Re: Transfer problems #transfer

Thanks Shall.
We're a group of 150 retired men. The wife of one member got her husband in.
Neither I nor any of the ten members I had dinner with last night received that email. But those who have are confused.

No matter how convenient it is made, emails will still be going out with the original, "wrong" subject line.?

The same is true with the message editing option, only worse...someone posts a message, it immediately goes out, only to have the original poster edit it so the content is different from what everyone previously got. In this case the poster/editor has the option to re-send to the group, but many of them don't, leading to confusion.*

You can achieve Facebook-like behavior by doing what Facebook does...set everybody to "no email" and force your subscribers to read things on the web.?It's either that, or moderate all posts and send back the noncompliant ones.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

*I might actually allow message editing if there was a configuration option to disable "no resend,"?

Re: Moderator Permissions Problems

Members Visibility is set to "Owners and Moderators with the correct permissions",

I figured out my wife's deal before I read your last line in your first Email. She as owner had only 3 permissions set before I changed her to "Moderator". BUT, one of those was "Set Moderator Privileges". I didn't realize "Privileges" equated to "Permissions". I took off the check mark and voila the list went away. Why can't "Privileges" be "Permissions"?

But I still have Bart's problem. Not only do I "Save" any changes I go back to "Members" and re-enter the member's profile to be sure it "took". I'm too new not to. Bart is in Germany and I am in California (yes it is late here) so I'll have him log in anew to see if all is better.

Thanks! I'll be back if he still doesn't have access.

Re: Is there a way to move posts from one topic to another? #moderation

Shal,

Could not the 'split', then 'merged' (i.e., merged) topic keep the same name (or mostly the same name) but be distinguished from the orignal topic by using a hashtag on the original topic to set it a part from the moved message that was split off?

Or does that still leave a partial problem?

Just curious . . .

Groups.io icon - SVG format -- is there one?

Hi there,

We're in the process of replacing all the Yahoo references on our website with Groups.io now that we've switched. We have a Y! icon in the footer, which now needs to be replaced with the Groups.io envelope icon. Is there an SVG of this available? Or only the PNG that is in use here on the Groups.io website?

Thank you!

Re: Transfer problems #transfer

Norm,

Here's the thing. I did not give anyone the name of the new site.
The email that Groups.io sent out had the name,
...
Thank you for your interest in the ... group at Groups.io.
Ok, that message is not associated with a group transfer. That's the confirmation message generated for a web Join or email +Subscribe request.

In any event, only some of my 150 members received that email.
It would seem that somehow those 150 members became aware of the Groups.io group and took action themselves to join it.

But I'm a little puzzled that 150 would receive that, yet only one managed to join? That would seem to imply that the other 149 ignored that messages and instead contacted you.

Very strange
Indeed. None of my group transfers were beset by these sorts of mysteries. But then, those groups weren't very active at the time I transferred them. And numbered only a few hundred members each.

Re: Moderator Permissions Problems

Frances,

Could it be IP address?
Nah, if IP addresses mattered to web sessions there'd be immense problems with household, library, campus, and corporate networks that concentrate their users through a single router, almost always presenting a single IP address to the web site.

I wonder what happens if you try your wife¡¯s account somewhere else?
That reminds me of a related "is it plugged in" type of question for Paul: Your wife's email address, the one whose role and permissions you changed, that was the same as your wife's email address, the one you signed into on her computer. Right?

Re: Moderator Permissions Problems

Paul,

I set moderator Bart to ¡°view member list¡± and ¡°Set Member
Subscriptions¡± so he could help another member but he says the member
list is not visible.
In the Privacy section of your group's Settings page, what is Members Visible set to? If it is "Owners Only" that's the problem with Bart.

So I changed my wife from Owner to Moderator and gave her the same
permissions as Bart. Then I logged in on her computer to her
membership and looked at her membership profile AND all the
permissions are shown ...
Whenever performing tests of this sort always remember to refresh the page when you switch tabs, or windows, or browsers, or machines. Otherwise browser (or server) page caching may fool you. That said...

