[linuxham] [KM4ACK-Pi] Trouble installing VARA on RPi4
Adrian: Many thanks for the reply ! Linux noob here, but studying. I think I have vb6run (I think SP6) and mfc42 already installed, but I will check. I do NOT have cabextract. I¡¯ll also check the others. Now, with a 32 bit system, do I need wine64 or wine32 ? I need to document all this, because if I actually do get this right, there are a lot of guys that want to know about it. I¡¯ll keep notes. :) 73, Jamie WB4YDL

New install BT Mobilinkd TNC3
9
OK, next issue ¡ First off, I reviewed Jason¡¯s YT video on the TNC3 and the updated PAT Menu - about 2 years old - and the older (pre-PAT Menu) video using a TNC2 - about 5 years old. Going to PAT Menu -> start/stop modem -> Start Mobilinkd Modem BT. Get connection successful. Clicking Start Mobilinkd Modem BT again (as required) does NOT give a connect and HTTP. It restarts the first dialog - endless loop.. I tried to do the older method with copying the MAC address with hcitool scan and then running rfcomm connect an I got a permission denied for connect. I tried going wired to the TNC3 and it worked flawlessly. Any help appreciated. Going to stop here for the day - not tackling VARA until later ! 73, Jamie WB4YDL

73Linux problem with conky and pi-aprs
Hello! Installed 73Linux on fresh baked pi 4B running "bookworm." Some minor issues: Grid square not displayed on pat menu even though correctly entered in config file. This causes an error-msg /warning I want to download winlink locations. Says distance and azimuth cannot be calculated. The pat app does however start without any error-msges. pi-ARRS cannot start modem(s). I see in the terminal window that there is a problem with X11 window. ignore the error-msg about direwolf.config. I till must edit it: (yad:24359): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 19:34:36.053: gdk_x11_window_get_xid: assertion 'GDK_IS_X11_WINDOW (window)' failed Dire Wolf version 1.7 Includes optional support for: gpsd hamlib cm108-ptt dns-sd ERROR - Could not open config file /home/pi/direwolf.conf Try using -c command line option for alternate location. See online documentation: stable release: https://github.com/wb2osz/direwolf/tree/master/doc development version: https://github.com/wb2osz/direwolf/tree/dev/doc additional topics: https://github.com/wb2osz/direwolf-doc (yad:24397): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 19:34:44.368: gdk_x11_window_get_xid: assertion 'GDK_IS_X11_WINDOW (window)' failed Unable to connect to TCP KISS TNC at 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1), port 8001 (yad:24435): Gdk-CRITICAL **: 19:34:46.651: gdk_x11_window_get_xid: assertion 'GDK_IS_X11_WINDOW (window)' failed CONKY installs but gives me only a black screen that covers up the app bar at the top of screen. During the installation I noticed a similar error-msg concerning the GDK IS 11 window failing. Could these problems be related? WSJTX I noticed the installed version will expire on 15 JAN 2025. Can I update over the 73Linux app? Not a 73Linux issue, but: Every version of RPi OS has its annoying problems, it seems. For me it"s the VNC server. RPiOS "bookworm" uses WAYVNC server. Never heard of it. Most of my VNC clients haven't heard of it either, because they cannot connect to the VNC server on my RPi4b. Anyone else have this issue? I can't get any of the screenshot apps to work either. Could this be related to the X11 problem? I stll have to connect my Pi to my radio in order to complete my evaluation. More later. Addendum: Pi-Apps does not install VARA FM. I used an old YT video from KM4AC about installing VARA on Linux and successfully installed both VARA HF and VARA FM on my Lenovo Laptop running Ubuntu Linux. I hope his instructions are still up to date. I will try installing VARA FM on my RPi using these instructions.Wish me luck!

Because: There was an error creating the child process for this terminal Failed to execute child process "/usr/loca/bin/ardopc64": Failed to execute: No such file or directory I looked in /usr/local/bin/ and indeed, ardopc64 does not exist there. WSJT-X Frequency readout jumps

When working FT8, the frequency readout in WSJT-X will jump all over the place while transmitting. The radio is unaffected and remains on frequency and FLDigi is usually unaffected. However on occasion it will close abruptly. Radio - Icom IC-706MKIIG, Antenna 80M EFHW, Computer PI-4. Any ideas? Paul AC7UT

