Bishop Pass Permit 9/4/24 4
I cancelled a Bishop Pass permit for one on September 4 a few minutes ago. It has not appeared as available yet. I think that the system might release it at 10 am Eastern/7 am Pacific. Since the JMT trailheads are booked up for that date, I thought I'd post here hoping that someone who can use it grabs the permit when it shows up. Of course, there is another big opportunity for permits when the two week window arrives and Inyo releases what were formerly called "walk up" permits.

Mule resupply reserved for Charlotte Lake on August 15. 3
We have 3 participating now. I think we can add 2 or maybe more (the 3 of us are only shipping 4 or 5-day resupplies). We're splitting the total cost, which is $726 plus another $50 for each additional person (of which I've already paid $726). You can contact me before July 25 if you like to share in the resupply. Or contact Danica Berner directly (see contact info at https://pinecreekpackstations.com/; phone works better than email). They can add you to the group and discount your price accordingly.

Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows next week 9
All, I am hiking Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows starting next Monday. I will go back and re-read Inga's section hike (in the opposite direction). In the meantime, what are the things I should watch out for? There is another heat wave till this Friday, so I expect the streams to be full, so I am concerned. I am starting here: https://andrewskurka.com/psa-hazardous-high-sierra-creeks-list-map-alternates/ I have to cross Bubbs Creek (twice), Tyndall Creek, Wallace Creek, Wright Creek, Bullfrog lake outlet and of course, Whitney Creek (I vividly remember crossing this during HST). (Am I missing a crossing)? Any guidance would be appreciated. -- anand http://www.anands.net Next art show: Fremont festival of the arts, Aug 3rd and 4th

Tarp or tent 30
Hi guys, I will be doing the JMT in August and thinking of saving weight. Whats your experience - will a tarp be enough or should I go with a tent? I'm from Europe so will probably choose Nemo Horner OSMO 1P or Big Agnes - Fly Creek HV UL1 or Big Agnes Tiger Wall. Thank you, Christine

How lenient are rangers with backpackers who are overdue their exit date? 5
Because of the likely detour caused by the South San Joaquin River Bridge damage, it may take three to four days longer for us to complete our JMT trip. Would that be a problem with rangers?

Skurka’s Over the Top route SOBO 9
My niece and I are going SOBO starting from the Mono/Parker Pass TH 7/7. We have been monitoring the situation at the site of the bridge over the SF of the San Joaquin to determine if there's any chance of a water crossing - seems sketch - or do we commit to the Piute->town of Bishop->Bishop Pass workaround. The choice has food resupply implications for our planning. We've seen FarOut comments from several NOBO PCTers that have successfully used this route. However, after examining the route on CalTopo, we are concerned about taking the route going southbound. In particular the descent back down to the trail seems fairly steep from 9800' to 9400'. Has anyone seen a report on using the route going south? Thanks John Get Outlook for iOS

Mt Whitney west side switchbacks in mid-July this year and best guesses for JMT NOBO conditions in July-August. 14
So, I'm planning my treks for the summer and have a couple questions for the group. I have a set-in-stone week off on the July 4th week to work with, plus other flexible time I can take off during the summer. The first question is how likely it is that the west switchbacks up to Mt Whitney will be climbable in mid July (say between July 12th and 14th)? I figure with the average snow year we just had, the west side should be have melted out enough to reach the summit from that side. I’d be coming up from the PCT. If the east side isn’t clear enough to descend directly to the portal, I would go down via Shepherds Pass or Kearsarge Pass. My plan is to leave a resupply package at Horseshoe Meadows with enough food to get to any of those exit points based on conditions mid-July. BUT that got me thinking: I could just keep going NOBO on the JMT since I found the area between Glen Pass and Muir Trail Ranch one of the most scenic parts of the JMT when I did it SOBO in 2020 (of course, the other parts are great too). The South Fork San Joaquin River Bridge being out is a complication. How likely is the river to be low enough in mid to late July to ford the river near the missing bridge? The detour skips some of my favorite parts of the JMT, so probably wouldn’t bother continuing if I couldn’t get to MTR directly. So, approximately 2 weeks along PCT section G from Walker Pass to Whitney (add 5 days or so to exit via Kearsarge), or 4-5 weeks to Yosemite Valley. I could also exit from Kearsarge Pass, take 2-3 weeks back in civilization (my boss would appreciate that), and then restart JMT NOBO from there in mid August. Better chance of fordable rivers then. Getting a permit may be an issue for a restart. So, really the final question is: Split the trek in two to be more likely to be able to do Kearsarge to Happy Isles with better chances in August or tempt fate by trying for a full 5 week uninterrupted trek (except for maybe some zero days in Independence and/or Reds Meadow during resupplies there)? Thoughts?

