a ship. Also on another trip Chinese Air Cadets on
their way for US training. This was in addition to prisoneers of war, German
and Italian during our Atlantic voyages and lastly a shipload of war brides at
the end of the war. What fun. Oh yes, Red Cross Ladies joined us on the beach
at Boro Boro and the Captian had his pick for a playmate on an Australian
voyage. See what fun we had and "Pappy" told you it was all work!

Anatol, thank you for the website about your progress in England after the war. ?Was your wife Krysia also a Polish refugee? ?I wonder if your children would be also interested in their family history?

My name is Anatol Kruk, born in Bialowieza 1929. Deported to Siberia in Feb.1940. Left the then Soviet Union in July 1942 together with the Polish Army - 5th Division stationed in Dzalal-Abad,Kirkizstan. Got to Massindi, Uganda (E.Africa) via Persia (Tehran) and India (Karachi) by the end of 1942.

I feel that there are still many alive who still do remember those years, would like to talk about it and share their experiences. And this is the main reason why I would like to join the Group.

As in a way exercise, I have written (designed) a Website about myself. Perhaps you would like to have a look at it. http://members.aol.com/RamzesIII/FotoGal1.htm ?It is relevant to the subject.

Hoping to hear from you soon,

My name is John Gierlach and I am located in Toronto, Canada.

My father's family came from the same area in pre-war Poland and was
deported to the same camp as Henry Sokolowki's father's family. It was
through searching the internet did I find this group and that particular
connection - it certainly highlights the benefits of the group.

My father joined the Anders Army and ended up eventually in Canada.

Hi Joasia

If you try the MOD (see details at ) you should get a proper reception these days - they will tell you if the records exist, and get you to fill out a next-of-kin report.

Apparently Eve is having trouble with her computer, but the Memorial Wall e-mail should be restored shortly.

Best of luck

--I read THE LONG WALK in 1947 or 1948 when it was first published,
as a serial, in an English weekly 'Bulldog', or some similar name. I
enjoyed it very much, but I found it hard to believe that the author
met the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, as described in the

?? Shalom Members,
???????? Do any of the members have photos, postcards, or other memorabilia citing the town of Losice, Poland ? May or may not emphasize Jewish influence within the town . I would love copies sent to me in order to place them?on the website: .
??????? My wife and I have translated Losice's Yizkor Book ( book of remembrances written by survivors after the war ) from Yiddish and Hebrew into English.
?????? Our major project is the reclamation of Jewish gravestones stolen by the Nazis from cemeteries in Losice, Mordy, and Sarnaki. Once in Losice they were then used as paving stones for a courtyard, a stone fence, and added protection in and around a bunker which still exists on the property. To date 1500 gravestones have been unearthed.
??????Thank you.

I have, three times over the years since I first saw
it in the Calgary Public Library in the 80's.

There are two discussion groups about the book. One
in yahoo groups, and one in allreaders.

One the more interesting posts was from a guy in India
who said his grandfather was one of the India army
doctors who treated Rawicz and his companions after
their entry into India. Unfortunately I couldn't find
his email address, and subsequent posts requesting it
were unanswered.

There is also an Indian lady living in India with an
interest in Polish matters who is trying to track
down the Indian connections to The Long Walk, but so
far she hasn't come up with much.

I do have her email address, and is someone wants to
correspond with her, I can supply it.

Leszek

I am researching my parent's history. They were both deported during the

and served with Gen Anders army. I was born in Italy in 1946.

I am so thrilled when I accessed the site and finally found out so much

so
this history would have been 'forgotten'.

I would love to join the Kresy- Siberia.....please do sign me up.

Many thanks
