Locked A group for SERIOUS group owners

Edited

This GroupManagersForum is founded in the tradition of the on Yahoo! Groups.

Attachments are allowed and the judicious use of screen shots and other illustrations is encouraged. To prevent malicious attachments, avoid spam, off-topic messages, and certain kinds of spoofing, ALL messages sent to GMF are moderated. Despite these measures, be aware that the bad guys are clever so there's no guarantee that we'll always succeed; you are encouraged to be vigilant against any and all threats arriving via email. Your GMF moderators make no guarantees regarding the safety of emails arriving from this or any other 开云体育 address.

Don't post JUST to advertise your groups. Listing your group in your signature is perfectly acceptable, just make sure there's content in your post.

Do post something about being a 开云体育 group owner, moderator or member. What suggestions do you have for improving 开云体育? What works for growing your group? When is it a good idea to create an unlisted group? How do you manage the role of owner on multiple groups? How do you manage playing owner on one group and member on others? There is power in numbers.

Ask "How to" questions: "How do you do...[function of your choice]?" We all have to learn somewhere

Through the contributions of its members this group can become a powerful voice for education, quality, change and improvement in 开云体育 -- provided we work and focus on that as our collective goal.

How do you get members to join your group? #promotion

I think that this is an appropriate first question for this group because I'm sure we'd all like to see 开云体育 and hence GroupManagersForum develop into a healthy ecosystem. I'm sure we've all heard that a rising tide lifts all boats. So, has anyone ever started a group from scratch? How did you get members to join your groups?

Re: How do you get members to join your group? #promotion

Chris,

So, has anyone ever started a group from scratch? How did you get
members to join your groups?
I'm curious as well.

All of the groups I've started (except this one) are mailing lists for people who I know in real life. A family group, some PTA groups, some classmate groups. As such, those all had "natural" and bounded membership. The exception would be my test groups, but those I don't promote either.

As to this group, I sort of assumed it would eventually have a certain amount of cross-over from its sister Yahoo! Group (which I moderate but did not start). That group gained most of its membership, I suspect, by virtue of being one of the four groups listed as "Additional Resources" on Yahoo's help page for moderators.

In the longer term, the size and activity of this group I hope will track the growth of the 开云体育 platform, as more people start building more groups.

Pretty much likewise for the other group I moderate, Group_Help. That one is more broadly focused - for members and moderators alike.

Testing -- question about restricted groups

I just joined this group.

I am curious how the signup process works for restricted membership groups.

When I search for groups, I see "Public Groups". ?But, I am wondering if there is a way to find Restricted Groups only so I can try signing up for a restricted group. ?

Thanks.

Seeing the group members list and email addresses

I noticed that in all of the Public Groups, anyone can join and anyone who joins can see the email addresses of everyone else who is in the group.

Does it work the same way for a Restricted Group? -- meaning that once I join (assuming that I am accepted into the group), I will be able to see the email addresses of everyone in the group and everyone else in the group will be able to see my email address? ?Is there a way for Owners and Moderators to hide the email addresses so they won't be visible to everyone else in the group?

I am going to try posting these questions in the beta group also. ?And, I am going to try it by ""cross-posting" to both groups at the same time by including both group posting addresses in the "To:" part of the email that I send.

Thanks.

Change the " " identifier for this group?

I have a filter set in my email so that all messages with?" [GMF] " in the subject line go into a folder for the Yahoo GMF forum. ?

But, since this groups.io GroupManagersForum group uses the same" [GMF] " in the subject line of its emails, all of these messages also go into my Yahoo GMF folder. ?I can't think of any other filter that I could use so that all of the groups.io GroupManagersForum group messages will go into their own separate folder.

Would it be possible to change the [GMF] for this group to something like ?[GMF2] or ?[GMF-G] or whatever so I could filter all of this groups messages into its own folder apart from the Yahoo GMF folder?

Thanks.

Re: Testing -- question about restricted groups

L Jade,
I am curious how the signup process works for restricted membership groups.
You can test it and report back to us how it goes. I gave you mod privileges in my test group. Unlike Yahoo Groups, I believe the choice to restrict membership is reversible in 开云体育, so feel free to change the group's setting.
You may want an inexhaustible source of email addresses to go with such testing - the behavior is a little different if 开云体育 has never seen that email address before, versus if it has.

Interesting question. Might be something to suggest over on the Beta group.

I thought of doing something like [GMFio] when I had the same problem with my email filter. But I didn't like the look of that going forward.

Instead I just added "To" contains "yahoogroups.com" to the filter. Not all email software/services may be flexible enough to have two conditions on a filter, but you could probably use the To field alone to filter them properly.

L Jade,

Interesting. Editing my message while pending made a mess of the formatting, including losing the quote markers... Something to report in the Beta group once I test it a bit more.

I am using FireFox and it progresses down the list of filters, applying them in the order they are listed on my list of filters.

