Re: K-EDIT for Atari St "now working"
Hi José,?
There's a debugged copy in the files section of the Facebook group. The reason for your copy 'not working' is in the (ahem) 'improved copy protection' that was part of the original disk - in other words you had to have it in the disk drive so it could be read by the program for verification. It's a pain in the bum particularly now that the4 original company Softworld no longer exists. Luckily some years ago a guy on the Atari Forum very kindly sorted that out, and renamed it 'Debug' That now works if you copy it across to a hard drive without needing the key copy disk - You will still need it for the prog lists that came with the programe. Here's the link to the program:? Let me know if you have any problems, do shout! :-) Best wishes,? David. |

Re: K1000 EX Ensemble Expander upgrade
Hello, I am back after a while.
Today I finished the K1000EX restoration. There go some details that may be useful for another users: - The cold solder joints/broken joints on the power suppy were present; so it was needed to resolder de connectors that suppy power from the PSU to the motherboard, as is documented for other models. - The upgrade to Pro1 with the set of eproms available on k1000.net was unsuccessful; with the new OS eprom the unit didn?t boot up, so I went back to the original OS eproms, and it turned on again. - In the process of removing old sound chips, they were corrupted so not all sounds were sounding good; this was solved replacing the original sound eproms present on the 1000EX with their equivalents on the PRO1 set; so I can confirm that U50, U51, U54, U55, U58 and U59 waverom chips works perfectly as replacements on the 1000EX models Thanyou very much for support! Re: piano legit
开云体育I don’t know why I feel such aversion to softsynths, but I do.? Perhaps the Luddite in me is crying out. They have some crazy good stuff out there, but the idea of playing a laptop or even a keyboard with a big screen just cries foul to me. Weird, huh? I must not be the only one, because to that end they even have VST players in 2U cases – but sorry, they’re still over-the-line. Yes, I know every digital synth is a computer and yes, I know I’m being unrealistically superstitious, but a specialty module is about all the computer I can countenance on stage. Have plenty of screens in my little studio, but that’s the only place. ? L. ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Heather Boyle via groups.io

I can only say that with multi-sampled, multi-attack multi-decays, half pedaling, closed-half and full stick etc, the experience and realism these instruments bring is breathtaking. You can have a Bosendorfer, a Steinway D, a real bar room honky tonk upright or tack piano, each with its own very distinct character and tonal spectrum. There hasn't been a time when a musician could actually make these choices, in their own studios. All for far less than the original K1000s cost. ? The K1000s are still very useful, the strings in particular. A joy to play and listen to. I have 9 of them today, bought my first ones in about 1992. ? FWIW, YMMV Heather |

piano legit
开云体育For years, my K1000 PX has been my go-to piano.? I mean for years like since 1988 when I bought it new for something like $1900 from Chuck Levin Music when I was on the east coast.? Piano; Piano and strings; piano and bass; etc.? It’s been that good and still is. Anyway... I’ve been looking at the idea that it might be time for another piano.? Sort of a standalone piano-plus module and take the K1000 (and my other several KW modules) back into heavy duty synth programming exploiting that 4 layer architecture.? Looking at the Dexibell module. Here’s one: ? Anyone around here with experience on this thing that also has experience on our beloved K1000 modules? I’m just a little shaky on making the switch. ? Re: Editor and Librarian
I know very well what you say about keyspan cards, they are rare an expensive. I have mine on my G4 MDD and it does the work perfectly with OMS, freemidi, etc etc. The main advantage over built-in serial on powerbooks is that you get two ports, so you can make a massive midi setup.
Anyway, as you use Studio5, you can stack up to three Studio5 on a single serial port, what means 45 separate MIDI lines, and make use of the awesome MIDI routing capabilities (studio patches). What’s the last, best Mac laptop with a serial port? -> powerbook g3 PDQ 300 Mhz; there are different clock speed processors options, but that is not essential as you have noted. Later models (those with Firewire/USB connectivity) does not have the serial port connector.? What’s the biggest screen in Mac laptop with a serial port? -> 14.1" . You can check specs on link above. What’s the last best tower with a serial port? -> Macintosh G3 desktop.? The advantage on this model is that internal hard drive is IDE, instead of SCSI. About SSD, some models work, others not. The HD on powerbooks are standard IDE 40pin 2.5", small form factor usual on laptops, so it?s not so hard to find mechanical replacements.? :) |
Re: Editor and Librarian
开云体育A Powerbook wasn’t really on my radar, but now it seems to have some appeal. And for midi librarian work, it needn’t be the latest.? It needn’t even be all that fast. It would have to fit in a rack drawer.? Were it 1U it would be super cool. Right now, I’m using a G4 graphite with keyspan card.? But those things go for hundreds of dollars – I need two more. I’m also using a SSD startup drive, but I don’t know if the kit is backwards compatible to a laptop – or a G3 – gonna hafta check that out. The SSD makes startup very sweet and convinced me to still allow the Mac in serious contention for the job. So, a plethora of questions presents: What’s the last, best Mac laptop with a serial port?? What’s the biggest screen in Mac laptop with a serial port? What’s the last best tower with a serial port? Like I said, it’s not about power (I’ve been using a 7300 for some stuff) but about reliability or even serviceability in the long term. ? L. ? Re: Serial mac MIDI
开云体育Hi,I completely agree that the MIDI transmission on serial port is superior to that on usb. Many years ago I had tested all serial and usb midi interfaces on the market, measuring jitter, and invariably the best results were on midi serial port interfaces. Old macs are a great value when you think to MIDI trasmission best Luca Il 28/07/21 21:45, José Juan ha

