Tom,

Welcome to the group and you have nice toys to play with. There are
many places where you can obtain replacement caps. One of the places
I like is:

www.tubesandmore.com

Good luck with the restoration.

For the sake of safety, I would definitely replace the old line cord with a three-wire cord. If you sell the radio someday, advertise it an an "upgrade", not a "modification". If the buyer is a so-called collector who is willing to pay more for a radio in original condition, charge an extra $100 and send the old cracked, frayed, dangerous line cord with the radio so he can reinstall it. :-)

Locked S-85 Power Cord replacement

David A Aitcheson

Greetings de Dave KB3EFS.

Group input requested please.

Among the Hallicrafter radios that I own is a S-85 that has the
original power cord still in use. It has aged, cracked in places, and
is in need of replacement. What I am wondering is should I stick with
a two wire cord (either polarized or non-polarized) or should I go all
out and upgrade to a three wire cord with the ground wire attached to
the chassis. I have no idea how this would impact the value (if any)
of the radio should I decide to sell it.

Thank You.

Thanks for your reply. Since you have a "few", and I have a couple
of hundred, it would be easier if you let me know what you have. I
think you get my meaning. Hi Hi.

Gentlemen,

Some of you may know that I have been actively collecting images
of the labels, tags or nameplates found on Hallicrafters equipment.
I estimate, in another 10 years, these labels especially the paper
ones, will be gone forever. I have images of Tube Layouts,
Manufacturer Model Identification labels, Serial # tags, etc.

I have a large library of this stuff and it is available in JPG
format to anyone who needs a specific labels or tag for a restoration
project. I also collected these seemingly innocuous pieces of
history just for histories sake for eventual placement on CD for
distribution.

Most of the images are not art ready. That is, they cannot be
printed directly to a printer for transfer to your restoration
project without editing or manipulation. What I have done in the
past with some restoration projects, was to print the picture of the
label and in a graphics program, make a new label or a reasonable
facsimile from the hard copy or if the image is close to perfection
(a lot of them are), size it and print it for direct application to
the project radio.

To make a long story short, if any of you have a radio or other
Hallicrafters product with labels still intact, could you please take
a digital image of them in high resolution mode and email same to me
for inclusion into the archive of labels. I have attached (2) images
for your curiosity to show you what I am saving or looking for.

Thanks,

K2WH

Very wrong. The S-120 is a tube receiver and the 120A is all solid
state so, they are not similar at all. The S-120 is a 4 tube
receiver and the S-120A is a 9 transistor receiver.

I would ask the Radio Reprint guy if he has the manuals for the S-
120A. Good luck with your search, I'm sure you will find one.

Locked Pictures on Main Page

Gentlemen,

I have literally hundreds of high quality images that I can showcase
on the front page of this site. However, I don't want to be hogging
all the glory here. If any of you have nice clear high quality
images of your station or your own equipment, send it to me at:

image and I will put it up for a 1 week period.

Please don't send images copied off the web. Lets make it a picture
of your own.

Locked S-5 Promotional Brouchure

I have just placed a PDF file in the "Files" section. It is an
original and very rare and fragile promotional brouchure touting the
technology of the New Super Skyrider S-5 receiver. I put the
original in a safe place after the scan.

Due to the fragility of the original, my novice attempt at scanning
(first time), and the odd size of the brochure, it may not be as good
a scan as you may like. But, it is a piece of Hallicrafters history
and may be the only one in existence since the S-5 was manufactured
in 1934. It is interesting reading.

Sorry for page (3) which is upside down and I couldn't get it right
side up. I will do better next time. Enjoy the publication.

Locked Tube testers

Hi Bill,
I use a Hickok 6000A dynamic mutual conductance tube tester and mostly rely on the tranconductance value the tester reads out. The 6000A manual gives the Gm values which in most cases agrees with the RCA manual. The 6000A does have a Red/Green on the scale but I use the Gm value and replace a tube when the Gm is below about 60% of the book value.

books/pamphlets page by page and combine them into PDF files which
will be available for download in the "Files" section.

Completion date? Its never complete!
