Re: SR2000 initial power up

Well, my SX-117's original 16.000 MHz crystal was at 15.989420 MHz? on my crystal tester (2N3904 circuit).? While testing some of my other crystals, I found another labelled 16.000 which was at 15.994056 MHz.? Today, I put them both in the oven at temperatures varying between 260 and 400F (mostly around 350 F) for 3 hours.? Yep, the solder holding the case together seems to have melted on one of them.? I'm happy that both crystals still work.? I'm not so pleased with the improvement.? The original came up about 70 Hz.? The newly-found one came up about 200 Hz.? The newly-found one is now in the radio.? I'm able to trim it up to about 15.998.650 MHz and WWV comes in about where it should.
I'll check them again after a while to see if they reverted.
Cheers,
Halden VE7UTS

SR-46A on the Way

I have an SR-46A 6M transceiver on the way.? Seems the matching VFO is scarce as chicken-teeth so I'm looking for an alternative.? Any ideas?

SR2000 Can Cap

Is the SR2000 can cap an "FP" style twist lock?? ?It does not say in parts list.? Normally I just add a terminal strip but space is limited.

Right, the EIA date code was stamped on the chassis when it cleared the assembly area, no tubes, no front panel, no sub chassis. It could be months before a chassis became a fully tested unit and received its paper production serial number. In some cases, years.?

I have collected serial numbers and build dates for Hallicrafters receivers such as SX-76, SX-88, SX-96, SX-100, SX-101, and SX-122.

My overall evaluation indicates that there doesn’t appear to be any relationship between the rear chassis serial tag number (sometimes a stamped metal plate such as SX-88 or a printed paper tag) and the EIA manufacturing date. In many cases it is often a confusing mess within a specific model type (for example SX-100) and the various versions (Mark 1, 1A, 2, 2A, 2B).

Re: SR 2000 serial numbers

Hi C,
One of my HT-40's has "199052" stamped inside its chassis.? The paper label on the back has "52" as the first 2 numbers of the group.? Similarly, my SX-117 has "199416" stamped on the chassis and the 2nd group of its paper serial number starts with "416".? I concluded that the HT-40 was made in the last week of 1960 and the SX-117 in the 16th week of 1964.? The number on the chassis might indicate the week that the chassis was built or the week that assembly began.? The first digits in the serial number might indicate the week that the set was completed.? If this is the case, then your Radio 2 might have started production in the 20th week of 1967 and reached completion during the 25th week of 1968.? I guess a bunch of partly-built radios were set aside until the sales picked up or while some more urgent production was done.? I presume that Radio 1 doesn't have a paper serial number label on the back.
Maybe someone here has more definitive knowledge of when the chassis stamps were applied and will chime in.
Cheers,

Re: SR 2000 serial numbers

Any idea what the letter means?

Thank you for the info!

Re: SR 2000 serial numbers

Oops typing error. Code is 199XYZ with X the last number of year and YZ is the week.

Re: SR 2000 serial numbers

The EIA manufacturing date standard for Hallicrafters is 199XYX where 199 is Halicrafters company number, X is the last number in the year of manufacturer and XY is the week of the year. Dachis states the SR-2000 was made from 1965 to 1972. So both of your radios were made in 1967. Radio 1 was made the 24 week and Radio 2 was made the 20 week of 1967 or they were made 4 weeks apart.

Re: SR 150

?
I always wondered why there was no built-in side tone for CW in this rig.
?
Possible reasons:
Primarily intended for SSB use?
Primarily intended as a mobile rig?
Expected CW ops to be using the Halli paddle and keyer (with audio)?
?
Does anyone know?
?
I have an SR-150 in very nice cosmetic condition.? I haven't used it in a few years - but I have had it on the air.? I did a little CW with it - but that was rather difficult w/o a sidetone.? I'd like to get it on the air again one of these days.
?
Nice rig: looks good; very quiet receiver.

I would say you're right!?

A few of the reasons were that transceivers were generally used mobile, used primarily for SSB and any good Hallicrafters owner also owned a TO Keyer! (or maybe a Heathkit keyer!)

In the early 70's, when I first got the Novice license, my very first project was to build a tube type electronic keyer!? I used 2 old J-38? "hand" keys? (From Fair Radio Sales) bolted together side-by-side for a paddle. It worked great!

Today, I sometimes hear newer amateurs attempting to use a "Bug" but I almost NEVER hear anyone who can send readable CW with them.? They almost always have the "DIT's" set too fast for the sending speed and/or? the "DAH's" are far too short.......But as always, I digress!

I have a KWM-2A.? I would trade it for a nice SR-150!!? I am not impressed with Collins equipment at all.

I think The SR 150 tops the list of receivers. Note, a lot of people replace the FL1 and the carrier oscillator crystals in their?400's and 2000's with those from the SR-150.

Last summer I picked up a SR 150 and matching power supply/speaker. It was in the typical dirty scratched condition and didn't work. I wanted to say that Walt's repair manual was invaluable. I did the wash down with simple green rather than scrubbing bubbles because it was available. That worked very well followed by the garden hose and a few days in the summer sun. I sanded the case to bare metal and sprayed it with rustoleum hammered finish pewter. I recapped the supply and the electrolytic capacitors in the rig per Walt's doc. I followed the alignment tips and found that I needed to shift the USB carrier oscillator a bit to bring up the CW power levels. Thanks Walt, the tips in your manual are gold. I'm not sure if you were a technical writer or not, but I haven't seen better service docs. I still need to spend time on the vfo tracking across the dial but that can come later. I also added a side tone oscillator as I am primarily a CW op and prefer using a bug. I made up a little board with a couple relays, one to switch the grid block voltage and one to switch the audio output from my side tone oscillator. I now have 12 volts on the key instead of grid block voltage. This is all easily removable with no non reversible changes and I leave a printed note with the mod details inside the cabinet in a cool location behind the bottom cover. I am impressed with how stable the vfo is and the nice comfortable sound to the receiver in this model. The first contact was a nice chat with an op in France. Lots of fun!?

Re: SX100 DC power plug question

Thank you so much for the info. I will do just that and jumper it as suggested.
its been a very successful morning on the sx100. Did manage an alignment and things seem to be working well.?

now on to pull the face off and do the clean up and restore of it. Also will finish up the remaining bees on the front of the radio.?

It would be better to stick a jumper wire in the correct pins of the socket. That way if you run across a plug you can do it right.

If a DC power plug is not available for the back of one of the SX series radios, is it safe to bridge across the terminals inside the radio?
Think its pin 6 & 7 but dont remember for sure.?
Or a suggestion on where I may find one of these?
Imagine they may be getting difficult to locate.

Re: SX100 DC power plug question

Keith,
Cut a scrap of #12 wire and shove it in there for the short term.? Then, later, when you run across a relay or vacuum tube with octal plug, disassemble it and make the substitution.

I aligned mine the other day. I worked the Christmas Island DXpedition with my Yahoo ft 2000 on 10 CW and for grins decided to see if I could hear him on the SX-117. I did! Attached a short clip. So forge onward Floyd!