If the Members Visible is set to "Owners Only", then I don't understand how she can see her own Membership page. She shouldn't see the Members button in the left column at all. On the other hand, if it is set to "All Owners, and moderators with the correct permissions" then I don't understand why Bart doesn't see the list.

Assuming for the moment the latter case, if you mean that her permissions were all checked I don't have an explanation for that.

Did you change her role and uncheck her permissions in the same session with her membership page, or did you change her role first, save that, and then come back to uncheck her other permissions? If the latter is it possible you didn't save those changes?

and I was able to change any at will! Her ¡°Role¡± is set to
¡°³¾´Ç»å±ð°ù²¹³Ù´Ç°ù¡±.
If they were all checked that would include the permission to "Set Moderator Privileges" - which is why you would have been able to change any at will.

Rod,

Every thing is fine and the 'block' cleared up! No idea what
happened or why!
You have (at least) two subscriptions to GMF under two different email addresses. Which means you have (at least) two accounts at Groups.io - here every email address is its own account.

So most likely you were signed in with the "wrong" email address - the one that isn't owner of the other group.

Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

CHANGE: Improvements to the wording of the spam unsub email and
moderator notification.
Hopefully this will help reduce the overall confusion. See also:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Removed-for-spam and
/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/15036408

NEW: For restricted premium/enterprise groups, approving a Not
Confirmed pending member now automatically confirms that account as
well.
Wait. Wasn't this already true?

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Enterprise groups can customize the HTML on the login page as
well as on the send login link page.
CHANGE: Two factor protected accounts can now use Email Me A Login
Link.
CHANGE: When editing a wiki page, don't submit the edit on enter in
the reason text field.
CHANGE: When trying to change your email address, if you enter in your
existing email address, it will now display an error (previously it
was silently ignored).
NEW: You can now edit the moderator notes of past member records.
NEW: Display the name of the owner of each photo album.
NEW: New View Members moderator privilege.
CHANGE: If a group's Members Visible setting is Owners only, it used
to be that we allowed moderators with one of the member change
privileges (approve pending members, ban, etc) to also access the
Members list. But now, if Members Visible is set to Owners, only
owners can access the members list, regardless of whether moderators
have those privileges.
CHANGE: Don't create activity log entries for bouncing or unbouncing
someone in banned groups.
CHANGE: Title and description no longer required for Link database
columns.
CHANGE: Wording changes on Group Settings page for group/message
visibility.
NEW: For enterprise groups, add a link back to Groups.io under the
account dropdown in the upper right.

Please call out any you find significant.

Lost moderator and ownership of a group I started #groupowner

poikaa

? ?The Yahoo group for the SONY receiver, the ICF-2010 was having problems with Yahoo so I started a new one with group.io in December. All went well till just recently and I am still a member but no longer have administration control with the group. I did not originate the SONY Yahoo group, that was done by a fellow back in 1999. Him and I worked on the groups.io and that switch over was fairly smooth. I also lost membership with this group and had to re-join....
? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks Rod Wallberg aka poikaa

Re: Is there a way to move posts from one topic to another? #moderation

Thanks for the very complete answer.? The split and re-merge solution does seem kind of awkward, but I can see the logic behind it.

The feature exists, but as it stands it is far from facile or trouble-free.

What you have to do is split the misplaced message out of the topic it landed in (unless it is already stand-alone, or unless the rest of that topic should go with), and then merge that topic (the misplaced message) with the topic it should have been in.

These (in need of some TLC) instructions are linked from the home page of our (GMF's) wiki:
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Split-Threads
/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Merge-Threads

The trouble comes in if the topic in question is still active. That is, specifically, if someone replies by email to the (formerly) misplaced messages. Those replies will (most likely) have the wrong Subject text and become new topics of their own. Requiring further merge efforts. And replies to those replies, and so on.

If the group is fully (or mostly) moderated you can head (some of) that off by putting the correct subject on the replies while they are in the pending list. But not every group runs that way, nor are moderators always that attentive.

There have been some rumblings in beta about needed improvements, but I don't know if that's likely in the near term.
