The end letter is often used by Hallicrafters in the EIA dating of their various receivers but it is not part of the EIA system. Not certain of its significance. Letters normally are A, B, C, D or E so perhaps the letter indicates the day of a five day manufacturing week.

Oops typing error. Code is 199XYZ with X the last number of year and YZ is the week.

The EIA manufacturing date standard for Hallicrafters is 199XYX where 199 is Halicrafters company number, X is the last number in the year of manufacturer and XY is the week of the year. Dachis states the SR-2000 was made from 1965 to 1972. So both of your radios were made in 1967. Radio 1 was made the 24 week and Radio 2 was made the 20 week of 1967 or they were made 4 weeks apart.

I have an SR-150 in very nice cosmetic condition.? I haven't used it in a few years - but I have had it on the air.? I did a little CW with it - but that was rather difficult w/o a sidetone.? I'd like to get it on the air again one of these days.

I would say you're right!? A few of the reasons were that transceivers were generally used mobile, used primarily for SSB and any good Hallicrafters owner also owned a TO Keyer! (or maybe a Heathkit keyer!) In the early 70's, when I first got the Novice license, my very first project was to build a tube type electronic keyer!? I used 2 old J-38? "hand" keys? (From Fair Radio Sales) bolted together side-by-side for a paddle. It worked great! Today, I sometimes hear newer amateurs attempting to use a "Bug" but I almost NEVER hear anyone who can send readable CW with them.? They almost always have the "DIT's" set too fast for the sending speed and/or? the "DAH's" are far too short.......But as always, I digress! I have a KWM-2A.? I would trade it for a nice SR-150!!? I think The SR 150 tops the list of receivers. Note, a lot of people replace the FL1 and the carrier oscillator crystals in their?400's and 2000's with those from the SR-150.

Last summer I picked up a SR 150 and matching power supply/speaker. It was in the typical dirty scratched condition and didn't work. I wanted to say that Walt's repair manual was invaluable. I did the wash down with simple green rather than scrubbing bubbles
because it was available. That worked very well followed by the garden hose and a few days in the summer sun. I sanded the case to bare metal and sprayed it with rustoleum hammered finish pewter. I recapped the supply and the electrolytic capacitors in the
rig per Walt's doc. I followed the alignment tips and found that I needed to shift the USB carrier oscillator a bit to bring up the CW power levels. Thanks Walt, the tips in your manual are gold. I'm not sure if you were a technical writer or not, but I haven't
seen better service docs. I still need to spend time on the vfo tracking across the dial but that can come later. I also added a side tone oscillator as I am primarily a CW op and prefer using a bug. I made up a little board with a couple relays, one to switch
the grid block voltage and one to switch the audio output from my side tone oscillator. I now have 12 volts on the key instead of grid block voltage. This is all easily removable with no non reversible changes and I leave a printed note with the mod details
inside the cabinet in a cool location behind the bottom cover. I am impressed with how stable the vfo is and the nice comfortable sound to the receiver in this model. The first contact was a nice chat with an op in France. Lots of fun!?

its been a very successful morning on the sx100. Did manage an alignment and things seem to be working well.?
now on to pull the face off and do the clean up and restore of it. Also will finish up the remaining bees on the front of the radio.?

It would be better to stick a jumper wire in the correct pins of the socket. That way if you run across a plug you can do it right.

Cut a scrap of #12 wire and shove it in there for the short term.? Then, later, when you run across a relay or vacuum tube with octal plug, disassemble it and make the substitution.

I added to a friend’s SX-100 (and SX-111) a three wire cord, panel mount bayonet fuse holder, and X1/Y2 safety caps on the incoming line and neutral.

I believe it was the norm for 1960s transceivers. ?The Collins KWM-2/A and Drake TR3/4 series transceivers were designed primarily for mobile SSB operation and have similar CW limitations. ? ? I recently acquired my first TR-4Cw and KWM-2A transceivers and the Hallicrafters SR-400A is the better CW performer.? In CW mode, the KWM-2A uses an audio injection scheme into the balanced modulator.? To minimize close-spaced sidebands from the injection scheme, a 1700 Hz tone is used into the modulator then split to the receiver’s AF stage for sidetone. ?A CW tone less than 1700 Hz results in multiple close-spaced carriers just as it does with the Collins 32S-1 transmitter.? I’ve seen several stories that describe FCC citations issued to early 32S-1 CW ops. Later Collins transmitters solved the problem using traditional keying circuitry. ? Paul, W9AC ? ????? ?

For sentimental reasons, I've been on the lookout for an S20 R model, and decided to take a chance on an Ebay sale of an "as is" unit.? The cosmetic appearance didn't look too bad, and the fact that it powers on with at least a hiss?in the speaker, and that it was part of a ham estate,? gave me just enough hope to make an offer that was accepted.? But once I have it in hand I will need to lean heavily on the S20R experts here, since I have limited skills (truthfully, ZERO) with regard to troubleshooting and/or restoring tube radios of this type.
I think I was about 12 years old when I first discovered that the "broken" old S20R in our basement just needed an antenna to pick up signals, when I touched a screwdriver to one of the antenna terminals and almost immediately heard the WWV buzzing/clicking format the predated the current tones.? I was hooked.
