of these is superior to composition resistors. I have never found any authoritative source saying that composition resistors were superior in any way. Heat dissipation and lead size depend on the power dissipation of the resistor. If you have a problem with resistors running hot use larger resistors. Composition resistors will start drifting right away. The are never made in tolerances less than 5% because they can drift that much from the heat of soldering. Someplace like Mouser should be good for any type of film resistor but you will have to make your own list for most receivers. The handbook parts list is often a help. Haven't tried it yet other than for testing.? It works just fine.? I might like the "T2" adjustment process better since it's a "set and forget" method.
50W output is more than enough if the band is in good shape.? When more power is needed, the "Boomer" can be easily switched in! -- 73/Rick W4XA __________________________________ All posts are created using OpenSuSE Leap 15.5 x64 Linux |

Re: Hayseedhamfest and resistor source
Greetings All. I¡¯ve used Hayseed Hamfest for Halli capacitor kits with good results. However if you¡¯re looking for resistors try Antique Radio Supply a.k.a. Tubesandmore.com. They stock metallic film, carbon film as well as carbon composite. I¡¯ve used them many times for restoration parts and other hard-to-find hardware. Check them out¡

Re: Hayseedhamfest
He wanted to contact Hayseed directly to see if they sold resistors - thus the request for his email/phone no.
AFAIK, he only sells capacitor kits for vintage tube radios. I've bought replacement resistors from standard sources (Amazon, Ebay, etc).

Rick -? I detuned T2 to get the SSB power down to 50-60 watts to drive my pair of 3-500s (Tentec Centurion).? It sure would have been nice to have an ALC connection in the amp and HT-44 however.? With T2 detuned, I can still get nearly full output power (130-140 watts) on CW by just increasing the RF level control.? How's that attenuator working out for you?

appropriate. Two things about tube rigs: they are larger than solid state and often need a larger, i.e. more massive, soldering iron, and the voltages are higher. You need to be more aware of safety. While the danger of getting killed is often exaggerated the danger of getting a painful shock is quite real. If you can read fairly easily look at books from before the 1960s for general information on shop practice. The ARRL "Radio Amateur's Handbook" usually has a good section on this and there were many other handbooks aimed at hams. People did a lot more construction in the old days and the techniques needed for repair and restoration are about the same. Good luck with finding someone not too far away, can't help with that. past. I could not find any sign of an e-mail address. That is puzzling and not good. AFAIK they do not deal in resistors. You may have to make your own list but beware that the S-20R in the flesh may not be exactly as in the schematic. I had to replace several resistors in mine and replaced all the caps except for the mica caps. Hallicrafters did not use the best resistors available and the receivers are also getting very old, the last are about eighty years. I would go over all the resistors with a good ohm meter. Look for any which read higher than marked. Mostly you can read them in circuit. The read values should be equal or lower than marked since there may be other resistors in parallel with them, none should read higher than marked. Carbon comp resistors almost always go high. The caps are almost always all bad except for mica caps and some of those can be bad. My memory is that there is one low-inductance paper cap with woven flat leads. I have no idea who made these but a modern film capacitor will have better (lost a word I want but means unwanted) inductance properties than the specials did when new. Note also that Hallicrafters sometimes used resistors in parallel to get values they evidently could not get in a single resistor to keep production going. Lots of changes to get boxes out the back door. I think one or more of the antique radio suppliers sells kits of resistors but can't tell you exactly who. I should find out since there is no longer any walk in store in Los Angeles where this stuff is available. The restored S-20R will surprise you, its actually quite a good receiver. Caveat - The HS Hamfest cans DO NOT always align their bottom lugs like
the originals...? If the space is tight, it can be a royal PITA to "stretch" wires.? I gave up and redo my own... cut 'em open with a Dremel saw, carefully unwind the "rollup" cap material, and VERY carefully pry the soft aluminum section-straps from the foil... After matching your new caps to the old layout, use the barrel-crimp end of some crimp-on connectors (cut off the rest and discard)... crimp "half" the barrel on the aluminum strap (THIS gives you something to solder onto!!), match up the lead arrangement and length, and after they're together, using some REAL diuct tape (the FOIL type), put the top back on and you're done, save for resoldering.? Note:? Mark the halves before disassembly, so they fit well. Tom - W?E |
