Hi Rob,
I play through a polytone amp with reverb. It has a selector switch for
tone in addition to the normal the 3 band eq. Most important .... its
LIGHT and SMALL for those of us that are getting older. The other plus is
that it also sounds good. Happy hunting.

Hi,

I recently purchased a used archtop (Heritage Super Eagle
with a single floating pickup), and was wondering what would
be the best bets for an amplifier. The guitar is very
resonant and is quite loud acoustically. I'm relatively new
to jazz, previously having been stuck in the blues.

Thanks,

Rob

Check out the FAQ on re.music.makers.guitar.jazz

I don't have the URL here, but an inquiry there will get you to it. It
has a good section on amps for jazz.

[jazzguitar] Sightreading

Hey Sam I never stuck to any one method or found any method to be better than others...just read anything you get your hands on...and don't spend too much time trying to perfect it...move on when you see your mistake. Try to play it all in one area or with minimal moves. Try to look ahead...most of all....keep at it. Take care Dave

[jazzguitar] Sight Reading!!!!

I need some help sight reading. I'd say I'm a good sight reader, which
to other musicians (non guitarists)= sucky reader. I'm very
expirienced in reading music and I just need to refine my reading to
the point where I can sight read anything at anywhere on the neck. I
would like to know some books you guys suggest and other methods. I've
been reading out of a book of jazz etudes called "Jazz Conception" by
Jim Snidero. Also, I read the tunes in Abersold books in the other
keys. The book I'm thinking about is Melodic Rhythms for Guitar by
William Leavitt. I've worked through his 3 vols of methods and I was
wondering if anyone knows whether or not this book is too limited or
below my playing ability from what I've told you. Thanks for any help
and suggestions!
-Sam

[jazzguitar] Re: Sight Reading!!!!

sam,
when working on your sight reading, be patient with yourself and run your
own race. it will come to you. the book you mentioned is decent.

[jazzguitar] Re: Signature models

Goosenberg, Eric

Pat Metheny plays the Ibanez Pat Metheny model as his basic electric guitar
live and in recordings, and has done so for the last couple of years. His
old ES-175 was beaten to shreds and has basically been retired, according to
his own comments. My recollection from reading about it is that he had a
significant part in the construction of both Ibanez Pat Metheny models.

Also, the one time that I saw Joe Pass live, I'm pretty sure that he played
the Epiphone. Larry Coryell had both an archtop and a flattop acoustic by
Cort when I saw him in a small club about a year ago, but I'm not sure how
closely they compare to Cort's model(s) that carry his name.

Hi there,

What's the point of signature models if the endorsing artists do not
play
them? I am not sure about the Pat Metheny though. Especially the lower end
PM did not impress me and again I doubt Pat would ever play one. And there
are countless other examples.

[jazzguitar] Signature models

Dick Onstenk

Hi there,

What's the point of signature models if the endorsing artists do not play
them? I am convinced the Coryell Cort and Epiphone Joe Pass are not up to
the standards of these fine artists. I don't like either model and I think
you can do a lot better investing in a used archtop.

Ibanez seems to be doing a bit better. Both George Benson and Joe Pass
actually use(d) their signature guitars. I am not sure about the Pat Metheny
though. Especially the lower end PM did not impress me and again I doubt Pat
would ever play one. And there are countless other examples.

Some time ago I even saw a Samick Charlie Christian which had nothing to do
with the original guitar Charlie played.

Well, I guess the whole signature model thing for low-end guitars is just a
marketing trick and is often used arbitrarily.

[jazzguitar] Re: epiphone sheraton vs. ??

i have the epiphone emperor regent and am quite satisfied with it. at the
time i bought it, i did some comprisons to new gibsons and came away more
impressed with epiphone. i've known a few folks back in florida with the
sheraton and both were satisfied and one used it as his primary guitar. the
pickup on the emperor could use some slight improvement but it was probably
copied from the 1940's - 50's early humbucker and is attatched to the neck
not the body. my advice, is always, don't worry about price or brand name but
what suits you. plug it in and try it. bring your amp to the store if you
need to.

[jazzguitar] epiphone sheraton vs. ??

hey guys,
i'm just thinking of buying a new epiphone sheraton.
do anyone here having experience with this guitar?
any other choices with better sound in the same price range?

How do these typo's get by me??? [Answer: Spell check brings up
"DePartment" when it sees "McPartland" and I hit the change key instead of
ignore key.]

Yes, Marion McPartland. But, now that you question me, I'm sure it was on
the Billy Taylor Jazz from the Kennedy Center show when he was a guest
there. Larry was using a Gibson Super 400 and Billy asked him about the
guitar he was using. Larry explained wwhy us used the 400. Thanks for the
question, Rick.

Now to spell check and re-read this note!

Lan -

What is the Marion DePartment Piano Jazz visit? Do you mean Marian
McPartland? I've never seen a Piano Jazz CD with Coryell on it.

Rick

Incidently, Larry is a friend and a great guitarist. Every
time I've seen
him perform, he's used a Super 400 or an L-5 Cess. List to
what he said
about guitars on his Marion DePartment Piano Jazz visit.

[jazzguitar] Re: Cort Larry Coryell Archtop

Lan Mosher

My humble opinion of the Cort Larry Copryell guitar

I have played two of them in stores and I would not have paid $400 for
either. they sounded tinny, and left a lot to be desired in neck shape,
fret dressing, finish etc. Junk!!

In that price range, I think the Epiphone's are better, the Washburns, and
the Ibanez's are better instrument.

Having nothing nice to say, I considered saying nothing. But when someone
who is thinking of getting into a full bodied archtop asks for advice or
opinions, I thinks those of us who have played or owned lots from Epi Joe
Pass models to D'Angelicos, D'Aquistos, Triggs, Andersons, Gibsons,
Heritages, etc. should speak up for what ever it is worth.

Incidently, Larry is a friend and a great guitarist. Every time I've seen
him perform, he's used a Super 400 or an L-5 Cess. List to what he said

it's a cool guitar
the pickups are korean (like Cort) so change them by US Duncan (the jazz)

Does anyone own or have any experience of the Cort Larry Coryell
archtop guitar model LCS-1?

The guitar seems to have a good spec (Seymour Duncan designed pickups,
spruce top etc.) and it sounds good on Coryell's CD Monk, Trane, Miles
and Me. It does not seem to be availible in the UK but I have seen it
advertised for $699 in the US which is about half list price.

Any comments about sound, playability, quality of construction etc
would be useful.

[jazzguitar] Jazz Guitar Chat Room

Brent Stuntzner

Hi everyone!

Thanks to a query from Don Jansen, there is now a Jazz Guitar Chat
available at www.stuntzner.brent.org. I've only notified my e-mail
community "families" in order to prevent unwelcome visitors, so have at it!

For the perpetually curious, there have been other additions and/or changes
at my site including close to 30 photographs in the Photo Album(Antarctica,
woodworking, BDS Construction), a Guestbook, Suggested Reading and
Listening, and Quotations borrowed from positive-feedback e-mail. I'm
still working on Wes' "Moanin" solo, though, so nothing new there. :-(

Just got a Kenny album in the mail which has a great version of "A Night in
Tunisia"....I can't wait!
