Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows next week

All,

I am hiking Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows starting next Monday. I will go back and re-read Inga's section hike (in the opposite direction).? In the?meantime, what are the things I should watch out for?

There is another heat wave till this Friday, so I expect the streams to be full, so I am concerned.?

I am starting here:?

I have to cross Bubbs Creek (twice), Tyndall Creek, Wallace Creek, Wright Creek, Bullfrog lake outlet and of course, Whitney Creek (I vividly remember crossing this during HST). (Am I missing?a crossing)?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much about the water crossing.

I hiked the route about a month earlier in a fairly heavy snow year with an early melt and didn't have problems with these crossing. Tyndall was the hardest but no big problem. They were good practice to prepare for the major crossing further north.

I looked at the current FarOut comments for these crossing and none mentioned crossing difficulties.

You may have missed Rock Creek depending upon your route.

This doesn't account for local heavy rain activity.

When you you are on the switchbacks heading down into Vidette Meadow, take time to stop and take in the views. Spectacular.

Hi Frank

Thank you. Yes, I did miss Rock Creek (in fact, I am camping near that). Noted about Tyndall.

Hi David

I will, thank you.? Two years ago, while climbing up from Virginia Lakes to Squaw Lakes, we were trying to beat a thunderstorm and I rushed past Tully Hole and not taking it all in. I regret it.?

On my PCT hike I was there 4 weeks ago. Streams were a cakewalk. Now all the remaining snow (not much then) may have melted.

The problems may be the heat and mosquitos.

Hello Anand,

My son and I just finished this section NOBO a week ago on the 8th of July. ?As noted by Frank all crossing were fairly low key. ?The only crossings where we got our feet wet were at Tyndal and Whitney Creek. Both were inconsequential at the time of our crossing. ?Tyndal we did with a PCTer and she didn’t barefoot. ?I opted to do it with shoes but without socks or insoles. ?After crossing in hindsight I also would have done it barefoot it was that easy and water very clear to negotiate rocks. ?Whitney was barefoot as it’s basically a swimming hole where almost all there at the time of our crossing took the opportunity to do just that, soak feet, take a dip and air dry relaxing in the shade. ? All other crossings, Wallace, Wright and Rock Creek had logs to cross approximately 30 yards up stream with very minor bushwacks to deal with. ?If you’re uncomfortable with any of the logs all the crossing were very manageable. ?Rock Creek was no more than upper calf deep judging by watching others who opted to go through the water, I’m 5’9” for reference. ?Wallace and Wright it was only a matter of not wanting to get feet wet as the rock hops were covered by just a few inches of moving water. Of course the monsoon activity we’re seeing now can change things and conditions may change.
Best of luck and hope you have an excellent trip!

Cheers,
Glenn