Cannot get past enter sudo password when trying to instal 73 linux

#73linux
I have a lenovo laptop running Mint. Decided to load 73Linux. Twice I have gotten to dialogue box prompt where it asks me to enter my sudo password. I do not know what it is looking for but it will not accept my password. What am I doing wrong? Only password I have ever set on the cptr is the sign in which I believe is also used as the sudo pswd. Thankfully I had made a snapshot in timeshift, so easy to reset to square one. Thanks for any help

rigctld segmentation fault - PI 4 Bookworm
2
I am trying to put together an APRS node on a new PI4 with 4GB with good heat management and power supply. I'm using FLRIG, rigctld, Direwolf, and YAAC. I'm running into a very frustrating problem. I flashed a new Raspberry PI Bookworm 64 system yesterday. I went through the installation of FLRIG, Hamlib (built from source from Github), Direwolf (built from source from Github), and YAAC. Got it all working as expected. Worked beautifully overnight and this morning. I shut it down to make some shack changes. When I restarted the system, at "rigctld -m 4" I got a segmentation fault. I spent a couple of hours trying everything I could think of to resolve the issue, but it persisted. No luck at all. I finally decided start from scratch. I got a new microSD card (SanDisk Extreme 32GB) and flashed it with the Raspberry Pi 64 bit OS, Bookworm, using the Raspberry Pi flasher. Then I did a completely new install of all of the software pieces - FLRIG, Hamlib, Direwolf, and YAAC. It came up and ran fine for about 3 restarts. Then - SEGMENTATION FAULT again when I ran rigctld. Now that whole installation can no longer be used. Then I put that card in another PI4 (a little older one). Same issue. No joy. Any hints as to how to proceed on this one? Pascal AC7N

Can't take a screenshot - scrot
10
Hi all. This is probably my first time posting on this forum. I hope someone here my offer some help on this one. I have just set up Bookworm on 2 PI 4s to use for ham radio digital modes, including APRS. However, in the process, I discovered that I can't seem to get a screenshot. I have tried "scrot", of course. It puts a png file in my home directory, but when I open it with any image display program, it is just a black screen. I have tried this numerous times on both computers with the same results. I tried displaying the png file with several different programs, but nothing but black. Then I installed "gnome-screenshot". It runs, but throws an error saying that it couldn't take a screenshot, even though it tried all different ways (paraphrased). Anyone have any idea what's going on, or a recommendation to take screenshots? Pascal AC7N

Can the new Evolve III be upgraded?
9
Does anybody have any experience running the new Evolve III laptop with the USB-C jack? Can you upgrade the SDD in this model or only on the older model with the Cellular modem? Old ones are hard to find and the new ones on Amazon all have the USB-C port where the cellular modem(SIM Card) was located? I have two of the older ones that have a 128GB drive installed where the factory 64 GB drive was located. I want to pickup another Evolve but would like some feedback first Thanks Dave

Autostart JS8Call attached to QDX/QRP radio
5
I've been trying to autostart (CRONTAB) JS8Call on a Pi4B running either Bookworm or Bullseye attached to a QDX/QRP radio. I can start JS8Call fine from the command line or via the menu but if I attempt to start it from Crontab it no longer sees the audio devices. crontab entry is: #start js8call @reboot sleep 40 && export DISPLAY=:0 && /usr/bin/js8call >> /home/pi/js8_start.log 2>&1 (js8_start.log to aid in troubleshooting) Starting js8call (or wsjtx for that matter) from command line or menu shows alsa_input.usb-QRP_Labs_QDX_Transceiver-02.analog-stereo for input and the corresponding alsa/QRP Labs output for output. Running via CRONTAB statement above will launch JS8Call (or wsjtx) but Audio input and output listings are empty and neither of the alsa xxxx QRP_Labs devices exist. Any thoughts? Thanks Jerry

Does current (Nov 2024) 73Linux successfully install Vara on Pi4/64 bit bookworm?
2
What is the state of installation scripts for VarAC on Pi 4 with 73Linux? I believe Wayland was a problem earlier, but now that Raspberry has changed the graphics manager is that still a problem? Do I need to use 32-bit applications, or can I use 64-bit? Ideally, I'm hoping to just run 73Linux update and have everything needed (Wine, etc.) installed, but not sure if that is the current state. P.S. I tried using 73Linux on a new Bookworm OS install, and saw the note about sometimes Vara doesn't install on first try. I ran 73Linux again with only Vara selected, but it still doesn't appear on Ham apps menu. Is this a known issue? -- --- Steve Johnson K0OIL

ARDOP modem not stopping
2
When stopping the ARDOP modem from PATMENU it doesn't shutdown. This is happening on a Wo-We and an Evolve running Mint 22 and a recent 73 Linux build. Trying to start a packet modem in this condition results in a Direwolf message (run in command window) of "Could not open audio device plughw: 3,0 for input: Device or resource busy This means some other application is using that device, The solution is to identify that other application nd stop it. Pointless to continue without audio device This is using an Evolve laptop or Wo-We. How can I identify what has plughw: 3,0 open? To get out of this condition takes an extended power down on the computer and powering off the IC-705 for a similar time. Thanks Dave

VARA and 64 bit systems
I've run across this quirk and curious if anyone else has... I use Tri-mode but this also happens with LinBPQ. VARA doesn't accept incoming connections when using a 64 bit system. Below is a screen shot of the VARA virtual TNC on a 32 bit system. You'll notice at the top of the TNC, and highlighted in red, my callsign. When using a 64 bit system, my call doesn't show. Both systems use LABWC / Wayland. Incoming connections work fine with LinBPQ or Tri-mode with 32 bit. Connections are ignored with 64 bit. thanks... Richard ko0ooo
