Re: Question about Member Notices - Note to Member

Sarah,

Would I maybe use this to be sent to a list if I maybe need to warn
them of something let's say to say any more actions like the ones by
our members and this list will be in moderation?
It isn't really designed for sending to the entire membership. The idea is that you'd checkmark one or a few members (in the Members list) then in the Actions menu at the bottom of the page use Send Message.

But maybe there's a suggestion for beta@ - when used by a moderator the New Topic composition page could have the drop-list for Member Notice selection in addition to the special notice checkbox.

That would be useful for notices that don't make sense to schedule but are needed on occasion.

Ken,

Thanks for that analysis!

When we hang around with progressive listowners all the time, it's easy to start to think that everyone thinks like us.?

But like you said, some owners use the discussion group as a "slow-paced chat group"? :-) , or even as a cloud-based distribution list.? They don't really care about features or reliability.

Interesting analysis. As you may have read, I was badly burned last week for trying to "help" a Y group move to who had no interest in doing that. ;p

Re: new member

Win,

At the moment we both show as Owner. How do I change her status to
Member?
Click onto the Members list (drop down the Admin menu in the left column). Above the list is a button to select "Members", "Moderators", "Pending Approval", "Bouncing" or "Banned". You can use either Members or Moderators, but the latter will be a shorter list (presumably!) making it easy to find her.

Click on her row, anywhere except on the checkbox. That will open up her membership page. Find the Role drop-list, and change he setting to "Member". Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

I love that idea.?If ?this is not possible, I would leave a message in the beta group. Good idea there.

I don't use the chat, I have it disabled for my group, however ?I like the idea and would also love to know if this is possible, or doable if I ?start the chat back up on the list at some point.

Take care all

Thanks Shal for your very clear instructions, both tasks completed.
One more question... I have taken over this group from the previous owner (at her suggestion) but she wants to remain a member. At the moment we both show as Owner. How do I change her status to Member?

You're welcome. You're posterid #566,976 at Groups.io.

An unimportant number, I think, but it does indicate how much Groups.io
has grown recently. Not that long ago new subscribers had numbers in the
100,000 range.

Nope.

Go to your Group's Settings page, Member Notices tab, and if there isn't
already a notice of type "Pending Subscription" click on the blue "New
Notice" button (at the bottom of the list) and create one with "Pending
Subscription as its Notice Type.

Be sure to check the "Active Message" box so that this message will be
sent automatically when someone applies to join your group. When you
finish composing the message body, click the blue "Add Notice" button at
the bottom to save it.

"Topics" is the default view, but the leftmost blue button above the
list of messages is a view selector. Other choices are "Messages" (the
view you're looking for, I think), "Expanded", and "Polls".

Hi,
I¡¯ve just joined here, thanks for the link Shal.
I have just taken over as owner of a group set up by a friend last year as a trial and am carefully finding my way around it.
I have a couple of questions please...
1... I want to ¡°vet¡± pending members before I approve their membership. From looking in the archives, it seems that I can¡¯t have a message sent automatically and I would have to do it by emailing them personally myself... is this correct?
2... Most of my prospective members will opt for receiving the group messages in to their email client, but a couple may want to choose to read on the group page on occasions. Is there any way to take off the ¡°conversation¡± mode and have each message just displayed in the list, not lumped together like this?

That is very helpful here, but hardly any messages in my group will have a thread.
Thanks, I¡¯m looking forward to your reply.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This change log for the last week:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

* NEW: You can hide the ID column when viewing a database table.
The ID is not a row number, it is more like a message number, permanently assigned to the row when added. Consequently it can be used as a reference when citing the row's content.

Alas, it isn't a permalink. Nor even a link to open the row. I'll ask Mark about that...

* CHANGE: Added a pricing FAQ explaining some features of the
calendar/events/RSVPs.
At the bottom of the Pricing page, naturally.
/static/pricing

Comments about these others are also welcome:

INTERNAL: senddigest service now using distributed nsqd system.
INTERNAL: DMARC lookups no longer caching in Redis.
INTERNAL: sendmessage service now using distributed nsqd system.
BUGFIX: When editing a message that had been transferred from
Yahoo, an error was thrown.
INTERNAL: Many improvements to the admin dashboards.
SYSADMIN: Moved several internal services to different machines and
duplicated them, for redundancy.
D'OH: Added missing pagination to Member Notices page.
BUGFIX: When removing/banning/unbanning someone without a display
name or user name, and if you have a user name, your user name was
improperly displayed as the banned person's name.

Please call out any you find significant.

Re: Email integration, what is it?

