857 with Direwolf for 2M Packet

Has anyone had luck with 2M packet using the 857 and SignaLink? ?If so, can you please reach out to me so I can check my settings against yours? ?I can get ARDOP to work just fine for HF win link, but 2M packet work using Direwolf is only keying SignaLink, not the radio.

Thanks so much to Mr. Ossi for helping me troubleshoot and get this far. ?I started having all sorts of issues while troubleshooting, to include the Pi not recognizing the SignaLink anymore. ?I burned a new image on a new SD card, installed RC5 last night, and I'm back to basics.

I am able to get FLRig to PTT even in packet mode.
Direwolf starts up, RIGCTL turns green, KISSATCH turns green, and Pat opens up.
When I try to initiate an AX.25 communication, SignaLink PTT will turn red, but does not key the radio.

I'm scratching my head on this one... why would FLRIG PTT key SignaLink and transmitter, but Pat/AX25/Direwolf only key the SignaLink and not the transmitter? ?I am so frustrated because I know the answer has to be something simple that I'm missing. ?I don't think it's a radio configuration issue because I've seen the radio transmit using FLRig. ?And Pat opens up and gives the radio frequency for my-rig, and the AX.25 can key SignaLink... there's just something going on with PTT maybe? ?(Do I have that right? ?SignaLink provides the audio/tones but something else controls the PTT?)

I've been up most of the night trying to figure this out. ?I'd really love to have the packet capability not only because it's a challenge, but also because my ARES group is trying to get everyone onboard with it.

Any suggestions?

Grant,

You have me stumped on this one. If the signalink is going into transmit, it only makes sense that the radio should go into transmit as well. Maybe try posting the question to the general Pi forum
or to the Direwolf forum. I have tried several times and cannot reproduce your issue here with a signalink & 857D. Once you run it down, I am really curious to know the culprit.

I see a FT 857. I had all sorts of problems when I was trying to get a signalink to work with FT 920 at a radio store I helped at.?

Is the pinout (MIC/PPT/GND)? for the signalink wire properly inside?

Is the Rj45 to radio been checked to see if there is continuity?

Is the audio for Playback up?? Is it up to key the PPT VOX in the Signalink?

I'm a window guy, I help locally with soundcard stuff. Raspberry PI, I leave that to KM4ACK other Linux guru's

Okay, thanks Jason. ?I posted on both the Direwolf and the Pi forum. ?Can't wait to figure out what's up.
Very respectfully,
Grant

Don,
Good thoughts all around for troubleshooting. ?The SignaLink has the correct jumper module (I swapped between this and my other SignaLink that supports the 450D - they both use the same module - just to be sure). ?I've got good connectivity, and I'm able to get SignaLink-->PTT-->Radio xmit in both FLRIG, FLDIGI, and ARDOP. ?
Very respectfully,
Grant

Then ports. In UZ7HO there's a menu you setup for PPT: None, and various ports for Cat PTT. I know in the Winmor, Ardop, Vara there's a menu for radio and ptt settings. Deirwolf is another animal that I don't understand.
I know in the FT 920 I had to go the menu 46 or something like that to change the offset.??
I'm wondering?if a port is being blocked and not allowing the VOX/PTT to happen. If I don't set up?the PTT part of UZ7HO. I can recieve?but signalink keys (red) but radio does not TX. Something in one of the Linux program is not opening up the TX port.
Just reaching for straws.

I hope you find the issues.

Not an answer as to why your Signalink doesn¡¯t key the radio but the FT857 has data VOX built in that will get you up and running.

  • menu 40 Dig VOX 95

I ended up ditching the SignaLink and went to the Sabrent sound card - much better and easier. ?I'm getting tones out, and was connected for almost 90 seconds to a local EOC, but didn't get emails to transmit. ?I've tried my three local gateways, and no joy on any of them. ?Do I need to have VOX turned on for Sabrent sound card?

Rather, do I need VOX turned on on the 857 with the Sabrent?

Yes, menu 40 you might need to mess about with levels as well. I use a Signalink but have just swapped to a Sound Card just to check my advice works. Connected to Winkink no issues with menu 40 set at around 30. You have have to adjust menu 34 Digial Gain.

Good luck 73 de Dave G7HJX?

Thanks Dave. ?I've got Digital Gain (Menu 37) at 75, and put Dig Vox (Menu 40) at 30. ?I tried to turn on "VOX" on the front menu, but it won't let me in packet mode.

I'm decoding some packets on 144.390; weird though, when I tried to transmit a message with PiAPRS I got "Can't use rig_set_ptt for channel 0 PTT because rig_open failed."

Sorry could have been clearer, the good thing about the Digital VOX on the FT857 is unusually it works in FM Mode, thus is what you use.

Thanks Dave.

When I try in FM mode, Vox or no Vox, the radio keys but no tones are transmitted. ?And Vox is not selectable in Packet mode.

Weird thing I just saw. ?I'm running a PiGate for APRS separately. ?One of the stations I'm trying to connect with is relatively close to 144.390 (I'm trying to connect to WD4SEN, 17 miles away, on 144.930). ?My PiGate picks up the transmission. ?Here is the image of it. ?Does this help with troubleshooting?

So the the output of the 857 to the mic input adapter do you do the ptt line via /dev/ttyusb0?? That's sounds interesting

Hi Grant, is that correct, are you using the Mic input? If so it¡¯s going to be using the Mic VOX menu 88 if memory serves me. This is not the best way to operate any data mode as the Mic input circuitry shapes the audio input. It is much better to use the rear DIN input/output. I can only think you have the VOX set so high it triggers even though the TX audio is very low, however it must be seeing some audio as your other receiver is hearing it. What happens when you adjust Menu 51 FM Mic gain?

All said I really would recommend going the route of using the rear 6pin DIN input so that all the digital settings apply and all audio filtering is bypassed. You will have much better results and it¡¯s very cheap and easy to do by getting a suitable DIN to DIN lead and chopping it in half. A few pounds/dollars. Also simples way of doing PTT in my opinion without using VOX is to use the GPIO pins and a simple circuit.

It¡¯s how mine operates on the FT8900 which doesn¡¯t have any sort of VOX at all.

Not sure if it matters, but I also installed this:

Yaesu TCXO-9?

I don't think it's a range/elevation thing either.

All looks fine to me other than menu 37 DIG GAIN, unless your sound card has a very low output or you have volume OUT set very low in software you shouldn¡¯t need to use 100. This may be your issue, you may be massively over deviating. I never use more than 30-50.

Dave

Dave,

Okay, thanks. ?I brought it down to 50. ?Still no joy - but I'm receiving on my HT and the PiGate.

I may just have to drive over the local repeater and walk my way back to the QTH to see if it's a range issue. ?But I didn't think 20 miles would be an issue. ?My antenna is in the second floor of my house, in the attic, and has no problem hitting a repeater 40 miles away.

Very respectfully,

Grant
