Switched attenuator issue
3
I've noticed excessive through attenuation with my HP attenuator set (8497K / 8494H). The repeatability was out of spec. After switching there would be a difference of 0.1 to 0.2dB. I tried IPA on the RF relay switch contacts with no effect. I was hesitant to try anything more aggressive but with little to loose I applied Deoxit Gold ... and it fixed the problem completely. The spec for through attenuation is 0.4dB + 0.09dB/GHz & 0.6dB + 0.09 dB/GHz. The repeatability is now much better than spec. (I'd already replaced the o-rings)

HP 5245L counting/gate problems
9
I have several of the HP 5245L counters and until recently, had at least one working. Now it seems that the last “working” counter I own has gone belly up. Two of them have the same problem, (the gate indicator isn’t flashing and one of the two isn't counting). I have the manual and it gives some trouble shooting points to check but in some cases, it only states there is a problem with a board instead of providing a list of components that could be faulty. This appears to be a common problem, at least with two of mine. It may be common enough for one of you experts to have fixed it and remembers what component failed. If so, I would greatly appreciate some help. Tom. N5AMA

3457A calibration data dump / restore
3
Hello, I have a very nice 3457A which has a 40-year old battery. New batteries are quite inexpensive and easy to find, but I'm quite scared at the prospect of replacing the battery without first dumping the calibration data to a file, and having a way of reloading it if anything goes wrong during the replacement process. Someone already tackled the problem of storing the cal data on a PC (https://github.com/Niravk1997/HP3457A-Calibration-Dump-Utility-for-AR488-GPIB-Adapter) but I couldn't find anything about how to restore the data from the PC to the 3457A if the data is lost. Right now my 3457A is sitting there with a battery which is 40 years old, and counting ... Any help or pointer(s) would be sincerely appreciated ! Joel

8656B HPIB connector
5
Hi all, working on my 8656B sig gen, and managed to break the IDC Centronics connector , so the cable is no longer attached. Is there a suitable replacement available taht is not too ex[ensive. Have to replace teh mains socket as smoke came out, still waiting on that, and it cost over $86Aus from RS on its own.I don't want to spend more than the device is worth to fix it, not that I am likely to use this port Wayne VK2WDE

Looking for info on HP 10534C RF mixer component
7
Does anyone happen to have specs on this little mixer from the 1970s? It was used in the HP8552A IF section. I have a bunch, and may be able to use them in a project, but it would be nice to have specs. All I know now is the pinout and an example application as in the 8552A. Ed

Shipping overseas?
27
HP list, I have attempted to assist a current HP list member in Germany with boards from a 8660C. The Post Office is telling me they cannot ship electronics to Germany. (From the US). Parts, vintage, boards, doesn’t matter. Do I have the customs form filled out wrong? Anybody have a explanation or know how to get this done? I did try UPS, they quoted a price which is a significant percentage of my monthly income. Thanks for any ideas, explanation, Gary WA2OMY

HP 8568B Instr Check Light?

Looking to purchase one. It shows no display on the screen which I can deal with, but I can't seem to find in the manual anything about the bottom Instr Check lights. The left one stays on. Any knowledge about what causes this? Thank you, Scott

SMD S461, L266 on DC-DC converter - HP 02463-80901 ; what are these devices for?
HP 4263B LCR meter. It worked wonderfully for the past few years until last month when a total blank of display at turned on. Later on it had been turned on once again with correct measurements but one of the red LED 5V was lit. Now it was totally dead. I suspected that the Japanese made DC-DC converter 02463-80901 was the culprit since no output can be measured from this unit. There are two surface mount devices marked as S461 and L266; four legs components with plus on two pins. I had never seen any SMD like these. Are they diode or a twin capacitors? S461 was connected in parallel so it might more likely to be capacitor? Basically my problem of 4263B was exactly as the same as the following post: blown L266 with evaporaied carbon deposite? https://xdevs.com/pow/hp4263b_dcdc_pow/ Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you! Yeun-Jung Wu

48-440 Hz AC power compatibility option (HP 8660B OPT 003) - acoustic noise (hum/buzz) from the unit?
6
My HP 8660B (subject of the instability issue now resolved) includes option 003 which is compatibility with 48-440 Hz power sources. The HP 8660B has a linear power supply (ca. 1970s, predates switchers), presumably to improve the ability of the unit to serve as ballast on a large ocean-going vessel, among it's other capabilities.) Question is this - the machine emits an acoustic (audible) noise after being on for a few minutes. I didn't pay attention to this before, but realized that the noise may be associated with the wide-range AC mains frequency compatibility - I figured it was just plates in the power transformer rattling. In my (now obsolete) work life (mostly in cable tv engineering), "ferroresonant" power transformers (used to adapt 60 Hz local mains power to the 60-90 Hz pseudo-sinewave power used in the cable tv hardline infrastructure to deliver power to inline amplifiers), the noise was similar. Does this (acoustic) noise ring a bell with anyone? Should I be concerned? The machine doesn't appear to exhibit any operating problems related to this (and I doubt has anything to do with the now-mitigated PLL issue). Thanks Dave

