Stuck ferrite coils 4
Hi all, I know this is a generic question and there's many variables but I thought I'd try. What are some of you guy's tricks to free up stuck ferrite coils? I may have a stuck coil but I'm not sure. It's not in a Hallicrafters but I do know it's kinda a common thing. BTW, it's not from wax. Thanks, 73, and Happy New Year! Bob W4JFA

A good start 10
Life is good. Have an SR-500 on the work bench. I turned it on and set the dial to 7.175. Set the AF and RF gain to max and let it warm up. In the meantime, I unboxed my new TinySA ultra. Ureka, it passed the self-test. Ureka, level cal, no problem. Selected low out, set the frequency to 7.175, set the ultra output to -33db, set the external step attenuator for -40db. I then turned the low gen on and HU RAH the S-meter went to S9 and the audio output meter/load registered 2watts. It was right there I didn't even have to retune the 500. Question for SX-122 Owners 6
Making good strides with mine, working some issues with alignment. I'm wanting to know if the situation with the bandspread below is normal, or if I'm doing something wrong: Bandspread Set, and plates fully meshed: Plates fully open, but Bandspread stops at 3.95 but I can see 4.0 further to the right. Do I have something backwards? Thanks, Fraser, W3UTD

1648.550KHz LSB XTAL FOR SR2000 4
Anyone out there have a LSB carrier xtal 1648.550KHz they would part with. And yes, I have already checked with AF4K and several other sites, no joy. Missing Crystals in the SR-150 3
Hi folks, Does anyone have a source for crystals for the SR - 150? As seen in the recent picture the xtal in the first 10-meter band slot is wrong. It is a 3.5MHz xtal and should be 34.500MHz. The 35.500MHZ is just missing. Thanks, dave wa3gin

SX-115 signals lower on USB than LSB 3
Twenty-six years ago I collected the components for a classic Hallicrafters station. The HT-33A amplifier was sold before I moved cross-country in 2020 (just too heavy) but I finally got around to putting the station together a few weeks ago. The SX-88, SX-115 and HT-32B are all original - and with just cleaning the switches/pots and checking the tubes, work great. The HT-32B is putting out 90 watts, and with a Turner 350D HI mic, gets good audio reports. The only issue is USB signals on the SX-115 are noticeably weaker than on LSB by about 3 S-units. Before I start digging in, has anyone on the list experienced a similar issue and knows how to resolve? Thanks to all and Happy Holidays, de Norm - WA3KEY norm@...

SR-150 RENO 2
Hi Folks, I've started to restore a nice SR-150. Never had one before. I noticed the crystal for 3.5 is missing. From the dust pattern it appears that the crystal was never installed. Also, I noticed under relay K1 a very cool adjustment device on one of the relay contacts that has this contact making prior to the other contact with the use of a tiny adjustment pushpad on the relay swing arm. Anyone know what is the magic going on here with these cascaded relay contacts? Thoughts Welcome and 73 dave wa3gin

S-41G or W or Echophone EC-1A good picture of dial face 5
Never have found a source yet for a replacement dial face for my S41G. This receiver works good and is in excellent physical condition except for the faded dial face. I wonder if anyone has a S41"W" model (white dial), or the Echophone EC-1 with a good dial face that could be photographed such that I could make a new dial face from an emailed attached photo? It's not a premium radio of the past, but is in good enough condition to try to improve the dial face. I also have a good S-20R and a SX101 and a number of other "golden oldies" to go with my "rice boxes". Your assistance would be appreciated. CW Sidetone ideas 16
Good day all I enjoy using various vintage "separates" on CW, with a bug. The common issue is what to do for sidetone when using a straight key or bug. Typically, not music the Rx, and have a fast hand on the RF gain control works well. But, Collins and Drake have a sidetone. Has anyone added a sidetone to HT44/ SX117 or HT32B/SX101 SX115 combos? 73 W8tow

HT-44 Common Problem? 6
This is the second HT-44 where I've run into this problem. I use the HT-44 heavily on CW and my current one has logged hundreds of QSOs in contests. The other day it suddenly had no output on any band, same symptom observed on another HT-44 I owned. In digging into the problem, I found the cause to be the same as on the other HT-44. Resistors R16 and R17 (22K , 2 watt) were cooked and V3, a 12BH7 associated with those resistors tested weak. I replaced the resistors and the 12BH7 and now all is well again. Had to adjust the pots to null the carrier for SSB. I wonder if others have experienced that problem? Not sure if the cause of the failure was the tube, or maybe the two resistors are undersized for the current? 73, Floyd - K8AC

