Locked Sticky Message Delays for Members
Please Read: For new members and existing members who lurk in the background and decide to post for the first time, those postings will not appear immediately and that is by design. Posting delays apply only to new members and those who have never posted before. They go to the moderator(s) for approval, before appearing on the site. This is to discourage bogus or inappropriate messages and that is why this site is clean of any spam and attempts by non-members to post material not related to this sites purpose. After one attempt at posting by a new or existing member, and approved by the moderator(s), that delay or approval process no longer applies and postings will appear right away. I hope this explains the delay of some postings and besides, even the moderators get time off every now and then so please be patient. K2WH Bill's QRZ Biography

New Project: Restore S38B Reciever 2
On 6/1/2025 11:42 PM, Leland Bahr wrote: It all started back in 1953 when I was a young kid and got my first receiver, a Hallicrafters S-38C. As a ham, I worked the world with it on 10 meters AM. That said, I have loved Hallicrafters S-38 receivers every since and can't stop collecting them. Right now I have decided to restore one of my S-38B receivers. I purchased it off of eBay around a year ago. The cabinet is not perfect but close to it. When I got it I was excited to restore it but soon found out this would not be easy and I shelved the receiver. The problem I initially discovered was I could not remove the knobs. Some fool had screwed up the Bristol knob set screws to the point it was impossible to remove them no matter what technique I used and I used a lot of them. I finally yanked on the knobs and the two large knob shafts pulled out of the radio along with the knobs. I was able to remove the small knobs using a Allen wrench as these knobs screws were not molested but had Allen instead of Bristle screw heads. Now that I plan to restore the radio I'll need to replace the two main tuning fiber shafts along with new knobs. (Graphite 6mm rods are available from hobby airplane shops) I'll have to restring the dial too. (I use Kevlar kit string when doing this.) The chassis is clean but looks rough. (I think someone must have cleaned the chassis at one point.) Since the dial strings and shafts need to be replace it will be easy to remove the dual tuning capacitor assembly, so I'll be doing that and then spray painting the chassis before putting the tuning capacitor assembly back in place. The dial face lens is not in the best of shape, so I'll replace it too. I initially wanted to purchase a new dial lens but the price is not reasonable. Then I thought of vacuum forming a new one myself but after examining the old lens, I determined it would be much easier and much less costly to just use a thin flat piece of Lexan. I'll just tape it in with aluminum foil and on the outside will look a new original lens. I have checked all the tubes and pilot light and they check out excellent. So that is where I am right now. Lots more to do. Sure hope I don't have the Silver Mica Disease. Plan to replace the usual 90% of all the resistors plus all the paper caps and electrolytics. Then align the radio and clean all the controls. It should be a pretty nice specimen when finished. I've done enough of them to have all the required resistors and capacitors at hand. When I initially started restoring old radios I would always use a resistor with one wattage size larger as this would make the replacement around the same physical size as the original resistor. But in 2025 I might have to replace an old 1/2 watt resistor with one two wattage sizes larger as new resistors seem to be shrinking in size again. Of course I'll replace the power cord with a new 2-wire polarized cord and make the lead swap in the radio so the white wire goes to the rectifier tube and the switch is in the black wire lead. The All American Five radios are a 5th Wonder of the World! It's amazing how well these radios work with so little parts and complexity. It's my experience it takes $50 to $75 worth of parts or more to really restore these radios and it takes 50 to 75 hours of time to really do a good job restoring them. (In many cases you have to replace rubber insulating grommets as well and sometimes replace missing original type labels and graphics. If you tried to sell the radio for what you would have in it, it would never happen. But when the job is finished, you get a rush hard to describe and well worth the effort. I get tons more enjoyment doing this then operating a modern new ham transceiver. My other love is the Hallicrafters SX-71 receiver. Both the moon 38 and 71 receivers were cosmetically designed by the famous Industrial Designer, Raymond Loewy. Lee, w0vt

RCA RF Output Jack 6
Hi, I have a SR-150 which I am refurbishing. The phono (RCA style) RF output jack is somewhat unreliable, even though it looks to be in good condition. Is there an upgrade suggested to replace the jack with another connector? Thanks for any comments or suggestions. Steve N7AQ

60A225 power/tone switch 28
I need a Hallicrafters part number 60A225 power/tone switch. That is the same part number for the power/tone switch in the S-40, S-40A, S-40B, S-85, SX-99 and probably several other Hallicrafters sets using the essentially the same tube lineup. It is the SPST switch element that has failed. The front rotary wafer element is still working. Emil, WD4SCZ

SX 43
Working on a SX 43 and am wondering if others have run into this issue. I have reception on all bands but only when I connect my long wire antenna directly to the RF adjustment pot for the corresponding band. I have not tried to connect my signal generator yet as it¡¯s a little intimidating compared to other simpler radios I¡¯ve aligned. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have replaced the all the caps including the filers.

I have seen center post to ground as high as 150 ohms. It only takes 3 to 5 ohms to start causing problems with speed and weight. It has the biggest effect on the timing capacitors. New P2000 Rear panels 7
I had the rear panel for the P2000 remade. I was missing one. This is the sample artwork on cardboard. I found the closest press board I could find and dropped it off today. They will print me a few extras. If anyone wants one let me know know. I am unsure of cost yet. Just reply with your name and how many you want. Holding this to the original, it is identical. Same exact size, font and data on panel. They did a great Job digitally scanning and cleaning up the writing.
