E4406A GPIB errors with KE5FX utilities

If I fire up my E4406A and issue an SCPI control string to it, then capture a spectrum and request a GIF grab using PSAPLOT, it works fine the first time.? Subsequent use of the same command result in a read error 0x2.? I can't find any commands which will reset the thing.? If I power-cycle the 4406 and run the SCPI config string again (or set it up manually), the same thing happens, first read to GIF is fine, subsequent ones fail.? Using a Prologix USB GPIB interface v6.4.1 with driver v6.107.? It works fine with all my other GPIB instruments.? I have now isolated the 4406 so it is the only device on the GPIB. No change.

SATRACE and SSM also fail with the 4406, either locking up or reporting an 0x2 read error.

Any suggestions of what to look for, any diagnostics to try, or if the E4406A needs any special config settings in PROLOGIX.EXE?? The backlights have failed, so seeing what is on the display is challenging, and I certainly can't just take a snap of the screen.

Hi, Neal --

?

I haven't heard any other reports of this behavior.? I just tried running psaplot with a Prologix adapter, and it appears that repetitive screenshot captures work OK here:

It looks like you have an older E4406A, or at least an older firmware version, so maybe there's a timing issue of some kind.? Does the problem still happen if you don't send any strings to the analyzer prior to running psaplot?

?

There are no special options required, other than using the -scpi option with SSM, but one suggestion might be to hit the 'Edit CONNECT.INI' button in the GPIB configurator and play with the write_delay_ms and reset_to_local settings.?

?

That being said... if your E4406A has an Ethernet jack, I'd strongly recommend using that instead of GPIB.? The connection will be much faster.? SSM will run at 20-30 FPS or more, for instance.?

Thanks John, the same thing happens even if I don't send any config strings.? I suspect it might be a timing issue, but I'm pulling the thing out of the rack to connect the ethernet port.? Whose silly idea was it to install three 42U racks in my study without any rear access, then fill them with big heavy lumps of testgear?? Maybe I just a firmware update.? Let's see how I get on with the ethernet connection though.? I wish I'd thought ahead and fitted a patch cable BEFORE slamming it all in the rack.

It'll be worth it, trust me. :) ?

Once it has acquired a DHCP lease or otherwise has a valid IP address, check to make sure the SCPI port is set to 5025 (you can leave Telnet at 5023) and use 'Edit CONNECT.INI' to specify the same IP address in the interface_settings line, e.g. 192.168.1.100:5025 .? Before saving the file, set is_Prologix to 0, and that should do the trick.? The GPIB address is not used with the utilities when it's set up this way, so you can just use 1 everywhere.

Well this is interesting.? Exactly the same outcome as GPIB when I use ethernet with psaplot.? Also ssm still fails.? Time to get a firmware update done I guess.

Hmm, sounds like it.? If upgrading the firmware takes care of the problem, let me know and I'll add an FAQ entry.?

I finally got round to fitting an external VGA screen to the E4406A. Nice little 7 inch cheapie from ebay.

Also found an old Win7 laptop on ebay, loaded the XP emulator from Microsoft along with Virtual PC, and set the networking to use the physical card.? All worked fine, the update went smoothly and SSM and PN talk to the 4406 perfectly using SCPI over ethernet.

Current firmware is A.10.08, 20070628

Thanks to Tim, John, Hardy, Dave, Kuba and Tony for advice.

Now I need to get on with actually MEASURING some stuff.