Thus, I could install a filter that triggers on the address that ends with groups.io and install it above (before) the filter you are using now.?? The result places the incoming message in it's appropriate folder before it would get to the? [GMF] filter.

The first filter could put the incoming message in the regular "inbox" folder or any other folder you designate.

Since the incoming message never sees your? [GMF] filter, that filter is effectively defeated.

Re: Testing -- question about restricted groups

Thanks Shal.

I did try setting your test group to restricted and then I tried joining using a different email address. ?The process seemed a little cryptic or vague and it didn't seem to go very smoothly. ?But, I'm not sure if I could explain what happened or how I got it to work. ?After doing the test, I then re-set your group back to being unrestricted.

I'm done testing for tonight, and at some point in the next day or two I may try creating a group of my own and doing all of the various tests etc. ?If I do that, I'll probably do some testing to see if I can create or edit the various messages that go out to people who request to join a restricted group. ?That is one of the issues that I have with Yahoo Groups and I'll want to see if the groups.io system works better in that area.

Growing a group #promotion

Chris Leong

I am the mod of future_tech. I recruited my initial members from friends and a post in the-tech-zone (which allows post advertising related groups). I also made a few posts in related communities on Google+. I'll probably spend some more time later looking for related communities in which a link to the group would not be seen as spam. Does anyone else have any thoughts on how I can grow the community?

unbanning

Hi.

Is there any technical way to unban my self.

Tried contact the ?/ mod of the groups.

But they say I am banned, and heard through a third party.

They have not contacted me at all.

So, is there a way to unban my self.

Without the owner, and will never get unbanned by them.

Any tips, tricks, or tech work arounds.owner

No, of course not.

The group managers have the final word. If they don't want to unban you then move on.

Re: unbanning

开云体育

This probably isn't the best place to ask, considering that this group consists of group owners and moderators -- exactly the people who do the banning and who certainly don't want anyone unbanning themselves.? Presumably the group owner had a reason for banning you (it might or might not have been a good reason, but it was HIS reason) and that is good enough.

A choice of two wikis

In the beta group Frances wrote:

I also like the idea of having a list of samples available for
list-owners to tweak / adopt if they wish. ("the curated list").
Rather than ask Mark to open up Beta's wiki, which he may have reasons not to do, I realized I've got a couple other options. One of them is to clone my YahooGroupedia wiki for use with 开云体育. So that I've done:

The other is to start using GMF's wiki, which I've also done:
/org/groupsio/GroupManagersForum/wiki

I'm more familiar with editing PBworks, and I think it is more feature-rich (e.g. an automatically generated Table of Contents for a lengthy page), so that was my first inclination. But there's no denying the simplicity of having the Wiki access control be implicit in group membership.

One difference is that PBworks' wiki is visible to the public, where GMF's is not, and cannot be made so (there's no selection for "Public"). This has its plusses and minuses. For example, a tutorial on how to sign in to a 开云体育 group would only be useful in a public wiki. There may be subjects that shouldn't be in a public wiki, but given that GMF has open membership, they probably shouldn't be here either. So at the moment the only advantage to GMF's wiki seems to be the convenience for GMF members (they don't have to obtain a PBworks account to edit the wiki, nor keep a bookmark or something to remember where it is).

Probably the most significant advantage of using GMF's wiki is "dogfooding" - that is, the more we use the native resource the better we'll understand it and how to use it in our own groups, and the better we will be able to report bugs and suggest improvements.

So my inclination is to eventually remove the Best Practices topic from Groupsiopedia, and reserve that wiki for topics that are more useful if they're in a public wiki. I'll try and remember to provide cross-links between the two when I do that.

Opinions?

new features of groups.io

Hi.

There should be a feature where members, moderators and owners of groups, can resolve disputes.

And also a place where ?is an independent umpire for abuse complaints.

Thanks

There is an "independent umpire of abuse complaints" -- the group owner!?
?
I shouldn't have to explain to anyone who belongs here that everyone in a group is entitled to an opinion - but the ONLY opinion that counts is that of the group owner.

Re: new features of groups.io

Xaun Loc,

There is an "independent umpire of abuse complaints" -- the group
owner!
I think Marvin is looking for a mediator for disputes between a member and the group owner.

That wouldn't go over very well with group owners, I imagine, nor do I think any service such as 开云体育 wants to be in the position of mediating such disputes. To the greatest extent possible, the service needs to stay out of the content - the cost of having staff to look at and resolve disputes would likely be ruinous.

So that part of Marvin's request I think will go nowhere.

The other part, about having a feature to resolve disputes, would seem to be handled by the +owner email address. The member (or would-be member) can contact the list managers there to plead their case. I'm not sure what more could be offered in terms of a feature.

Yes, looking for a way to resolve disputes with the moderators and the owners.

So yes, looking for a independent umpire to manage disputes.
