Locked SX-17 Meter Damage

To all those who have provided leads for meter repair, I thank you. I am
following up on those leads.

To the others who posted and were probably shaking their respective heads in
disbelief that I was working on the SX-17 while powered up, I have this to
say.

First, if you are not familiar with the SX-17 chassis layout, other than the
"S" meter terminals, there are no other live terminals or exposed wiring
when working from the top of the chassis. So, I felt I was perfectly safe
with what I was doing. I also had the mind set that I am working on a tough
boat anchor with no real possibility of damaging anything. I mean after
all, this thing weighs about 50 lbs. This I admit proved to be wrong. The
one item that could be damaged was. Murphy is involved here.

Second, the steel cover that goes over the main tuning capacitor must be
removed to perform alignment and calibration. It allows access to the
trimmer pads. In order to check the effect of the alignment with the cover
on vs the cover off, I needed to have the receiver on and warm to avoid
initial drift from cold start. So, the rest is history. The end of the
shield cover hit the meter terminal and probably opened the coil. This "S"
meter is in the plate circuit of the meter tube. So, basically, I shorted
B+ to ground through the meter.

Live and learn, but I will repair this receiver, count on it.

Locked SX-17 Receiver, I'm Heart Broken.

开云体育

Well just as I was buttoning up my SX-17, new looking, aligned perfectly, tuned up and receiving fabulously, I accidentally touched the "S" meter terminal with the metal cover over the main tuning cap.

?

I BLEW OUT THE METER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? Can you hear me sobbing here as I write this?

?

Anyway, I am looking for a replacement meter.? It looks like the SX-16, SX-17 and SX-18 had the same meter.? Anyone got one?? Contact me off list at K2WH@.... ?The members of this list, as Hallicrafters enthusiasts, you really don't want to see this wonderful almost NEW IN THE BOX receiver have this gapping hole in the front panel.? Do you?? I didn't think so.? So, sell me a meter.

?

Thanks for listening.? Now I will go drown my sorrows.

saying a video will be upcoming for the SX-17. It will be the SX-17.
The one just uploaded is the SX-117.

Locked SX-117 Video in Files Section

I just uploaded a short grainy video of my almost complete SX-117.
Take a look at it if you feel like it. I'll leave it there for a
little while.

Locked SX-117 "S" Meter Circuit and Changing "S" Meter Indications with Selectivity

开云体育

The continuing story of the SX-117 "S" meter, and how it changes

with different selectivity settings.? This is why it changes.

?

I measured the AVC voltage on tube V7, pin # 1.? The following are

my findings with an "S5" received signal:

?

Selectivity Control???????? AVC Voltage on Pin # 1

?

5 khz??????????????????????? - 0.84 vdc

2.5 khz????????????????????? - 1.09 vdc

5.0 khz????????????????????? - 1.37 vdc

?

V7 is a 6DC6 tube and is used as a 1650 khz amplifier of which

the "S" meter is in the cathode circuit.

?

Tube V10b, is the 6BN8 tube or AVC rectifier which is connected

directly to the selectivity switch. ?The selectivity switch switches

in (2) different resistive values including (2) different capacitor

values in the 2nd IF circuit.? These (2) added components to the 2nd IF

circuit, provide the 2.5 and .5 receiver bandwidths.

?

The resistive values are also connected to the 6BN8 AVC rectifier cathode circuit and the 2nd IF, thereby loading or unloading the AVC line which explains the varying "S" meter readings when the selectivity Control is changed.? I hope I got that right.

Locked WW2LST Recording

I have uploaded a recording of the LST boat with the call WW2LST in
the "Files" section. It was received on a Hallicrafter SX-111. The
boat was off the coast of Georgia about 150 miles out to sea.

The recording is 5mb long so if you do not have broadband, it may take
a while to upload. I will leave the file for a while on the site.

Locked Re: New Link Added for Knobs

wow thanks for the link to mouser..they have quite a selection...the
pdf you downloaded does link to all the pages as well as the data
sheets. many thanks for the effort you are puting in to finding me
knobs.. i will be sure to post pix when the resto os complete

Locked New Link Added for Knobs

Along with the PDF file on Mouser Electronics, I have added to the
links section, Ocean State Electronics page about knobs.

While I have not purchased knobs for Hallicrafters here, I did purchase
a complete set of knobs for an old Swan 700cx that were very close to
original. My advice is to carefully measure your original knobs and
compare to the ones offered by Mouser or Ocean State.

Good luck.

Locked Apparently the entire Catalog is There

I just went to the Mouser files and at the top and bottom of each page,
you can click "Next" or "Back" and page through the catalog, maybe the
entire catalog. Interesting the way this stuff works even though I
uploaded just (2) pages

K2WH

Locked Mouser PDF Files - Knobs

I have added (2) PDF files in the "Files" section. These are the (2)
pages of knobs offered by Mouser. Some of the knobs look to be close
replacments for Hallicrafters, Swan and Hammarlund.

Locked Re: wanting sx 99 knobs

Try page 1235 and items 450-1170 and 450-1171. Both look close to the
Hallicrafters knobs on the SX-99

Locked Re: wanting sx 99 knobs

In addition, try this page in Mouser Electronics Catalog or website,