开云体育Obstacles: 1.?????? Vintage Macs are spendy right now.? $200 for a 7100 even. 2.?????? A G3 Wallstreet sounds like just the ticket, except I have to enclose that into a 2U box. 3.?????? Graphics are and forever lame.? Meh, I can live with it, I suppose. Advantages: 1.?????? Built in serial is the bomb!? No cards.? No problems. 2.?????? Tried and true SW. I’m kinda still leaning at the vintage Mac idea, but I dunno.? Seems very dead-end from here. ? L. ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of José Juan

Re: Editor and Librarian
You can get MidiQuest for Mac, it will cover the K2000 and M1R, but not the K1000. Many years ago I tried to talk SoundQuest into covering the K1000, but not enough market for them to do it. This is why I wrote ObjectEditorX. However when Apple released Big Sur they changed Core Midi, so now It is only good for older MacOS variants.

Re: Editor and Librarian
Hi,
I am still using opcode oms with opcode interfaces and they work perfect for editing hardware of that era. Not only you can get them for peanuts, you get a rock solid midi system. There are expensive midi multiport interfaces for Windoze, but midi timing on them are a joke compared to old macs midi behaviour.? You can use a powerbook g3 wallstreet with built-in serial port and you will have a great 9.2.2 mac native computer with a lot less fan noises. Studio5 are 15 ports interfaces, not 16 :) |
Re: Editor and Librarian
On the Windows side, Midi Quest might do the trick for everything, but I haven't explored it in a while because it's not blind accessible. But I'd be curious if anyone has dealt with it or is willing to play with it. Steinberg left the room on this because they discontinued Sound Diver.

From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of LarryS Sent: Wednesday, July 28, 2021 2:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [K1000-K1200] Editor and Librarian Just been out of the loop too long and can’t answer my own question. I’m building a Kurzweil Rack with some of my modules. This particular rack, a slant face, will be Two K2000RS and Three K1000 (pro2 x2 and one pro3). Probably a Korg M1r. Plus room for a couple of other things. I want it to be self-contained and self supporting, as it were, so I’m reserving 2U for a computer and another 2U for an interface. A single midi controller will rule them all :-) Here’s my dilemma. What software? What hardware? What I have right now is 20+ year old Opcode Galaxy software. Very capable, I suppose, but it runs on an aging G4 Mac. It has full editing for both K1000 and K2000 with vintage graphics. I’d rework a G4 to be2U rackmount. The interface would be an Opcode Studio 5lx. 16x16 midi i/o. Again, very capable despite its age. It would handle many patches and be able to transfer them through the convoluted KW system to get them working. BUT, is there a PC based solution? Or a Linux based solution? Geez, even a Raspberry Pi or Android solution?? It has to work without moving cables, too. Enough I/O for every port to have its own. Of course, our own Dennis Spanogle has Kurlewin – a Windows based solution for the k1000. But what about K2000? Come to find out, I don’t even have a PC based midi interface. Need some opinions. No answer is wrong. Stay the course with vintage gear all around? Go get the newest whiz-bang? Or is there a secret and special combination I’ve not seen? (very likely, this one) What? L. ._,_ |
