Re: Insights on National Park Closure Risks?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYeah. Maybe Ravi can hike till Big Arroyo and turn back. It¡¯s better logistically as well.?On Aug 31, 2021, at 7:26 AM, Peter Hirst <peter.p.hirst@...> wrote:

Re: Insights on National Park Closure Risks?
You may have a bigger issue on the HST than possible Park closure:? where do you finish your hike? You can't exit through a Forest, so you have to make it a loop.? I would take the fact that you have the permit as an indication of the Park's plans, but you will have to make it a loop or a point-to-point within the Park.? You can also monitor the Park website, and call the Wilderness Office for info on closure plans

Insights on National Park Closure Risks?
If anyone with insight into whether the National Parks might follow the lead of the National Forests and close, I'm sure many of us in the group would appreciate information. ?Especially if anyone knows people within the National Parks who is familiar with the current thinking. ?Like many others, my plans to enter on the east side via an Inyo trailhead was automatically cancelled and refunded. ?But I was lucky enough to get a permit from Sequoia National Park last night for the High Sierra Trail. ?However, I am reluctant to make plans and fly out from the east coast fearing that the next shoe to drop will be the National Parks.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýJust received following from MammothTo Our Mammoth Family, We would like to inform you that per the U.S. Forest Service, the Inyo National Forest goes into?full closure?tomorrow,?August 31, through at least?September 17.What this means is that the Mammoth Bike Park, Via Ferrata, Adventure Center and Scenic Gondola are now closed for the summer season. Camp High Sierra is now closed as well and Tamarack Lodge will be closed through at least?September 17.While there are no fires threatening Mammoth Lakes at this time, wildfires continue to spread across the west and firefighting resources are extremely limited. If you have activity reservations, event tickets, or lodging reservations for Camp High Sierra during this time, you will be granted a full refund. Our team is working on your cancellation (no need to contact us) and will send you a confirmation email showing that a refund of your full deposit will be made to your original form of payment within 5-7 business days. If you have lodging reservations for Tamarack Lodge, please call?800.MAMMOTH?and our team will assist you with rebooking or refunding your reservation. For more information about Mammoth Mountain¡¯s operations, please visit our?Hours of Operation?page. Our thoughts are with the firefighters and communities across the west affected by these horrible fires. We continue to send resources to the Tahoe area to assist wherever we can. Thank you for your understanding, Mammoth Mountain On Aug 30, 2021, at 6:11 PM, Will Cronan <wecronan@...> wrote:

Unfortunately, yes. You'll probably get an email from Recration.gov shortly with refund information. I just got mine (my permit was also for September 8).?

And to make it even more official, Recreation.gov just sent me a cancellation notice for my wilderness permit on September 8.
"A location closure has been issued for Inyo National Forest - Wilderness Permits due to Fire. Since this location closure overlaps with the dates for your trip, we have cancelled your reservation and you will receive a full refund. " |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThe wind prediction for the next week is primarily east. Tahoe, Nevada and rest of the country are taking the smoke now. Mammoth area seems clear, at least today.?On Aug 30, 2021, at 5:30 PM, Inga <ingasadventures@...> wrote:

Re: Hoods
I¡¯ve been using the Outdoor Research Astroman sun hoody for about 2 years. It¡¯s the same material as the Astroman shirt but in hoodie form. What sets it apart besides being really lightweight is it¡¯s got a front zipper which is great for dumping heat. At water crossings I like to dip my hat in water and then put the hood over it. The hood gets wet and creates a cooling effect for at least a little while as you hike.? ? When I pair it with a cap, I do still apply a little sunscreen on my nose and cheeks or else they have gotten burned in the past. The other thing I like about sun hoodies compared to a wide brimmed hat is it¡¯s dual purpose - the hood is nice layer for breaking the wind and keeping your head warm during cold mornings.? |

It look like it is confirmed. ?PCTA also confirms it:?https://www.pcta.org/2021/pacific-crest-trail-is-closed-on-all-national-forests-in-california-89474/
So far, I am reading that the National Parks are NOT affected and I assume that if one stays entirely on the trails in the National Parks and doesn't venture outside the boundaries of the national parks, that would not violate the order? So the JMT/PCT within the national parks would be open? There was a single permit for the High Sierra Trail for next week that I just grabbed in case I can make something confined entirely to SEKI work, but a lot of logistics would have to change!? |
