HP produced videos 2
Mike, I believe that is the same HP training video that is presented John Higham. It is available on YouTube as a four part series titled "HP 8920A 8920B RF Communications Test Set - 1 of 4"

Adjustment of the power reading on the HP 8920A 12
Hello all, I have finally got my instrument going well, NO FAILURES :) The one thing left is to adjust the reading to agree with the value of watts at the rf input, measured with my Bird 43 watt meter. I presume the adjustment is in the "Configure" menu ... ? Can someone advise me as to the procedure to make the correction? 27.6 watts in @ 144 Mhz, reads about 21 on the screen. Regards Bill M. FM Tests
The automated test routines that you can run are useful. If you don't have the software, or you want to learn how to do it yourself, the standard "TIA 603-D-2010" will tell you more than you wanted to know. That document is difficult to obtain. Here is a simplified document that walks you through the tests. Harris makes this freely available, and even gives you a hard copy when you take the class.

HP8920a 11807A NA_FM Tests 2
I'm hoping someone with knowledge about using the 11807A NA_FM tests Option 001 card can provide some advice. Several of the TX tests; namely; Test 4 TX Modulation limiting, Test 5, TX Audio response and Test 6 TX Audio distortion all fail with a message "Deviation would not set to 3 kHz" Looking through lots of documentation I can't find any reference to this fault message. HP8920 displaying over 1.5 MW!!! 4
Hi all... This is a weird one... I have been servicing HP8920's / 8922's for years for a radio shop but this one is above all... HP8920, option 011... When connected to a 25W or less transmitter, the rf power display is excellent (particularly for a test set of this age!), but as soon as I use a radio above 25-30 watts, the display goes completely out of this world. Power levels of about 1500000 watts, 92 dBm, or 9000 rf volts!!! All scales seem to correlate with each other but with an incomprehensible +47 dB offset!!!! Suddenly, when RF drive rises from 25 watts to 30 watts, no glitch, no warning, from 30 to 1500000 watts! Outside of that offset, everything else is ok. Rock solid OCXO, generate levels, audio... Only this rf power offset!!! In [BLUE] [CONFIG], all rf offsets are at 0 dB. Has anyone ever seen such a behavior? One thing sure: HP engineers had real fun designing a radio comm test set able to display over 1 megawatt!!!! 73 de Normand VE2UM

8924C video out using a GBS-8200 to vga questions 22
Hi group, I want to replace the CRT monitor in my 8924 and bought a GBS-8200 board. Well I saw a picture where they plugged it into the green (Y) rca jack on the 8200 board and this worked to a degree but the display was black and white and the right hand side was cut off. I tried the vga/ega connector without a sync and nothing, reading another article and blog they used a lm1881 sync separator to extract the V and H syncs. So here are my questions 1. does the composite video on a HP 9824c have the Sync pulses in it? (The article was for a different HP analyzer) 2. The schematic shows the V and H sync pulses are already at the CRT monitor plug can I use these pulses? 3. it there any other way to connect or modify the board to make it work? It seems like a lot of the info was lost in the move from Yahoo to here like a lot of my other groups so I¡¯m getting bit and pieces. The reason I want to replace the crt monitor is because it has a lot of burn in on the screen and it is only time before I have problems with it. Plus LCD screens are easier to read on my old eyes. thanks, Bill N7OQ

FS: Flash card w/HP tools & SRAM card 2
These are duplicates that I don't need. I haven't tried every one of the programs in my HP8920B, but the ones that I did seem to work fine. It looks like the EDACS tools also does conventional channels. NOT FOR HP8920A - DIFFERENT TYPE OF CARDS. The Flash card is a SMART 4 MB that contains these HP tools: HP 11807: Opt 001 - NA FM Tools, Opt 003 - AM Tools, Opt 011 - EDACS Tools, Opt 100 - RF Tools The card is formatted to about 2MB, as when formatted to 4 MB, my HP8920B didn't recognize it. If I remember, years ago when this was hosted on Yahoo, someone posted a few minor mods to make some of these programs work on the HP8924. That's for you to figure out. The SRAM card is a SMART 256KB with internal rechargeable battery. Not sure how long it will hold a charge, as it is used. Stick it in your HP to charge it once in a while. An SRAM card is useful to store your programs and data. You can't (easily) write to the Flash card. $50 for both cards, including USPS Priority Mail shipping. Not sure how messaging works on here, but my gmail address is mojoehand.

