Re: Help with transfer of an "orphaned" Yahoo group #pgoffline

Adam Farson

Hi Chris,

In fact I have PA3DUV's e-mail address, both from the Yahoo group and from his QRZ record. The address is the same on both. He has not replied to any e-mails I sent, or even to posts on the old group.

In the end, using PGOffline, I successfully transferred the archived messages, files and photos from the old icom2kl Yahoo group to the Files and Photos sections of the new GIO group. As there were only about 650 messages, i was able to use the free version of PGOffline.

The message archive is in the form of 13 HTML files, each containing 50 messages. I placed it in the new group's Files section.

I also captured the old group's member list and invited all members from the old group. 120 valid invitations went out, and the GIO group now has 35 members.I anticipate that others will join over the next week or two.

Finally, I closed the old group. I completely agree that any group should have more than one owner. I need to find a co-owner for icom2kl.

Thanks to everybody on GMF for the kind help!

Cheers, Adam

Re: Should I be concerned?

I set up my group and paid on Monday night (Luckily). Yesterday morning I printed out Bruce's 16 step how to do it sheet (thank you so much for that) Got to step 12 last night and have just had the message from io to ask me to make them moderator, I have done that and authorised transfer. Now just a waiting game

I think it would have been much more problematic without those instructions in my hand!

David -- I'm at a loss on this one, especially if you want to get in under the $110 plan. You might have to email [email protected]?directly. A subject line along the lines of "TRYING TO PAY YOU" might get his attention.

Well, it's not a bug, because you didn't provide the expected format. But I'd like to think the invitation code should be smart enough to figure it out. Ah. That's a horse of a different color, as they say. Providing the actual symptoms really helps with troubleshooting.

The same person who started the transfer has to complete it. You cannot switch back and forth, because has no way to map one account to another, even if they both own the group. This has the side benefit of keeping two people from attempting to transfer the same group(s) at the same time.

So assuming you are the one who started all this, and suddenly you can no longer see anything in the Existing Transfers list, it's probably because you're now logged in under a different email address than you were when you started. The email address is the account identifier; and as far as is concerned, those two email addresses are two different people.

Please see the following wiki page:?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Group-Content-Is-Missing? The page does not discuss this in the context of a group transfer, but the concept is the same.

Hope this helps,

Here is the process. It is not fully automated and will take several days. Do not do anything out of order.

  1. Go here:?/
  2. At the bottom of the page, you'll find a link that says "Easy Group Transfer." Click it.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the subsequent page and click on the big blue button labelled "Yahoo Group Instructions."
  4. You should be at?/yahootransfer. Read the instructions carefully, including all the Notes. Bookmark this page, too. You will come back here several times.

  5. Create your group and configure it according to your needs. Help with group settings can be found here:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Quick-Start-for-Group-Formation [NOTE: Each new group must be reviewed to confirm that it meets the Groups.io Terms of Service. This alone could take up to a day.]?
  6. To use the Easy Group Transfer, you must upgrade the group to the Premium Yearly plan.?You can downgrade to the Basic plan later (i.e.: a year from now), if you want.
To do so, select Admin>Upgrade from the left-side menu bar and click on the blue "View/Change Plan" button. Select "Premium Yearly" (one-time cost of $110 $220) and make your payment.?
(You have now completed Step 1 of the instructions)

  7. Return to the bookmarked page (/yahootransfer). Click on the big green button at the bottom that says "Set Up New Transfer."
  8. Enter the name of your Yahoo group and the name of your group in their respective boxes. Do NOT enter any domain information (i.e.:?leave off?@ or @), just the group names.
  9. Click the big green "Start Group Transfer Process" button at the bottom of the page.?
(You have now completed Step 2 of the instructions)

  10. Go to your YAHOO GROUP (not your group) and log in. Send a membership invitation to "[email protected]." If you've never done this before, instructions can be found at??
  11. Return to the bookmarked page?(/yahootransfer) once again. Select the group you are transferring from the Existing Transfers menu at bottom right (pull down the menu and click on the group name). A new page will come up, with?a status box at the top. If all is well, it should say: "We've received the invite to your group and will accept it soon. There is no need to send another invite." If it doesn't say that, the invitation did not go through. Go back to Step 10 above and try again.?
(You have now completed Step 3 of the instructions)

  12. BE PATIENT. Accepting the invitation is the longest step in the process, and requires human intervention (solving a CAPTCHA).?
  13. BE EVEN MORE PATIENT.?Do not send additional invitations in an attempt to hurry things up.
  14. You will eventually receive an email stating that the Yahoo group invitation has been accepted. Continue waiting until you receive this email.
(You have now completed Step 4 of the instructions)

  15. Return to your YAHOO GROUP and log in. Find the "[email protected]" member record and promote it to a Moderator. Instructions for this can be found at?.
  16. Return to the page that you bookmarked in #4 above one more time. Once again, pull down the Existing Transfers menu at bottom right and select the group you're ready to transfer. On the resulting page, click the green "Give Go Ahead to Transfer" button.?
(You have now completed Step 5 of the instructions)

  17. BE PATIENT AGAIN. The ability to actually do the transfer depends on how well Yahoo's servers are operating. We all know what that means, right?
  18. You may notice some activity in your new group, which probably reflects partial completion of the process. Do not panic. This is what you wanted to happen!
  19. When the transfer is done, you will receive an email from summarizing what it was able to transfer. It will also list whatever things it was?NOT?able to transfer. Until this email is received, you aren't done yet.
  20. Rejoice.
Most of us have "been there" with this process before and it all sounds easy in hindsight. Ironically, the same thing that's causing most people to abandon Y!G (server downtime) is exactly the same thing most likely to get in the way of completing the transfer process.?The best time to initiate a transfer is when Yahoo is performing well.?If you procrastinate until things are crashing and burning, delays, incomplete transfers, and other such frustrations can be expected.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

3. Has anybody come up with a way to map g.io message numbers to the original Y!G #s?
If anyone has done such a thing, it has not been reported since I've been here (approx 2 years).
So will it be a fixed offset, i.e.
Y!G??? GIO
300??? 125
325??? 150

etc? If so, we could put that offset in the header page or similar.

Second question: Could we specify a starting offset greater than the max Y!G #; that would avoid any confusion:
Y!G??? GIO
300??? 10125
325??? 10150
