Re: HP 60’s Front Panel Color
Hi Folks, ? ?I'd like to revive this thread for an unrelated topic.? We're paining the interior of our house with "Pale Oak" from Benjamin Moore.? ?I was wondering if there is a way to match the color of the wall paint with an ENAMEL solvent based spray paint so I can use it on light switch covers and air intake vents.? ?Then on further thought, it would sure be useful to match the "HP gray" or "Tektronix Blue" (So I am cross-posting to that group), or Logan lathe grey, or any one of a thousand other hobby needs. ? I did find this this morning: ww.myperfectcolor.com/Custom-Color-Spray-Paint/33865.htm ? I have no affiliation with that company, nor have I tried it, but I was wondering if anyone here has, and figured I would share the link if not.? ?It appears from the description on the web site that they will match paints from major manufacturers.? That means to me that you can go to your favorite paint dealer, collect a bunch of sample swaths, and match those against your instrument's front panel, and just order by the paint code.? You don't have to cut a piece of your front panel off and mail it in!? ?It's not cheap - $47.99 for a single can, $25.99 each for two and dropping from there, but typically we only need a few cans, so it's steep.?? ? For truly custom colors it looks like they will match for a fee.
? Anyone try any similar such services?

?
Hi, I'm not sure there is an exact match in the RAL pallet. The nearest I have found for instruments of that vintage is RAL7042. That looks ok for panels that I wanted to 'tone in' with the HP equipment but it is probably not close enough to invisibly touch-up parts of an existing original panel. I have not explored it yet, but I gather there are now companies around who will colour (or color!) match from a sample and then mix an exact match for you. Some will do this in modest volume and for a reasonable cost, or so I am told!

3586B Selective Voltmeter Help trouble shooting
I bought an HP3596B off EBay. ?I have a service manual on order. ?First thing I did was remove the leaky battery and thoroughly clean the PS board. It looks good, however if I look down to the edge connector inside the unit I can see it has the blue buildup on it from the battery leak. I'll save that until I disassemble to clean and lube the switches. ?At power up the self calibration comes back with CE-F. One poster suggested I put in? Recall, Decimal point, Center Frequency ,8, when I do it comes back with Fail? 1? 0. ?Anyone have info on what the error codes denote? ????????????????????????????????????? Thanks, Lamont

Yes, I found it very impressive. The phase lock loop design(20/30, M/N and YTO loops combo) is shared by 8340/41, 8566, 8672 and possibly other sweepers and SAs too. Learned a lot by studying the service manuals:)

Tobias,
Look at page 9-49 in the 8568 service manual (Vol. 4). The section is called "RF Section Analog Troubleshooting".
The problem you describe does not seem to me like it's YTO related. It sounds more like spinning? the rotary pulse generator somehow corrupts the tuning ramp.

I have had a UPS store pack for me only once; the store, in suburban Minneapolis, did an excellent job with a large tube-type oscilloscope, getting it to me undamaged. Packaging and shipping to the west coast was ~$100 so definitely not cheap.

Hi Dave
As far as I have learned, most HP YIGs are pretty similar.
Have a look at the picture here

Calvin,
does that mean the YTO is unlocked during the sweep?

On my 8566b, if the span is greater than certain MHz, the sweep source is operate in “Lock and Roll” mode - locks to the sweep start frequency then applies a ramp to roll.
Calvin
?
I don't know about the screen flickering, but I do think the YTO loop behavior is normal. At wider spans it is not constantly phase-locked - it is driven open-loop with fairly accurate sweep current, and I think possibly re-phase-locked just at the beginning
of the sweep each time around. For wide spans, you can't resolve the small frequency error on-screen anyway, but for narrow ones, more stability is needed, so the LO is locked. It's also possible that the narrow spans instead fix the first LO and use the second
LO for sweeping - I can't recall for sure, but it should be one of those two schemes.
Definitely get the manual if you haven't already.

Hi,
I have the manual, of course :-)
But I cannot find some info about when the YTO is allowed to be unlocked.
I also have not yet managed to fix the flickering trace. Actually, 'flickering' ist not quite the right expression; it is a bit more complicated: if there is a signal on the screen and the marker is moved along the trace, the trace is slightly 'pulled'
along the frequency axis towards the direction in which the marker is moved, which looks like an unstable, flickering display if the marker is moved fast (e.g. when turning the knob rapidly). As soon as marker movement is stopped, the trace bumps back at its
former position.
However, this absolutely strange behaviour can only be observed when the span is wider than 1 MHz; in this case also the YTO unlock LED is flashing (but no warning message on the screen).
I hope I have some time tomorrow to check the tant caps. I hope it is not the YTO or a mixer which went on the blink, but I guess as long as the YTO oscillates and signals can be viewed correctly (in principle) on the screen, then the RF path seems to
be all good.

I am sorry, but just saying ..."poor or lazy reporting"... is only sugar coating the facts.
The fact is, the reporter did not confirm his story, so in fact, he (she or it) made up
some of the alleged facts.
If you make up facts, that to me, is FAKE.

Sort of:
"For shipping, we work with a local UPS franchise. They will pickup
your items the week following the sale and contact you directly to
discuss shipping options and costs, and then you will pay them
directly."
My experience is that UPS store packing is very expensive, but also
completely ineffective at protecting the contents :(
Highly disrecommended.

Hello--
I'm offering the following HP small (palmtop) computers and accessories.
One HP Jornada 720 with one expansion base: Includes stylus and original
battery (needs replacement). This unit boots when connected to an
external power source.
Two HP Jornadas 820 (F1260A): both include original batteries: one has
a broken right-side screen hinge, the other is mechanically intact.
Both units boot when
connected to an external power source.
One HP 820 sync cable (untested).
One HP F1265 AC adaptor (12 VDC @ 3.5A) in working order (supplies
power to HP720 and HP 820.
One 16 MB Compact Flash card with HP 820 user's manual and
other files.
I'm asking $25.00 for the lot of all items, which includes USPS
Priority-mail
shipment (a $13.60 "value") for shipment to U.S. locations.
(These palmtops may have had test-and-measurement
applications, but it's unlikely. I apologize in advance to anyone who
takes umbrage at my offering these little jewels to the group.)
Question welcomed, PayPal honored.