IBasic programming
Happy Holidays to all group members I am a proud new owner of an HP8920A. My main use will be for various amateur radio applications. I have been reading as much documentation as I can find on the internet. I am amazed by the capabilities of this instrument. The IBasic compiler offers some intriguing and creative possibilities. Has anyone developed useful IBasic programs for the 8920A?

HP8920a PLL 1GHz out of lock; it's a problem of the divider by 50
Hi , I have a spectrum analyzer HP8920a and during the self test RF DIAG I have the message "VCO 1Ghz Not locked". I checked at the board A15 and I have made some measurements. The output of the divider by 50 (signal 10_PLL10 pin 11 U10 and pin2 U27) is not working; there is no signal. At the entry of the divider by 50 the 500MHz signal is correct. The problem is the schematic in the user manual is different from the board. In the user manual the divider uses U27 MC1201 and U18 MC1038, and on the board there are U27 74AC191 and U18 "1820 8762". I try to find some datasheet about this circuit 1820 8762 I don't find anything on the web. For the 74AC191 no problem; I have the datasheet. To test the board I just put the power supply voltages +12V, -12V, +5V on the P2. In that manner it's possible to easily test the board A15. So my PLL is out of lock because it's missing the signal "10_PLL10" pin 11 of U10. Has anyone ever encountered this problem? If someone has the datasheet of U18 "1820 8762" and the schematic of this divider by 50, it would be nice. Thank you for your help. F4EYM.

8921A PCBs required
Hi James, Lots of clever things in these instruments. One I found very useful in fault finding is the TEST Button. That opens a screen to select the ROM part of the memory where the test programs reside. There are the choices of AF-Diag RF-diag MS-diag. Once you have selected which type of diagnostic test you wish the run, use the control knob to select, Cursor Up / Down, and Select, to select the test required. Then move the cursor to Run, which actually loads the little program in the unit, from that you cursor down to select which test to run. Push the control knob to make the test start. If you select the "All test", it will run all the list one after the other until it gets to the end, where you should see "NO Failures". Do each test either one at a time or step by step until you get no failures. Carefully read the screen and follow any setup instructions like connecting the Audio out at the back to the Audio in at the front, etc. You cannot destroy any data, so don't be worried about that. Play with these tests and try each choice; some allow you to do step by step and to pause on error. This is great for locating the section that has a problem. Make sure you exit the tests and return to main screen before you turn off the power. I make notes so if I get interrupted (by the missus or the phone), I can get back to where I left off. I think the Spec Analyzer is one of the plug in modules at the back near the power supply. Check if you have any OOL leds on (Out of Lock) that are in those modules. That could be a clue as to where the problem is. Be very careful in plugging in the boards and modules. It can be easy to bend the pins on the mother board. Have fun James. Bill M.

Hi Bill, Thanks for reply. I didn't change that battery and I measured it and it was 2.9 V. It's very weird that everything goes normal except Spec Ana. That error message only pops out when accessing the Spec Ana. Regards, James

Agilent 8920b non-recoverable error 56 #hp8920b
Hello! Was hoping to get some assistance, I've been using this machine a lot a few years ago, I move and haven't set it up in a while, and now I get a non-recoverable firmware error: '$Header: tstScrUtil.c,v 22.11 96/10/01 20:51:43 hmgr Exp $' at line number 263 I was hoping maybe it just needs a firmware reflash but I haven't been able to find the files or a spare firmware upgrade card, idk much about the unit itself other than it worked and did what I needed it to do with tuning radios I had been working on. Thanks! ~Nate
