Check for continuity between the two SO-239 connectors.? It should be
“zero ohms”.
?
The Bird 43 has “QC” (quick change) connectors.? If you remove the
four screws on each connector, they “un-plug”.
?
I suspect that your meter landed on one of the connectors, and the center
pin is not making contact.
?
When you remove a connector, you will find a Teflon disc with a small
socket.? The center pin on the QC connector mates with this socket.
?
If the QC connector is damaged, replacements are easy to find.

I forgot?to mention a lot of 150 mic amplifiers have had bypass capacitors placed on R141 and R145. This does increase?the audio drive but it also boosts the high frequency response. Those two resistors were purposely left un-bypassed to reduce the high frequency
response.
Also, The EV-630 is a good mic for the 150. If it sounds tinny then most likely L14 and L15 need adjustment.

This opens a real can of?worms.?
FIRST: There is an ongoing war between the technical purists and the folk-legends on the use of the D-104 on the SR series transceivers.
The audio response bandwidth is specked at 600Hz to 2800HZ
The D-104?
As you can see there is about 12-14 db difference between 600Hz and 2800Hz. There is also a tremendous?amount of energy above 2800Hz that is overdriving the sideband filter.
SECOND:
It is relatively easy to test the response of the 150.?
-LSB, RF LEVEL minimum, MIC GAIN at 50 to 60%, any band, attach scope to output of FL1, key transmitter? (ground pin 2 of mic connector.
-inject 0.005vrms into pin 1 of the mic connector. If L14 and L15 are aligned properly and FL1 is functional you should get a flat response from approximately 650HZ to 2700HZ with about a 3 db roll off at each end.?

Yes, I read it to the end. I have not had the opportunity?to run an HT-40 with an SX-140 so I could not offer suggestions in that area. I have however listened to a lot of people running D104's on "H" gear. The echos and ringing are not pleasant, so I offered

Re: New to group. HT-40 & SX-140

The D104's boosted high frequency output is, arguably, not too much of a problem on the HT-40. However on the SSB rigs it will create havoc. The audio band pass on SSB on the "H" rigs is listed 500Hz - 2700Hz or 500Hz - 3200Hz. In these rigs the D104 will over
drive the sideband filters and cause splatter outside the desired bandwidth.
I have not tested the HT-40 with overdrive out side the normal audio bandwidth for AM emissions. If I get my hands on a 40 I'll have to test that and see what flows from the antenna jack.

I want to reinforce Walts statement.? If you like the sound of a D 104 bypass the internal amplifier.? Instructions for doing this are on the web.? Without the amo the D 104 is still one of the highest output mics ever on the market .? It should
not overdrive the rig but eill have plenty of output.
Note that the D 104 is designed for high intelligibility under noisy conditions .? It boosts the highes and rolls off the.lows.? I have always found them tinny sounding.
Fwiw the D 204 was the fir D t crystal mic on the market (c 1933) early on there were a couple of versions including one with flat response. Crystal mics and phonograph pickups were popular at a time when electronic amplification was expensive,?
the high output could save a stage if amplification.? Unfortunately crystals are vulnerable to moderate heat (a hot day),? humidity? and mechanic as l shock.?

Great find. You may want?to rethink the choice of microphones. Like most all of the Hallicrafters of the 50's, 60's and 70's the HT-40 was designed?to function with a dynamic microphone. Over driving the audio ckts will cause spurs and garbled audio.

Hello everyone. I have been gifted with a HT-40 & SX-140 in relatively good shape. The tubes check ok at the moment. I am getting about 45 watts on 40M so that seems OK. I am planning on using an amplified D-104 and make an attempt at a AM contact. I have
a T/R relay in operation being controlled by the TX and that works well. I am learning how to use the RX which is a bit different. Licensed in 1977 my first rig was a HW-101 so no split operation experience from that era. Also gifted was a Drake 2-NT & 2B
(which has been replaced by a 2C). A HA-5 VFO is here also to use on either rig. My initial question is how do I spot the TX & RX? I have not quite figured out how to do that yet.