Help planning JMT section hike logistics 3
Hi All, I'm planning my 3rd section of the North to South JMT over July 4th weekend. I last exited at Mono Pass/Mosquito Flats coming up through the recesses. As I'm planning that as the entry and my exist as Pine Creek, I'm seeing that I'm hiking 58 miles to do 23 miles of the JMT. While doable in four days, it may not be the most enjoyable. Here's the route for reference: https://caltopo.com/m/9R1EL As an alternative, I was thinking an approach and exit via the west side might work, but I'm not as familiar with that side. I'd appreciate some info on the ability to hitch a ride or get some sort of transportation from the South side of Florence Lake back up to Thomas A Edison Lake or any other ideas. Thanks in advance, Tim

Camped June 10th at Backpacker's campground. Very warm. Place got full by day end. Camped June 11th past LYV close to a creek near where Cloud's Rest trail branches off from JMT. Most of the traffic past LYV was day hikers to Cloud's Rest or Half Some. No sign of any snow so far. Our camping area had just us two backpackers and another group of 2. Lots of mosquitos. Camped June 12th past Cloud's Rest and about half mile past Forsyth Trail junction. We were the only ones there. Serious mosquito infested but lots of water and very nice peaceful forest ambiance. There was no snow towards Cloud's Rest and almost none on the ledge. Little snow after that here and there requiring no equipment except treking poles. Camped June 13th at Sunrise camp. There were some other campers but not crowded. Serious mosquito infestation. Little to no snow, on the way. Look for a a beautiful stream between after the lake and well before sunrise. It is like a sheet of waterfall at a 30 degree angle. Enjoyed sitting in it and getting wet. This was brilliant. Headed back on 14th to LYV via JMT. Six or so tricky fallen tree crossings on this, trail in the mostly burnt forest below Cloud's Rest. Great views and beautiful streams. Camped 15th at LYV. Crowded but okay. Lots of most vicious evening time mosquitos. Jumping in Merced River at LYV priceless. SQ

Mule Pack Carry MTR to Selden Pass
I am planning to stay at MTR Sept 1-3 on my NOBO JMT hike. Is anyone interested in splitting a mule carry of their gear up to Selden Pass on either Sept 2 or 3? The cost is $288 each for 2 people (I'm one of the people!). I assume a mule can handle 2 packs but I'll make sure if anybody is interested. Selden Pass is their limit for a 1-day trip. Selden Pass is 3200' of climbing with full food, btw. -- Byron Nevins Lead Moderator of JMT at groups.io

A question about pass strategy for late season 17
I’m planning our SOBO trip from Aug 23-Sept 15. The wisdom says that one’d better climb over passes in the morning. I understand that this strategy is for taking advantage of better snow conditions in the morning and avoiding afternoon storms. However this strategy also makes my daily itinerary planning less flexible, like always camping before a pass (at least for big ones). Do you think in our hiking window of 8/23-9/15, afternoon storms still a concern (I know snow should be out of the equation by that time)? I had experience of climbing over Forester in a late June day, but that was a dry year. Thanks in advance for your input. Happy trails! Jingbo

Friday or Sunday entry at Bishop Pass South Lake
I am planning a trip from Bishop Pass to Kearsarge Pass starting either Friday, September 6 or Sunday, September 8. I'm thinking I would have better odds of getting a permit on the Sunday start date. I'll be applying for the permit 2 weeks before. Has anyone had experience getting permits for Bishop Pass?

Current backpacking & camping conditions between sunrise camp and reds meadow campground on JMT 5
I am not experienced and backpacking conditions requiring ice axe (occasional clampons are okay). Can someone update current hiking conditions between LYV and Clouds Rest then to Sunrise camp then to Tuolumne Meadows … to Reds campground. I want to turn back where either camping conditions ie. difficult to pitch a tent or having to use ice axe or constant clampon use start. How far should I expect to go? Thanks in advance Sohail

Iva Bell Hot Springs 14
Hello Folks We will hike JMT SOBO starting from Tuolumne Meadows late August to mid-September. I’m planning our daily itinerary. In the section from Reds Meadow to Silver Pass I would like to take the route that takes us to Iva Bell Hot Springs instead of the official JMT trail through Purple Lake. Is this a good idea? Thanks! Ultralight Backpacks Used by Women on the JMT and InReach/Garmin units 46
Hi All: I am planning my first thru-hike and will be replacing my Gregory Deva 60 with something lighter. I will also be getting some sort of minimal communication system to be able to let family know where I am and that all is well. I would love to hear from women who are in the 5' 1" to 5' 5" height range on packs they have liked. On 3-4 day trips I have spoken with people who have loved their ULA Circuit and their Z-packs. It seems Nunatak Bears Ears and Gossamer Gear Mariposa are highly rated on the Gear Lab sites. The issue with all 4 of these packs is that they do not seem to be offered at REI. So, the only way to test these out is by ordering them, loading them, trying them on local walks, and deciding. I would love to hear from women about their favored thru-hike backpack so I can short list. If you have had a bad experience, I would like to hear about that as well, since that will help me watch for things and maybe remove something from my list. And, on a separate note, I am also looking into getting something for communication. I do not need anything fancy nor should it have exorbitant monthly or usage charges. Something where I can send a message to family letting them know that I am okay; and something for an SOS (though I hope I do not need to use it). I am hoping this is a good year for the JMT -- we did not have the crazy snows of last year, but it was wet enough, so I hope we do not have crazy wildfires like we did in 2020-2022. Thanks in advance, CJ
