BalenaEtcher was able to properly create
the image on the USB stick.? I did load the stick into my legacy linux
box and while it won't boot it, I was able to inspect the stick and
found 3 partitions and was able to inspect the main partition and the
file structure and it appears to be correct.? It' a shame that 89GB of
that 128GB stick was left un-allocated. Getting this to boot in
my Older HP Pavilion was a bit of a challenge.? I finally had to bring
up the boot menu and physically select the Ubuntu device under the UEFI
boot manager to get it to boot.? Without doing that it would always

on a USB 3 stick.? Took about 15 minutes for it to completely load and
get up to the desktop.? I would not expect the speed of a SSD, but this
is USB 3 and should perform about the speed of and older IDE drive.? So
really evaluating this is going to be quite difficult.? I think I just
go fetch a small SSD drive and then write this image to that and see
what happens. When I went to shut it down it took almost 3
minutes to do that. Recommendation:? Change the startup and
shutdown from a blank screen to message output.? The boot-up and
shutdown message are there for a reason.? If the process aborts for some
reason, you have the ability to determine where in that process it
happened to make it easier to troubleshoot. I did wander through
the menuing system and was pleasantry surprised to see my software
package called 10QSOLogger is installed.? But it does not run.? There is
no Java Run-time Environment installed so it aborts. It did not
take advantage of the Dual monitors, although your Desktop Logo did
appear on both screens. Brought up the Terminal and did a df -k
to have a look at the usage and the main partition is 70% full? That
does not give the user a lot of room.? I also had a look at /var/lib and
did see a mysql folder? and all seems to be good there, but I had a
look at the file at /etc/mysql//mysql.conf.d/mysqld.cnf and it has just
about everything commented out so the server is not running correctly.
and this is why the gentleman is having issues with CRQLog.? I can
provide my config file I am using on my Ubuntu system if anyone wants
it. I'll report back when I get this all built up on a SSD, once I
figure out where I'm going to mountcd /etc/mysql ?it. Jeff

HamPi Wins a new Award from SourceForge
HamPi has just been recognized with
a Community Leader award by SourceForge. This honor is
awarded only to select projects that have reached significant milestones in terms of downloads and user engagement from the SourceForge community.
This is a big achievement, as the HamPi project has qualified for
this award
out of over 500,000 open source projects on SourceForge.
SourceForge sees nearly 30 million users per month looking for, and developing, open source software.
This award badge
will now appear on HamPi's project page.
To recognize HamPi’s achievement, we’ve awarded Dave Slotter, W3DJS with the
Community Leader award, which you can see below:

I've actually mixed a couple Ham packages together.? HamPi which is a full OS build, and Jason KM4ACK's "Build a Pi" which adds in PAT / Winlink and a few other things.? It installs inside like an application and takes a few hours.?? I just run it overnight.? It's worked fine with HamPi, but the icons for running the different applications gets all out of order and not in the neat folders like Dave's HamPi has.? Yeah, I'm one of those with a couple older Dells without UEFI. Tom KA7VIK

HamPC uses the latest Xubuntu, which right now is Xubuntu 22. So installing this is equivalent to installing another OS, as opposed to installing an application that uses the existing OS? I'm less enthused about doing that. It would seem to be much more work to get there. Particularly if I read things right and it wants UEFI to boot, I think there might be *ONE* machine here that'll do that, and it's my file server, which I ain't messing with! If we were talking about installing an application, then it'd be a whole different story, and I could try it out on pretty much any linux box here. -- Member of the toughest, meanest, deadliest, most unrelenting -- and ablest -- form of life in this section of space, ?a critter that can be killed but can't be tamed. ?--Robert A. Hi Dave and others, I seem to have similar boot issues.? I did try it on two different Dell XPS laptops I have (they are older).? I bought a new 128GB USB stick and installed on it using BelanaEtcher and I also tried the "Imager" that is in Mint linux (I'm a 100% Linux user for at least the last 5 years or so).? When I boot to the USB, the newer laptop says "no operating system found" and the other just has a blinking cursor at the top left.? All files are there so both methods did get the .img on the USB.? Looking at the bios on both laptops I can't find anything about UEFI boot, so that's probably the issue.? I have installed different versions of Linux on these many times with USB, so I know they work.? Just something with HamPC. Anyway, I'll monitor the progress and give it anther try when there are new ideas.? In the meantime, I'm supper happy with HamPi and use it all the time.? Great stuff!? :-) 73, KA7VIK

Installed HamPC on an Evolve III laptop
So this took a few more hours but looks to be considerably better (faster, more stable, and more portable) than running from the USB live image.
This took two USB keys - one 16-32GB (Linux Mint) and one 64GB (uncompressed HamPC image)
1) I used Rufus (Etcher probably works as well) to create a Linux Mint bootable USB key and then booted from that (ESC until given the BIOS menu to select boot device). 2) From there I inserted the second USB key into the other USB port (one on each side) and then opened the Disks tool (LM menu -> Accessories -> Disks) and selected the 64GB drive that is installed ("Biwin SD Card" in mine). 3) At the top right of that window is three dots on top of each other - I clicked on that and clicked "Restore Image" 4) I navigated to the .img file and selected it and clicked on "Start Restoring..." 5) Made a cup of coffee and enjoyed a few of the old (good) Looney Tunes reruns, then rebooted when it said it was done. 6) I had to boot into the BIOS one more time to change the boot order so that "ubuntu" was the first choice.
WiFi worked right out of the gate, along with the Broadband card (if it has an active SIM in it). Audio isn't working yet so I am looking into that - could just be trying to output to the wrong port).
Will update the list if I come across the cause and fix for that.

FREE RADIO FOR NEW LICENSEES
FREE RADIO FOR NEW LICENSEES ? QRZ and Gigaparts have teamed up and made a big announcement late last week at the Huntsville HamFest. They offer?a FREE 5 watt entry level VHF-UHF handheld for every new licensee, up to 30 days after their successful exam. The radio (Explorer QRZ-1) is apparently made by TYT and it’s also sold by Gigaparts for $60. ? Details at??and? ? It is one of the very few initiatives I’ve seen, aimed at incentivizing the growth of our numbers. So let’s all spread the word, encouraging people we know are interested in joining our fold! ? The offer expires October 31, 2022.

Dave, W3DJS, here. I checked out the QRZ and Gigaparts links and they appear to me to be legitimate. Spread the word! -- 73

Hi Christopher,
So, that's why I chose Xubuntu 22 -- it uses Xfce, which Raspberry Pi OS also uses -- that way, the menu system I created for the Pi is also used by the PC. It's nearly identical.
As far as finding the instructions to create a HamPi image, there are two places I'll point you to:
? <-- Ansible source code <-- You can find instructions to build in the wiki
Hope this helps. 73,