HT-44/SX-117 CW Offset Solution 3
I've finished testing my modification for providing a CW offset when running the HT-44 and SX-117 in transceive mode under control of the receiver VFO. This is a "no-holes" modification that's inexpensive to implement and provides true CW transceive operation. In other words, with your slide switch in XCVR position, you can tune the receiver to a station and call him and you'll be zero beat with him (or very nearly). Without the modification, using transceive mode on CW is useless as calling a station you hear results in you being off his frequency by a difference equal to the frequency of the tone you're listening to. The circuitry resides on a small board mounted near the VFO capacitor leads under the SX-117 chassis. A cable between the HT-44 octal plug and the RCA jack labeled ANT on the SX-117 connects the circuit to a N/O relay contact in the HT-44. When the HT-44 goes to transmit, the relay causes the SX-117 VFO offset to occur. The mod does not affect the stability of the VFO and is easily removed. When operating SSB in transceive mode, you unplug the cable mentioned above and then the offset does not occur. Schematic follows. Probably unreadable and no way to increase the size here, so if interested, let me know and I'll email it to you. 73, Floyd - K8AC

Hallicrafters Radios Prices in 1959
Hi all, Digging in old museum papers sometimes provide some interesting views to the past. See attached. The prices are in 1959 Canadian dollars. Payette Radio was the biggest consumer/industrial electronics supplier in eastern Canada then. 73, Jacques, VE2JFE in Montreal

HT-45 tuning 8
Hello all. I am excited to have found this group. My callsign is W6BPT. I recently acquired a hallicrafters ht-45 loudenboomer. I did the initial tuning via the downloadable manual and the amp works great. My question to the forum is this: Is there a writeup only on the tuning of the amp. I was hoping for something like this so when I go from 40 meters to 20 to 15 it would be a quick reference for quick tuning. Thank you and 73's Brian

SX-140 with 6M Preamp Installed? 2
Anyone seen one like this? I bought this off eBay years ago and it's been sitting in a box until yesterday. Took it out for a look and was surprised to find that I had two more tubes than shown in the manual or schematic. And a large box mounted as shown in the picture with a 6AG5 tube on it's top and a cable running from the box to underneath the chassis. There was also an extra IF looking transformer and an additional 6BA6 mounted between the new trans can and the existing one. I can barely make out, scratched into the top of the box, 6M Preamp and some voltages, I'm guessing are what the cable has to pick off from under the chassis. Tested the tubes and brought it up on the variac and Dim Bulb. Dial lamps light up but no audio (or smoke). Haven't started troubleshooting yet as I got sidetracked with the extra tubes and transformer, not to mention "The Box". Any insight on this? Thanks, K8NN

Taming a VFO - HT46 8
The VFO in my newest HT46 has excessive drift. In standby mode it will drift about 1KHz in the first 15 minutes and then go another 600Hz in the following hour. The VFO drifts downward in frequency so it appears as though the capacitance in the tuned circuit needs more NEGATIVE temperature coefficient. It has a 10pfN750 and an 82pfN80 capacitor for compensation but they aren¡¯t quite doing the job. Following some work by W7ZOI I have experimented with some different series combinations of N750 and NP0 capacitors in place of the 10pfN750. I have reduced the drift to about 10Hz/C but the series combination that produced that adds too much total capacitance to the circuit so it is not a solution. Experimental results and a few calculations would indicate I need a 10pfN1285 capacitor but of course that will be difficult to achieve. What bothers me about all this is that I have two other VFOs of this design - one in an SX146 receiver and the other in an old beat up and abused HT46. Both those VFOs have negligible drift. I have checked and re-checked the components in the offending VFO and I have compared them to what is in the well behaved HT46. Hopefully someone has experience with this or knows about a common cause for such behavior. 73 ¨C Jerry ¨C W0PWE

Non-Hallicrafters question (audio amp) 13
I¡¯m going to build a switch/outlet power box to turn my Harmon-Kardon audio amplifier on/off. I have been using the switched output of my receiver. My question is: Is there a simple circuit to ramp up the 120 v ac ? My thinking is that might be easier on the KT-88 tubes in the amplifier. Or is it unnecessary? Skip Magnuson W7WGM

Identify transformer 15
Still cleaning out cabinets. I have a transformer and cannot remember what it goes to. It has a Hallicrafters part # 050-004270. It has another number that may be a manufacturer's in-house part # or it could be a date code 5247120, perhaps week 20 of 1971???? I have a hunch it may be for one of the SBT rigs. Any good ideas out there????? Walt Cates, WD0GOF https://wd0gof.com/Hallicrafters A majority of acceptance is not proof of correctness. https://wd0gof.com/bible-study/commentaries/
