Build time
8
It is impossible to predict the time needed to self build a boat. Quite simply because Einstein's law of relativity applies to it. First, there is the time for reflection before starting, which can go on forever. Then there is the time for fine-tuning, planing to the millimeter, sanding, errors, omissions, adaptations... But above all, there is a phenomenon that no one talks about, it is the disappearance of tools and the time spent looking for them. We put them in one place but they move on their own, because when we turn around, they are no longer there! It is then necessary to seek everywhere where the pencil, the eraser, the set square are hidden, all of which sneer while waiting to be found. Well, that's how it is with me ; elsewhere in the world, I don't know.

Eco 7.5 build

Hey forum, I have a couple of questions for you. When a plan describes an aluminum tube as 100/90 or 90/80 does that mean the thickness of the tube wall is 10mm? Second question is how do you attach the inner part of the trampoline? Would you attach a stringer with holes in it to tie the trampoline to the inner hulls and cabin? Thanks! Geoff

Hello Bernd and all the forum First of all, happy Easter everyone. I had a slowdown in the works due to an accident on my left hand but luckily everything is ok. Resumed work on the KD 122 Italy, finished the tedious job of sanding the entire boat, given two coats of epoxy primer and now she's ready to be painted. The mast will always be A-Frame but no longer in composite (due to too high costs in this period) but in aluminum tubes. The mainsails and jib were all original. The wheelhouse will be tiller with seat. The engines will be 48volts electric with 48volts off grid inverter with a small photovoltaic system just to operate the off grid inverter. Not long now Bye

ECO 6 Build - rudder blade failure
13
Recently I made my first attempt to build the rudder blades for my ECO 6, and met with a big failure. Advice, comments, suggestions are invited before I make my second attempt. The photos show what happened. The Meranti is very stiff, almost brittle. It appears to me I put too much epoxy mix in the V. The building plan diagram for the ECO 6 specifies filling to a line drawn at 13mm from the leading edge. The directions call for the line to be drawn at 15mm. I was aiming for the 13mm line but I expect I added too much - it was difficult to tell. It was also difficult to keep two pieces of plywood so that they meet only on the corners - i expect the join looked more like the one in the left of my rough drawing. I am not sure how significant that might be. If that is critical, perhaps someone might suggest how to achieve that. In one photo of the end of the blade, the epoxy appears to have failed. In my impatience, I tried bending things the morning after the pour and the epoxy was set but had not fully cured. I heard a loud crack and stopped bending and left it for 48 yours before trying again. I used a combination of ratchet straps and then clamps to close the V. Even with the trailing edges completely closed, there was still a large gap between one side of the blade and th 20X20mm spacer.. I left it over night like that to see if it would close any but it would not. To see what would happen I applied another clamp and of course, the plywood failed. On my next attempt I will make the line much darker, and I will use a refillable calking cartridge (which I have and didn't think to use) to place the epoxy mix more carefully. A friend suggested that the V needs be closed some but I am not convinced that is the best solution. I look forward to hearing other's experience.

Masts for biplane rig(s) made from pultrusion profiles
3
Hi! I have seen other posts mentioning masts made of flag poles. Longest I could find locally was 6m. Then pultrusion profiles crossed my mind. Something from eg. https://www.fibraworld.ba/grp-profiles/ They make them up to 12m in lenght (because of transport). Wrap some glass and carbon fiber in the right places and good to go? :) What do you think? Do masts have to be conical like WS masts?

DUO 800 vs DUO 800S
9
Hi all! My first post here. I am looking for some trailerable (at least easily transportable) and demountable platform for small family sailing and holidays in Croatia. Both of these seem a good fit for my purpose. I would prefer bi-plane rig (easier and faster setup, Berndt says it sails better too :) ) However, non-S version is significantly lighter and theoretically could fit on a light trailer (EU, up to 750 kg total mass) which would not require me to upgrade my license and car. :) Are there any other key differences? S has significantly higher payload but that is not too important for me. Any comments appreciated. Kind regards!

DUO 480
4
Hello everyone, New to this site, I'm starting to build a Duo 480. I live in the south of France. I am retired but still with a lot of activities and therefore little time to devote to building the boat. But the pleasure is as much in the journey as in the arrival, isn't it ? I have already built a small rowing sail and have a slightly larger boat that I sail on a large lake near Bordeaux. Alas, one is too small to really sail and the other is too big and too heavy to be easily moved. After much thought, I arrived at a catamaran project with a single sail and more classic hulls. I however stumbled on the design of the hulls. I was going to do them approximately but, luckily, I came across the Duo's photos, Brian's blog and Mika?l's video. I really liked it and decided to give it a go. I ordered the plans in the United States. I thought Bernd lived God knows where, but sa "maison" is at Maison ;-). I'll go see him one of these days. I started tracing and first cuts. I checked the correct dimensions by making pre-assemblies before gluing and I can say that the plans are very precise. I made my cuts to the millimeter and it falls perfectly just. Well done Bernd! I am now waiting for the weather to be a little warmer to do the collages of the large parts and move on to the construction stage of the two hulls. See you soon for the rest of the construction...

