SX-17 "S" Meter Continues.................
It's DEAD. The "S" meter, sent to the doctor for emergency surgery did
not survive the operation. I was told it was DOA. I am in mourning.
But I have leads on replacement meters, still alive and

BTW, I have determined the "S" meter in the SX-17 is/was also used in the
SX-16 and SX-18. So, if anyone has one of those available, I will take it.

Bristol wrenches
Thanks to all who told me about the Bristol wrenches. I got a set and they
worked beautifully. I have all the knobs off the radio and am ready to start
work on the inside now.

Re: S-85 Modification
I just did a little more research, the QF-1 operating range is: 450-
460 KHz.
The S-85's IF is 455khz.
So, there is your answer. The QF-1 is/was used to sharpen the IF
frequency of the receiver.

Re: S-85 Modification
The QF-1 is a device known as a "Q Mulitiplier". Don't know much about
it but it is made to operate in the IF section of a receiver. Do a
google search on the QF-1. There are lots of references.

S-85 Modification
Hello All,
I just joined the group as I was given an old S-85 by a coworker. The
unit is in great shape and actually works fine with the exception of
Band 4. I was also given a Heathkit QF-1.

Those knobs probably use Bristol set screws. Wrench kits are available from
several sources. Bristols are different from Allen heads that are also used
in some sets the wrenches are not