Manual for HP 466A amplifier
14
If anyone has a copy of the manual for this old amplifier I'd appreciate a copy. Even just the schematic diagram would be appreciated. I have had this amplifier for years and use it once in a while. There's a DC offset on the output now but appears to have low distortion. Ran on mercury batteries. Now the battery contacts are all corroded so I just connect a power supply to the test sockets. Has germanium transistors and I think it is '60's vintage. 10 Hz to 1 MHz is its frequency range and has 20 dB and 40 dB selectable gains. I did check the files. Thanks! Pete

HP 54512B (pair) repair
50
Hi all, Over the weekend I've got a couple of 54512Bs at my desk to seek to bring back to full functionality. My main scope is a 54522A, and I assume they have some commonalities, but I've yet to open mine (it came to me fully refurbished and never needed to open the case). I'm not very familiar with this other series, and hope on some good input and recommendations. The documentation is not as good as others I've seen from HP. Specifically for this unit (54512B), Keysight only seems to have a very skinny (by HP standards) Service Manual which can't honestly be called "module-level Service Manual," as it doesn't really into much detail on the different modules. Then there's a "Front Panel Reference," which is an odd other way of naming what I think is the Operating Manual. A couple other manuals have to do with programming. That's it. Sometimes in a series you have to look for the main unit, but in this case I'm not sure that's the 54501A, as the catalog spec sheet seems to suggest, or the 54505B, as per the SM. Maybe someone very familiar with the series would know. Artek doesn't have manuals for the 54512B at all, but they do for the 54501A, and if applicable, I'd get the series of six manuals they sell as a bundle. If no go, I'll be a bit in a bind with fixing this given what I have at hand. I am aware HP was not longer offering component SMs by this point, though I don't know for a fact on this specific series and scope (but I do regarding the better?/later? 54522A). Is this really capable of FFT to 500MHz, even if the scope is rated to 300MHz? I can't make sense of that. Now, on to the specific issues with the units. Unit #1 (S/N: 3214A00705) Upon starting it, it reports something like "TRYING TO START REALTIME CLOCK," which is unsuccessful after a time countdown from I think 60: "REALTIME CLOCK FAILED TO START - DISABLED." Once I get it to display the default screen and output a trace, it stated "Default cal loaded. Re-cal instrument." Self Test passes all. I'm also seeing a solid and apparently accurate 5V from the DC Cal output in the back. I haven't tried the AC Cal output. Note this one had the Cal switch in the back in the UNPROTECTED position when I got it. I'm able to display the square wave test signal from the front panel. Unit #2 (S/N: 3214A00704: consecutive units!) Upon staring it, it stated "CALIBRATION FACTOR CHECKSUM ERROR. MOVE REAR PANEL CAL SWITCH TO UNPROTECTED. POWER INSTRUMENT OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN. RE-CAL INSTRUMENT." It also says "Trying to start realtime clock (09290)." Maybe that's an error code? Upon switching the rear Cal switch to UNPROTECTED, it boots successfully, goes to a default measurement screen, but gives me a warning "Failed interpolar cal." The trace seems to jump around on Y a bit. Self Test passes all but Timebase. It also displays the same error as default screen ("Failed interpolar cal"). 5V out at DC Cal is good. This one had the Cal switch in UNPROTECTED position, so maybe that's why it booted successfully. I'm able to display the square wave test signal from the front panel, though it seems to be offset vertically a bit. To me, this seems to tell me the battery holding the cal constants is done - going by what I know about my 54522A. It's also possible some Dallas RAMs are out of battery - though I don't know if this uses those for non-volatile memory. I have not yet opened the units, so I've no idea where the rails are, if any caps have leaked, etc. But maybe the information above gives some clues on what's going on, enough to start thinking on it. It also seems the issues are shared very similarly, so maybe that's making the repair more streamlined. Looking forward to your input. Thank you, Radu.

3708A Noise and Interference Test Set - Looking for a Service Manual
4
Hi, I just pulled my 3708A off the shelf for a bit of a spit polish ready to sell it off and I'm looking for a service manual for the performance test and calibration procedures. I can't seem to find anything but the Operating Manual in the usual places. Does anyone have a digital copy of the service manual for this instrument? Thanks! Jared