Doug,

When I go to settings, Member Notices, there is no where else to go
such as group guidelines.
Click the blue New Notice button. Then select "Group Guidelines" from the Notice Type selector.

Re: Email integration, what is it?

Is this service valid only for Enterprise or paid groups?

I am asking as the group I Co-Own is currently not a paid group. When I go to settings, Member Notices, there is no where else to go such as group guidelines.

I Thank You in advance for your response.

Re: Users having trouble deleting messages

Janet,

I'm in the process of moving a group over from Yahoo. I've got three
people complaining that they can't delete messages after they've read
them like they could on Yahoo. They all believe the delete message
thing was a Yahoo feature (a button) that they don't have here and
they're accumulating all kinds of messages that they can't delete.
Goodness.

I hope they're not confusing the group's Messages archive for their own email Inbox. I recall from years ago one tale of woe from a Yahoo Group owner who had promoted a rather naive person to moderator. Said person started reading the backlog of group messages and deleting them as he/she went. By the time the group owner figured out what happened a substantial swath of the group's archive had been deleted.

I don't remember if that story had a happy ending, but I do recall that back in that era Yahoo Customer Care could and would restore accidentally deleted content from backup - if caught within a few days.

Their emails are associated with three different providers (Yahoo, AOL
and Verizon) and I know at least two of them use tablets/phones and
one an old fashioned computer.
Hmm... The idea of being confused about their inbox only really seems like it would make sense for the Yahoo Mail users - they may think that since the group is no longer on Yahoo then neither should their Inbox be. But the users of other email services, one would think, would know to look for their messages in the same place as before.

Or maybe not, if they misunderstood the consequences of Verizon having acquired both AOL and Yahoo, making them both brands of the Oath subsidiary.

I'm having problems understanding their problems as I never noticed a
"delete" button on the messages from Yahoo and I believe this was an
email client function.
I'm with you. It is definitely a function of their email service and would have nothing to do with whether messages were arriving via Groups.io or Yahoo Groups.

I'd suggest that you ask them to send you a screen shot to show you where they're expecting to find a Delete button, but if they're this confused taking and sending a screenshot may be beyond their abilities.

One other thing to look for: have they deleted any of their own messages (messages they posted), as they _can_ do that in your group's Messages
list. Check your group's Activity log for that.

I've sent each of them a message asking what email clients they're
using and ...
Heh. If they have confused where their inbox is they may never see your message, or anything else that didn't post in your group.

Has anyone else run into this with their formerly-of-Yahoo user base?
I haven't. But then the majority of the members in the groups I transferred over were email-only, using non-Yahoo addresses. The few with Yahoo accounts to access the group's web pages I had carefully instructed ages ago on how to set it up so that they still used their preferred non-Yahoo email addresses for group messages.

Re: #Changing Group Photo #changing

deborah,

When I changed the photo to one of my own it appeared as a regular
photo rather than as a banner.
Did Don's answer resolve your question?

I'm assuming that the photo appeared in the correct place at the top of your group's home page, but was shaped as the photo you uploaded, not spread across the page.

In my YahooGroup if you change the banner photo the new photo is
displayed as a banner too.
Yahoo Groups will scale your photo horizontally to match the banner width, then crop it vertically if necessary to match the banner height, and allow you to position it vertically to select the portion you wish to show.

How do you get your photo to appear as a banner in the i.o. group?
Groups.io won't crop your image. Rather it scales it to fit in both directions. So to get a banner-shaped result you'd have to upload a banner-shaped image. That's what Don meant by giving examples of the image sizes he uploaded.

GMF's home page photo came from my camera as a more nearly square image, at high resolution. I used either PhotoShop Elements or LightRoom (I don't recall at the moment) to scale it to screen resolution and crop it to banner shape.

Re: Moving two groups into one

Mike,

How do I go about doing this? I assume that it can be done, just
doing two transfers, one after another?
That should work. In the "Go" message to the transfer agent specify exactly what content you do and do not wish to have copied.

There is a slight question about which to do first, but on the whole I think I'd say A first. The disadvantage with this is that B's messages will end up "newer" in the sense of having higher message numbers. But it means that any subscriber to A who had also contributed in B (under the same email address) will retain ownership of their content from both groups.

The disadvantage of copying B first is that without copying its subscribers the content will end up "orphaned" - no connection to a subscriber, which means only a moderator can edit or delete that content.

I suppose the best result would be to copy A's members first; then B's content, then A's content. I don't know if that result is worth imposing on Mark that much.

Assuming that transfers resume at some point...
