VTAM and TSO comes up, but no logon prompt

I got my latest goodie Z Prom Da The archive;? and I can bring up the system but I get no console and no 3270 connection.?
Please excuse my misspelling but I hope you get the clue. I even started to suspect not having logmode was the cause;
but after concatenating my old sys1.vtamlib I still don't have any 3270 connections.

Re: Can I access PC files from MVS?

The easiest way of all is to use the File Transfer option on 3270, BTW, you have to be in tso to transfer the files one by one.? Under Files menu option you will find File Transfer option.? The top line is for the PC side and the second box is for MVS side.? we use ASCII for text tranfer and Binary for Load modules and zip files. ??

Re: Can I access PC files from MVS?

Hi Jim,

Sort of.? If you get creative!? But not actually directly, that I know of.

One way is to use OMA tape.? You list the file names in a control file, and then make MVS think it is reading a tape containing the files.? Zipped PC files are valid files, and they can be unzipped on MVS, using an automated process.

Another way is to pull them in via the card reader.? If the records are longer than 80 bytes, then they can be converted to hex records of 80 bytes wide and reconstructed on MVS.

The above 2 methods were used to create the MVS/380 distribution.? There should also be working examples of the above in the MVS/380 distribution.? For more information on the above, please join us at:?/g/hercules-os380/topics.

Best regards,

You can transfer ASCII files (PC) both ways but using all the terminal x3279 progs I know that is all you can do but there again why would you when you can just open up another Window in the micro.

Re: Raspberry Pi4 Kit

Along those lines, Wisconsin DOT, when I joined them in 1975, had

360/65 Multi-Processor (MP)
2MB (I think it was 750K IBM core, 1.25MB Itel Core, but might have been the other way around)
2 Banks of 2314's (at least)
2 Banks of Memorex 3330-I equivalent "washing machines" (about 20 of them, total)
[Some photos show many more banks of 2314's - before the 3330 type drives arrived.]
Lots of tape drives - about a dozen - initially 2401's, then upgraded to 3402's/
2 2540 card readers
2 or 3 1403 N1 Printers
2 3705 communication controllers
Two calcomp plotters: one flat-bed and one large-ish drum plotter.
Took what would now be three rooms.

Photos available at:

(Long before I arrived, they had had a a couple of IBM 360/50's, and at least one datacell.)

So slower CPU, more LCS memory and more disk in lieu of the drum and datacell.? The rest comes out in the wash.? :-)

Of course, the lack of virtual memory was major downer on all of those.

Re: Raspberry Pi4 Kit

I purchased a Pi 4 B with 4GB of memory.? I downloaded the pre-built TK4- (which included Hercules 4.00) and X3270.? When I started it up, I was impressed with response times from the MVS.? Not as fast as on a desktop PC but faster then I thought it would be.? By the way, I am using the Raspian OS, the "official" OS for Pi.? They have an amazing library of ready to install software.? The whole install process was less than 15 minutes using all prebuilts.

Sorry for the inexactness of my question. And I'm an assembler programmer!
RasPi 4B with 8Gb memory.
I'm running Manjaro Linux - an Arch Linux derivative.
Which version of Hercules/Hyperion? The latest and greatest I can compile.

MVS/SP Init and Tuniing manual available

Manual GC28-1029-4, "OS/VS2 MVS System Programming Library: Initialization and Tuning Guide" is available for purchase at the Centre for Computing History, online at .? This manual is actually for MVS/SP (it's dated 1985), so it's not an exact match for the publicly-available MVS 3.8, but it's pretty close.

The museum has a large collection of manuals.? Their normal icon-based shopping site seemed to inefficient for me so Katrina was able to produce a list of the manuals that have already been scanned and are available for purchase at: .

I have yet to find a copy of GC28-0681, the Init. and Tuning manual for MVS 3.8.? If anyone has a line on one of these, please let me know.

Thanks!
