I just did a little more research, the QF-1 operating range is: 450- 460 KHz. The S-85's IF is 455khz. So, there is your answer. The QF-1 is/was used to sharpen the IF frequency of the receiver.

The QF-1 is a device known as a "Q Mulitiplier". Don't know much about it but it is made to operate in the IF section of a receiver. Do a google search on the QF-1. There are lots of references.
