How lenient are rangers with backpackers who are overdue their exit date?

Because of the likely detour caused by the South San Joaquin River Bridge damage, it may take three to four days longer for us to complete our JMT trip. Would that be a problem with rangers?

You should be able to extend your permit exit date before your trek. Either on Recreation.gov or when you pickup your permit. Where are you starting/exiting from?

I usually pad my exit dates just in case of delays or that I'm too slow.

Thank you. I have updated my exit date to be 3 days later than my original.

A day or two over?? No biggie.

5-10 days over?? There's going to be questions.

I'm glad you changed your exit date. Technically, this is the date your permit ends and since you choose it, it's best to add extra days.?
