Been ordering parts all morning, also bought quantities of everything but the display and teeney. Will have spares once everything arrives. (10m each of the coax types).
Let me know?

Subject: [JackAl] JackAl Parts Kit

As I look into ordering the miscellaneous parts for my JackAl board it becomes obvious quickly that ordering parts in some quantity makes sense. It would seem that ordering parts for 10 kits may make sense if I can get 9 others to buy into this idea.?

Specifically, I am only talking about the parts on the first page of the parts list. I might add some RG174 or RG316 as well. The other parts are probably more easily handled by each of us on our own depending on what we want.

I would like to package a complete set of parts to keep things simple even though I and most likely others have some parts on hand already. I'm not doing this as a business but simply to keep costs down.

Expected cost(including shipping(US only unless convinced otherwise) will be what it costs me- no profit(and thus no guarantees/returns/etc.) and hopefully minimal hassle.

If you want to join my buy, please contact me. If there is enough interest, I will order parts this weekend.?
?
Thanks,

Mark

Re: Acceptable parts

As Jack said, the critical spec is amperage. ?This holds true for the 3.3 V regulator as well and another point on the 3.3V regulator. ?I had a handful of 3.3V TO-220 style regulators on hand. ?(They were not the specified LD1086V33 1.5 amp type.) ?Luckily, I checked the spec sheet on the ones I had and though they were TO-220, the pin-out was wrong. ?The LD1086V33 has totally different pinout from the ones I had on hand and looking at the front of the LD1086V33, its pins are "ground, input, output". ?The TO-220 3.3V regulator I had on hand was a 1.0 amp (not the 1.5A needed) version with the same "input, ground, output" pin arrangement of the 7805 5Volt regulator. ?If one of these 3.3 volt regulators were to be used in the JackAl, I suspect some potentially catastrophic damage would occur. ?

Also on the LD1086V33 the tab (and the heat sink if you don't insulate it) will be hot to 3.3V so don't accidentally ground the tab of the 3.3V regulator with the board powered up. ?

My bad. This error was pointed out to me several days ago and we did change the BOM on the site to:

LM7805CT/NOPB-ND

The critical spec is the amperage, as there has to be enough power for the board, but more importantly, the display. 1.5A should be fine.

Because this is a new product, please visit our web site (hamreadiodesigns.com)? often as we expect to make changes in the supporting documentation. Also, I will continue to try and improve certain elements of the software in the future. When either one changes, we will make a post here to inform the group.

I'm ordering a Raspberry Pi 3A+, and thought if this was acceptable, then I'd just add it to my order.

Some of us, living in the extreme corners of the world (at least it seems that way) have no local source of parts. Also, because of choosing to move to this corner, and not wishing to pay to move 50 years of Ham junk boxes across the continent, I have no parts inventory to speak of. ?So, yes, please let's make a group buy that will make an old geezer on a fixed income smile like a contented cow in a pasture of bulls.

Re: JackAl Parts Kit

Glad to see this, Mark, and it makes sense. Al and I investigated quantity discounts on both the display and the Teensy/audio boards, but (as I recall), there was only a 3% discount on the display and not much more on the PJRC products. It simply wasn't worth the effort.

However, when our builder's group ordered the JackAl board, I ordered enough parts to get the 25-count discount on a number of the parts and that does make a difference. Also, it never hurts to ask any vendor, big or small, for a quantity discount. Vendors like Digikey, Mouser, Arrow, etc. usually show their discounts. Tayda Electronics does and we use them a lot because they have a distribution center in CO so common parts arrive fairly quickly. eBay vendors will also entertain discounts, just ask.

I wish you well in this effort!

Re: Acceptable parts

The standard 7805 will work much better as a 5V, 1.5A? regulator than the "LM7812CT/NOPB-ND? (Digikey)"??12V regulator called out in the revised bag of parts!
(good intentions to add part #s and sources, but not yet fully checked.? call it a cut and paste error)

Happy to see that the new bag of parts is calling out for ALL stackable headers!
? ? Using all stackable headers will allow for the Teensy board stack to be on both sides of the JackAl card.
There may be reasons why someone would want to do this.
Among these reasons is easier access to the additional K66 ports are available on the bottom side of the Teensy 3.6 board.
? ?Boards already exist that break this out in a standard 100 mil DIP too.
Also need to figure out the best way to add a 2nd USB port / host mode and Ethernet PHY (preferably using the K66 Ethernet MAC)

If in the end, you only stack up from the JackAl card; you can easily clip off the extended pins from the bottom of the JackAl.

Gary

I have a similar case and made the front panel out of pcb using the steel panel as a pattern.?

Looks like factory damage for sure. ?Very rare for chip shooters or process equipment to do this sort of damage for the record. ?However accidental impact between final test & packaging is common. ?Like it got dropped or banged into by something. Doesn¡¯t take much to knock off smt parts. ?Damage like this is much more likely to occur where humans are involved. ?Ask me how I know.

That means it was done at the factory.? I didn't see how it could get that kind of damage in the box I shipped it in.? Probably done by pick and place process

Re: Jackal board from QRPGuys

Thanks Doug! I didn't have the .parts in the email address I sent earlier!

I couldn't see any damage from shipping on the box or envelope.?

I¡¯ve never been much good at making or drilling radio cabinets. However, I¡¯d doing better this time.
I¡¯ve had a 9.5x7.5x4.5 steel cabinet that seem perfect. I found it on eBay after I saw it in pics on the uBitx forums - blue steel with a white plastic frame.
Lots of room but you will need to bond the panels for shielding as they use a plastic frame.
Also I discovered the steel is thin but very hard. I had to purchase some cobalt drills to handle it.

To cut the display opening I used a metal, cutting wheel on my Dremel. I used the data sheet info from Buy Display site carefully measuring and penciling the outline.
Then I used the dremel to cut into the metal and along the pencil line. I stay just inside the line and then used a sanding disk to grind along and up to the pencil line.
As you can see it cut nice and strait something I could not do as nicely with a nibble tool and file nor as quickly.

To anticipate some questions, I used some old rub-off words from a box of dry transfer sheets made by Datak. I¡¯ve had them for 20 or 30 years so don¡¯t know if Datak is still around.?
I sprayed some clear coat paint to protect the lettering.
