Re: VARA in Dec2023 on a Pi

Just wanted to post here that I've been working with botspot?& gman to merge VARA HF into pi-apps officially.
This installation should be more automatic now just by installing pi-apps and choosing VARA HF from the "Engineering" apps menu.
To update VARA HF, just uninstall and reinstall from pi-apps.

[Edited Message Follows]

Just installed Wine and VARA HF following Kelly's procedures in /g/KM4ACK-Pi/message/12128. I installed it on a fresh Pi4B running 32-bit Bookworm.

Everything appeared to go well. Haven't put it on a radio yet but don't anticipate any trouble. I've been running VARA HF on Window for a year now. I bound Winlink Express on Windows to the instance of VARA HF on the Pi and it would try to transmitt which is a good sign.

I'm far from an expert on Linux but I did find a couple of rough spots that would give a newbie some trouble. I assumed the instruction to download all was intended to download the zip files which must be unzipped. In addition, those files have spaces in the file names which gives Linux fits. I started typing and then used a Tab character to autocomplete the file name with the slashes to handle the spaces.

That's my two cents.

Thanks, Kelly. It worked great.

I'll work on fixing my Winelink script too, though I don't have a solid ETA on that.

Re: Toughbook FZ-M1

I can't see why not. My CF 19 works but has issues with FLrig and Pat Winlink, JS8call & FT 8 talking. GPS if you have the driver is not picked up. I use a USB GPS from Amazon, or the GPS in the IC 705. I made my dual boot.?

FLrig changes frequencies, it will not TX for your info. My Win 10 side doesn't key (TX) the radio using JS8call or FT 8 using Flrig. However, if I use VaraAC Flrig will TX. I don't understand why it works for FLDIGI and VaraAC, but not for the other programs in Linux or Windows.

Besides you can use a Bluetooth Keyboard if you get tired of using the plastic pen.

It should run fine on top of what you already have but I suggest backing up the system before hand just to be safe.

Using 73Linux On an Existing RPi OS Install

Greetings all,
?
I have a Rpi 4B with 4GB ram running the 32bit version of Legacy Bullseye downloaded from the Raspberry Foundation website and freshly installed about 6 months ago. ?I've installed and have been using a few ham radio applications from Bullseye's app repository (namely JS8Call and WSJT-X). ?I also downloaded and compiled flrig and fldigi from source.
?
Couple of questions:
?
1. Is it okay to use 73Linux on my existing system to install and re-install other ham radio applications offered through 73Linux, or do I need to start with a fresh copy of the OS?
?
2. If I CAN safely use 73Linux on my existing system, should I first uninstall any existing applications that I want to re-install through 73Linux?
?
Thanks in advance,
?

True but in a basic install, Pat Menu uses rigctl piped to FLRIG for rig control so 4532 is correct in this instance.

Don, I had something weird happen today that's similar to your situation and another user has reported something similar as well. I upgraded to Pat 0.16 on a known good system and lost rig control. Thinking it was a Pat issue, I downgraded back to 0.15.1. Still not working. Turns out that FLRIG had lost comms with the radio. Reset everything and I was back in business. Can you confirm that FLRIG still has control over the radio?

direwolf audio broken pipe

I am curious if anyone else noticed this problem.
I run a BPQ packet BBS on a pi 5. I use direwolf as the TNC. About once or twice a day direwolf would bomb with audio broken pipe and would mention it might be caused by the cpu being too slow. It was hard to catch it doing this and the logs didn't give me much help. However this morning i was at the terminal when this happened and top showed wayfire at more than 50% CPU so i think wayland is the culprit. I set raspi-config to boot into console only mode and am running direwolf and BPQ using screen. I will watch a few days to see if this fixed the problem but just curious if anyone else has seen this. Google wasn't much help with the issue.

Re: Minimum packages (73linux) to run PAT-Winlink

Assuming x86 platform, the following will give you packet, VARA FM, and VARA HF
Pat
Pat Menu
Direwolf
AX25
VARA
VARA HF

If you want to use position reports and/or gps forms, also install:
GPS
GPS Update Tool

Also, you didn't mention rig control but if you need it, install FLRIG and hamlib (rigctl)
