Is there enough room for an adapter plate? Is because the balls were missing in the old one?
If you remove the rear adjustment screw, (if it has one ) you may be able to replace the balls

? Mark, I talk to some friends most days on 3950. We vacate at 8am due to another net that starts at 8am on 3952. They start regardless if we're still there on 3950 or not. 99% of the time we're gone at 8am but once in a while we need an additional 30 seconds to finish something. That happened this morning. Those guys didn't care and started at 3952 so they QRMed us on 3950 We only?needed an additional 30 fuckin' seconds! And get this, it's some fuckin' prayer net. So they're all into prayer and god but still purposely QRM others. BTW as you know, it's against?FCC rules!

I went down that road. Can't find one online. I would need a double joint 1/4 inch.? That might be possible if I could find some parts.

An alternative would?be to take a page from the ALPHA78 design and install a few fixed variable caps for a couple of your favorite bands and mount the switch for those on the load control shaft until you find the exact replacement cap.? Should be enough room in the final cage for a switch and a couple of caps. I'll keep my eyes open for that air variable load cap.? ?73 dave

Thought I would add my 2 cents worth...
Since it looks like there is a shaft
extender on the cap, that does give you a little bit of room to
work with.
If it were me, I would look for a
solution using some small nylon gears. If you use 2 gears, you are
right, the cap will work backwards. If, you add an idler gear
between the gears (3 gear solution), the cap will rotate in the
correct direction. Use the gears with the same number of teeth on
the front panel shaft and the capacitor shaft to keep the rotation
the same. The number of teeth on the idler gear doesn't matter as
long as the mesh with the other gears is good.
Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A
few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I
ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon).
Fortunately, this was not necessary for me, so I can't comment on
the success potential.

I already purchased the ball bearings and installed them into the race. The cap has warped plates and makes heavy contact.? There is no way I can think of to repair it. I spent hours attempting to align them.? The entire assembly is kicked over and at least
10 plates rub. I may have to revisit this and see if I can somehow get this thing apart and try to repair it.??
I thought of gears and that was my first attempt.? Problem is, There is NO source for???inch bore gears.? I have searched for hours.? All websites.? The only ones I found are at McMaster Carr and they have the wrong bore and are $30!! each.? I would need to
get several sizes and maybe drill them but it would be hundreds of dollars for an experiment.
The only???inch shaft gears I did find are, get this, $70 to $200 each!!??
There is probably something I can find and repurpose for a reasonable price. I am still looking.

How about a piece of 1/2 plastic rod, drill a 1/4" hole down the middle, slice off a couple sections and sleeve them on to the two shafts. Then run an O ring as a belt like Heathkit did on the HW 101?

Even better, I like the idea of two small pulleys and either a dial cord or "o" ring ala Heathkit HW or SB series.
I would be happy to send you two small heathkit pulleys that fit a 1/4 in shaft if you would like.?

C, You are in a tough spot. It hurts. Here is my ?2 cents of hogwash on the topic. If I had that situation, I would want to restore it:? beg for a real SR2000 cap , perhaps from a total basket case, or just maybe there are guys that know how to rebuild the cap. Some people know how to fix stuff. It is way beyond me, but I think of guys that used to fix car fenders and such… way beyond my abilities. ?There are lots of radio groups on line, and there must be lots of caps bent out of shape. Wish I knew how to reach them. ? ?

If, you add an idler gear between the gears (3 gear solution), the cap will rotate in the correct direction. Use the gears with the same number of teeth on the front panel shaft and the capacitor shaft to keep the rotation the same. The number of teeth on the idler gear doesn't matter as long as the mesh with the other gears is good. Also, on rebuilding the original cap. A few years back, I picked up a ball-bearing assortment to use if I ever needed to repair an existing cap (probably from Amazon).
