Thanks John, the same thing happens even if I don't send any
config strings.? I suspect it might be a timing issue, but I'm
pulling the thing out of the rack to connect the ethernet port.?
Whose silly idea was it to install three 42U racks in my study
without any rear access, then fill them with big heavy lumps of
testgear?? Maybe I just a firmware update.? Let's see how I get on
with the ethernet connection though.? I wish I'd thought ahead and
fitted a patch cable BEFORE slamming it all in the rack.

If I fire up
my E4406A and issue an SCPI control string to it, then
capture a spectrum and request a GIF grab using PSAPLOT, it
works fine the first time.? Subsequent use of the same
command result in a read error 0x2...
