Re: Voltages...
Both of the regulators are linear and get hot.? The heat could be better dissipated with a series resister with a heat sink to the chassis.? PCB's don't do well with heat coupled to them (via the device leads).? If the 5V reg could stand the extra current, it might be better to source the 3V power from the 5V instead of 12V.
I would have measured it myself but I am still inquiring parts and have not started the build.? I also might wait for the revised manual to make it an easier task. John N2NOL |

Re: Voltages...
James Zdunic
It is not very likely anyone has measured the current draw from the 5v and 3.3v regulators because you would have to take them out of the jackal circuit to add an any amp measuring device between them and the circuits they provide power to.
Just curious, why you are asking? |

开云体育Hello Mile,
Thank you for mentioning this to try and help me. This is no longer an issue for me and I figured I’d post up the findings to close the loop on this:
I spoke with Al about my measurements and after checking a few things concluded that there was nothing wrong. ?The near 12v readings were simply floating voltages in open circuits because the CPU wasn’t installed. ?This was determined by using an ohm meter
and measuring back to the 12v supply circuit which did not show and low resistance.

Re: 5” display wiring...
Yes. Al is an accomplished photography buff (he shot the cover photo for the November, 2018, issue of QST) and we are re-shooting much of the directions for building JackAl...especially the construction of the cables! We know there are sections where we need more guidance, and we think we will make the new manual much better. The good news is that I'm doing the build for V5 and, since I have less construction talents than Al, we're identifying trip-spots in the manual. The bad news is that I'm doing the build for V5. We'd be much further along if I wasn't having issues with a menuing class I'm writing the Morse Code Tutor project that will be the subject of a paper I'll be giving at the Four Days In May (FDIM) conference. Last Thursday I got an email from the organizer that said the papers were due March 1. (Thursday was Feb. 28th!) Hell, I didn't even have the code done, let alone a prototype that I could center the paper around. Needless to say, that derailed the V5 build and photo shoot that Al and I are working on. I told the FDIM people my paper would be late...I have a feeling I wasn't the only one...so Al and I are back to work. We'll keep you all posted. Jack, W8TEE

Re: 5" display wiring...
Al had a fix for that, but I've slept since then, so I don't remember what the fix was. Check the voltage, as I think it was low on the one that got better as it warmed up. I'll pass this on to Al. (He's more productive than I am and one reason is he doesn't read all of his emails!) Jack, W8TEE

The interrupt pin on the 5” is located as my photo