Progress
2
Hi Ron posted last week a series of photos of his progress in building his ECO 6. By the way, he is doing a great job. The images are very educative too. By the way, this is one of the functions of this group, showing other members what and how to build their boats. To encourage and educate. Building a boat is one side. Show us also the other side. Made an interesting trip with it, or had a good weekend with it. Show it! I presume other group members have also made progress or had a good holiday. Show it! Cheers Bernd

KD860 as a Liveaboard and ocean cruising.
20
Good day all, I am thinking of building the KD860 for live aboard (2 Adults and 2 kids) and ocean cruising. Is this a suitable boat for that purpose? I need advice from those of you that have built this boat with regards to performance and comfortability. I am thinking of raising the cockpit height by 0.5m. Is this alteration possible? Thanks

Difference between 10mtr Cats ?
7
Hi to the group. K-Design has 3 different models in the 10mtr. range, that i like : the Duo 1000, the KD 1000 and the KD105. I have also seen mentioned on internet, models: Duo 1000S and Duo 1001 but not on the official site (are those maybe slightly altered models ?) . The KD105, i loved from the moment i first saw it a year ago or so. It is a very beautiful design, with too little of information in my opinion. I asked earlier on this group if this model could be altered to gain a bit more space, and Bernd pointed out the Duo 1000 as an alternative. At first i was disappointed and did not pay much attention to it, because i was still under the impression, that a 40footer would be the smallest for my intention of use. After more research and some deliberating, i decided that a 30+ footer could do, if proper designed, and would make more sense to build and to handle. I will happily order the study plans of the duo1000 and Kd1000, but i hope they will give me a bit more information than the KD105 plans that i ordered earlier. I mean there is not much info, other than you can find on the net. I was interested in data as : Free board, Bridge deck clearance, height and beam of the hulls etcetera. Which is in my opinion important info in order to compare the different designs. Also i presume there are more pics (renderings) to find on the study plans of the Duo1000, where i could see the "open" bridge deck with it`s permanent bimini top ? (on the site i can only find a picture of the side, and a screenshot of the layout). So what i am looking for is the difference of the KD105, Kd1000 and duo1000. I can see and imagine that the KD105 is more performance oriented. The KD1000 is more cruising oriented with al it`s internal space, and the Duo1000, sort of in between. When comparing the data of the models, i find out that the biggest difference is the weight and loading capacity. For the KD105 : 1700kg empty - 3000kg displacement KD1000 : 2000kg empty- 4200Kg displacement Duo1000 : 1500kg empty- 3200kg displacement The dynamic stability of the Kd105 is 10,000kgm and the duo1000 18,000 ! and i guess the Kd1000 would be even more higher due to it`s weight. My guess is the different hull-shapes and maybe size of them will make those differences. But what i don`t understand is why the slightly lighter Duo1000 has a better load capacity and higher dynamic stability, than the KD105 even though it`s beam is slightly wider ? Another thing that confuses me is why the KD105 has a main sail of 37m2 whilst being the lightest displacement compared to the Duo has main of 34m2 and the more heavy displacement KD1000 only 30m2 ! ??? Another question i have is about the different rigs and sails. What are the differences, and are they dependable per model or are they exchangeable on the different models ? Aluminium mast and rigging, in good condition can be difficult to find here and import would be too expensive. Carbon flag posts could be imported, if in sections, for shipping. Also i would not mind to build a mast from scratch. Obviously the Kd105 could be fully build in sections, up the finish, and than transported and assembled at a shipyard or even waterside. But what about the KD1000 ? I have seen a video and pictures of a Duo1000 hull hanging on a crane, but it looks to me that it would take me far more time assembling and finishing after transporting the parts to a shipyard. Which would be in my case here very expensive. Little info about us and the intention of use : Not so young anymore couple with cats. Not so much sail experience, but good building skills. Living in Seychelles (island group indian ocean) We would love to explore the beauty of our islands (115 islands) spread over 1,350,000 square kilometers. Living on board for periods of time but not permanently. Mostly we would island-hop in between the inner islands 20 to about 100nm from the main island. Spending lots of time on anchor in beautiful bays. We would only sail when we like and when the season and weather is favorable for the planed trip, especially longer distances to t
