Hi friends! I am planning a short 5 day trip into Rae Lakes basin from Kearsarge pass and was wondering what the latest conditions were on Glen Pass? also, was wondering if there’s any sweet camping spots in the Rae Lakes area off the beaten path.. Thank you!! Kathy

Re: Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows next week
On my PCT hike I was there 4 weeks ago. Streams were a cakewalk. Now all the remaining snow (not much then) may have melted.
The problems may be the heat and mosquitos.

Re: Onion valley to Horseshoe meadows next week
Hi Frank
Thank you. Yes, I did miss Rock Creek (in fact, I am camping near that). Noted about Tyndall.

I wouldn't worry too much about the water crossing.
I hiked the route about a month earlier in a fairly heavy snow
year with an early melt and didn't have problems with these
crossing. Tyndall was the hardest but no big problem. They were
good practice to prepare for the major crossing further north.
I looked at the current FarOut comments for these crossing and
none mentioned crossing difficulties.
You may have missed Rock Creek depending upon your route.
This doesn't account for local heavy rain activity.

Tarptent makes a tent like that. Good design except sidewind vulnerable
Still wondering why I wander......
|
I used a zPacks Hexamid Twin for seven years and hundreds of nights before it finally fell apart. By then, zPacks had discontinued the model. I bought a Duplex and an Altaplex and didn't like either one, and ended up selling both. The Hexamid had a removable floor which was great and was easy to pitch. I found getting a good pitch difficult with the Altaplex and the Duplex required a lot of ground space to properly set up. Life has prevented me from doing much backpacking or camping lately but I did purchase a Big Agnes Copper Spur 1 person tent last year just to have something to use if the opportunity arises (haven't used it yet, however). If I get out at all these days it is very briefly so the additional weight is a non-issue. I will have to figure out a UL shelter at some point when I can do longer thru hikes again. For me the Hexamid Twin was perfect and I don't think there's anything like it on the market today.
|
The Altaplex has served well in torrential rain for me.? It is also easily repairable with cuban?tape.??
Ask them about it - they are very responsive and helpful:

I have done the JMT and Colorado trail with duplex. ?It’s a great tent does fine I. Rain. ?Be aware it is a single wall tent and sweats especially in wetter Colorado. ?All in all it is a fine product. ?I carry the duplex when I’m solo. ?It’s super lite and I like the room. ?

Hello Byron, I'm considering the Zpacks Plex Solo right now. Just before ordering it. The only thing I'm not sure is it's performance in rain. I have read several reviews and I can't say if it will stand wind and rain.
Did you remember reading anything about this`I have read one guy who tried a small part of the JMT and did not like the tent in rain.
The weight and price are gold though
