Re: Changing group owners

Brian,
?
While the actions may be simple, finding them is not, or it sure is *&%$ not for me, and I'm a "digger."? ?
Perhaps part of the problem you and others have had was that the semantics of "changing the owner" or "transferring ownership" puts one on the wrong foot for spotting the capability. There isn't a "the" owner, nor is there a single function to "transfer" the role from one person to another. There is just the Role option in each member's page (from the Members list).
?
You're not the first and undoubtedly won't be the last to have missed that function. Moderators coming in from Yahoo Groups tend to see it as "obvious" because that system has the very same Role mechanism, but that doesn't mean that it is obvious..
?
I'm not entirely certain how to improve matters, in this case or in the more general case of? a mismatch between a user's mental model and the system's design. Such mismatches are a common impediment to discoverability, in both the live system and the formal documentation. It is difficult for a developer or a tech writer to even imagine the set of all users' initial (naive, in the non-derogatory sense) mental models.
?
As a point solution to this question, it sounds like the Member Management subheading in GMF's wiki could use an item named "Change or Transfer Ownership", together with a backing page.
?
Having to run around to various group wikis, including the one for this on, is no reasonable or logical way to create formal documentation.? ?
I disagree. It may not be a reasonable substitute for formal documentation, but the world isn't reasonable (resources are always constrained) so crowd-sourced documentation, informal though it may be, is both a reasonable and logical accommodation to that reality.
?
I'm glad that Mark is finally getting to the stage where he thinks things are stable enough, and the service mature enough, to do what mature services do. ?
Agreed. I'm eager to see how, and how soon, this unfolds.
?
I've no idea what form the new manual will take (presumably not the traditional paper-bound tome), but I expect that GMF's wiki will continue to be a valuable resource, even as some of its content is replaced by citations to the new primary source material.

Bruce,
? ? ? ? ? ? The only argument I have with what you said is characterizing Groups.io as being in beta testing in any sense of that word that was ever used in my decades as a developer.? ?This platform has been stable, very stable, for quite a while now and additional feature requests being added, sometimes rapidly.? That does not make the whole enterprise "beta" by any means. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?I also doubt that the beta group name will ever change.? ?It, like so many other things in this world, will become an anachronism that remains because those that use it know it's history and name. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?The beta group is the last thing I'd use in determining whether or not a given piece of software such as Groups.io is actually in beta testing.? It isn't (at least not as a whole). -- Brian?-?Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763?? ? ? ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?~ George Santayana |

I think Mark would be the first to admit that groups.io site documentation has failed to keep pace with feature development. This is largely because the entire groups.io site is still in the beta phase...that's why we still have a "beta group." Those of us who rely on groups.io for day-to-day use too easily lose sight of that.
I'm hoping that as both site documentation and the groups.io app near completion, we will exit the beta phase and things will subsequently be rolled out in a more coordinated (if slower) fashion. Meanwhile, we are indebted to those who have taken their own time and energy to create and maintain GMF wiki entries. I'm sure those will be a valuable resource for the technical writer, at least initially. Regards, Bruce -- The system Help is your friend.??/static/help |

By the way, and I should have added this in my previous message, I can find no documentation on the Help page about how one transfers ownership.? Transfer of ownership is referred to, once, but there is nothing regarding how to do it.
I need to go back to Mark's message about hiring a technical writer to pull together a Groups.io "User's Manual," to see if he mentions having said writer take a long and careful cruise through the GMF archive.? That would be a very, very good idea to see all sorts of things that must be included in said manual. -- Brian?-?Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763?? ? ? ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?~ George Santayana |

I have a desire to do this, and there's not anything underhanded afoot, there was an oversight where when the previous owner withdrew they were left as owner, which I doubt they want and I know I don't. -- Brian?-?Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763?? ? ? ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?~ George Santayana |
Re: Have you created a Tips and Tricks document/file?
I think several people have made files specific to their groups.? You're also welcome to use the information in the Wiki here to create your own, /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home? Since anyone (public) can see this Wiki, you could use pointers instead of creating an entire page/file.
You might want to wait a bit though because a manual is in the works - ? No sense duplicating effort. Duane -- Help: /static/help GMF's Wiki: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Search button at the top of Messages list A few site FAQs: /static/pricing#frequently-asked-questions |
Re: Have you created a Tips and Tricks document/file?
Lisa, Have any of you created a "Tips and Tricks" type document for your group? Note the Quick-Start Guide and Advice to Group Members sections of GMF's wiki: GMF's wiki is publicly available, so you can simply include that link along with whatever other material you send to your members. You are also welcome to copy the information from there to include and customize in your own documents. If you have and would share here, I would very much appreciate it! Share and share alike. If you find anything missing, confusing or wrong about our wiki, please correct it or post about it in GMF. You can edit or create pages as needed to improve our collection. Locking a topic by e-mail: Is this possible?
Brian Vogel
Most of the groups in which I particpate on Groups.io have a focus on technology related to blind and low-vision related software and, on the whole, the vast majority of the participants, including group owners and moderators, participate via e-mail.
I was shocked to learn the other day that it is possible to "Like" a topic via e-mail simply by responding with a message body containing either "like" or "+1."? ? This makes me wonder whether a group owner or moderator can lock a topic via e-mail.? ?It makes as much sense to me that this be able to be done by a response to a message, only from an owner or moderator with permission to lock, that contains only "lock" in any case mixture of letters.? I can't find anything in documentation one way or another in this regard. -- Brian?-?Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1809, Build 17763?? ? ? ?Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?~ George Santayana |
Have you created a Tips and Tricks document/file?
Lisa Franklin
Our group moved from yahoo to groups.io about a year ago (so thankful we did!) but we still have a lot of members who 'remember' some of the old yahoo features and do not understand all of the groups.io features.
Have any of you created a "Tips and Tricks" type document for your group?? I am think of things like 'how to change your delivery settings', 'how to create an account', etc all in one place that I could post to our group regularly both for older members and new members to use. If you have and would share here, I would very much appreciate it! |

Thank you, Duane.
I see no reason for the customized rejection message not showing in the drop down Notice menu at the bottom of the message box when you write to a prospective member you wish to reject. However, I have tried a different approach and set up a Note to Member Notice, with a view to sending it as a standard message when rejecting a subscription request, but I found out that the system does not save the message. From the Settings Menu I chose Member Notices > New Notice > Note to Member > Add Notice, but the system did not save my message. ???? Marina |
Re: Integration with Google Calendar
#calendar
The issue with newline characters in the ICS file has been fixed (as mentioned in this weeks' changelog on beta).? As well as loading correctly in Outlook, it also now works when syncing to Google Calendar.
Mark believes the issue with 'all day' subgroup events appearing on the wrong (previous) day is time zone related and he will investigate further when he returns from holiday w/c 29-Apr. Regards, Andy |
