Fundraiser for Swing 46 Jazz and Supper Club, NYC (Was: Jazz Standard in New York City Closes Doors for Good)
"Swing 46 is facing extreme hardships to function. The challenges and circumstances of the global pandemic threaten the viability of the club and keeping its staff employed. ?The rent and other bills need to be paid immediately and our hopes of keeping the venue open are dwindling. If funding does not become available to help this beloved club pay ongoing bills like rent, utilities, payroll to staff, and other necessities, it will not be able to continue to operate. Swing 46 will be forced to close its doors permanently and NYC will lose another precious live music venue, and the world will lose the only permanent space dedicated to big band swing dancing...."

Hi Alisdair,
But looking for suggestions on an easy way to mark-up scanned music PDF's (not derived from notation software) in teaching, to indicate picking direction, fingerings etc.,There are a few. all are a little different, but very similar. Firstly, though, be careful how you save the scanned file. Options are usually TIFF, RAW, or PDF. 1) I think Finale can actually open up scanned filers now. Double check that, but If correct, once the file is opened up, 'save as' Finaly file (.mus), and it can be worked with. 2) Probably the easiest - Acrobat and other PDF programs are editable. The fingerings, &c, can simply be added in. 3) Most photo apps can be edited in layers. I like PhotoPad Image Editor. It can open PDFs and they can be edited. 4) Just about every expensive (and subscription at this point) program today has a stand alone, free (open source), non-subscription alternative. Once I get past the learning curve, I usually prefer them. I'm sure their are newer options out there also, but these will work with a little patience. Of course, there's always the quicker option of printing out the files, adding the fingerings and notations, and re-scanning to PDF. Hope this helps, Bobby -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. |

Totally agree with JBM7 -?
If you use an iPad (or similar) ForScore is such a great app - so easy to write on pdf's, scan, organize, etc. Bluetooth page turner well worth it if you need to
change pages live. It really is incredible.

Kevro2000 just stimulated my brain...?I had a duh moment I use GIMP2 (an open source photoshop like free software download) everyday. Import the music PDF to GIMP2.? There are dozens of mark-up tools to edit the sheet (text, magic markers, highlighters, pencil , pens, etc...).? Save.? Done.

I use the ForScore iOS app to store all my PDF scans in iCloud. Mark-up is done in the app using an digital pencil (Apple or Logitech) on an iPad. ForScore has scan-to-pdf feature that eliminates the hassle of importing a file. It's also got the ability to share locally with other app users via Bluetooth. Also works with Bluetooth page turner/ MIDI pedals. It is a feature-rich application with a very intuitive user interface, so getting up and running is pretty quick and easy. The downside is the cost of the tablet and pencil, and more if you add a stand and a tablet holder, but when you look at all the tools that a iPad adds to the pocket of your gig bag, it's pretty much an essential piece of gear.

Hi, I'm a digital dinosaur.? I'd print out the sheet music to paper from the digital file.? Mark it up with pen. Then scan the sheet to save again as a digital file. Tom Samarati

Re: Jazz Standard in New York City Closes Doors for Good
Hi Alisdair,
And now...NYC so-called 'leadership' simply refuses to understand that without that stature of being considered the cultural capitol of the world, it's just another city. People are exiting in droves at this point. Even Wall Street institutions are moving their head offices out of the city. Without the clubs, concert halls, and Broadway, why would anyone want to consider the schlepp to an upper tier restaurant or hotel? I'm optimistic. But I can't for the life of me figure out why, except that NYC has survived bad leadership in the past. That may not be enough. -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. |
Re: Jazz Standard in New York City Closes Doors for Good
Thanks Bob.... And now...
Yet another one of New York’s most beloved venues is in danger of closing for good. The legendary Birdland Jazz Club has been a fixture in the jazz community and one of NYC’s hottest destinations since it was founded in 1949 can be added to the list of venues which can no longer afford to operate. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Tom D'Angora, who also spearheaded the efforts to save the West Bank Cafe in December 2020. |
