? ?The Yahoo group for the SONY receiver, the ICF-2010 was having problems with Yahoo so I started a new one with group.io in December. All went well till just recently and I am still a member but no longer have administration control with the group. I did not originate the SONY Yahoo group, that was done by a fellow back in 1999. Him and I worked on the groups.io and that switch over was fairly smooth. I also lost membership with this group and had to re-join....
? Any help would be appreciated!

The feature exists, but as it stands it is far from facile or trouble-free.

What you have to do is split the misplaced message out of the topic it landed in (unless it is already stand-alone, or unless the rest of that topic should go with), and then merge that topic (the misplaced message) with the topic it should have been in.

The trouble comes in if the topic in question is still active. That is, specifically, if someone replies by email to the (formerly) misplaced messages. Those replies will (most likely) have the wrong Subject text and become new topics of their own. Requiring further merge efforts. And replies to those replies, and so on.

If the group is fully (or mostly) moderated you can head (some of) that off by putting the correct subject on the replies while they are in the pending list. But not every group runs that way, nor are moderators always that attentive.

There have been some rumblings in beta about needed improvements, but I don't know if that's likely in the near term.

that sub group to see it. We need a way to post swaps and challenges.

You can set the subgroup's visibility to: "Group listed in parent group, messages viewable by parent group members". That way all members could see them without having to join the subgroup. But they'd need to join the subgroup to receive the posts by email, or to reply to them.

That might be an advantage if most members don't need to post or reply to the swaps or challenges (I'm not sure how those work).

Hi -- I've managed email lists and forum sites in the past and am wondering whether I am missing a more elegant way to move a post to the appropriate topic?

So far, I've found I can copy the text of the original post to the desired topic and choose not to spam everybody with a resend, and optionally remove the original post.

So I've begun the transfer procedure. But my members are getting an
email that only joins them to the Update Group, not mine.

The phrase "joins them to the Update group" makes me suspect that what they've done is gone to the Groups.io site and used the Sign Up page to create a Groups.io account. The message in question would be the request to confirm their email address.

They didn't need to do this, the transfer agent would have created accounts for them. On the other hand it causes little trouble except possibly some initial confusion on their part (and yours).

I've had a few copy me on their email, and when I use it in incognito
mode, I do not become a member of my own group.

I'm not sure, but that was probably harmless. If they had already used the link in the message then it shouldn't do anything for you. If they hadn't and you confirmed their email address on their behalf maybe something could get confused, but being incognito would likely prevent that.

But the point is that you should not have expected to become a member in your own group merely from that message. To become a member they should wait for the transfer agent to do it, or they would have to use the Join button on the group's page, or its email +subscribe command.

Two members have tried to send messages to the new group, but they are
not members of the group, so they are rejected.

That's one of the pratfalls of announcing the new group name (email address) prior to them receiving the "You have been added" and/or Welcome notice. Either that or they could be posting from a different email address than the one subscribed to your Y!Group.

And yet, one member got on all by himself, having received the same
email.

That implies that he/she found your group's home page and used its Join button (and that your group is not restricted membership, or that you approved their membership). That particular member's membership settings will not be copied from the Yahoo group - delivery choice and posting privilege primarily, but also his/her join date.

If you just started the transfer, it may not be done, depending on how many members, etc.? If you set up a Welcome message, it will go to the members so they'll know the group is active. The one person that got in may have just joined on the site if you don't have a restricted group.

Yes, oops. I was thinking of the Settings page, I'll poke Mark to make the corresponding wording change in the Group Creation page.

I did a further search in the archives / messages of this list and
found a post of yours from Feb 27 that said private would allow
members, but not non-members, to view files, so that's what I picked.

Note I said "messages". The Visibility control affects only your directory listing and your messages. Files are controlled in the Features section.

sent to my group and when?

There are two: "You have been added ..." sent by Groups.io, and a Welcome type of Member Notice sent by your group.

Do I prepare these notices or are they standard notices Mark sends
out? Can they be edited?

The one sent by Groups.io is standard. You can't edit it but you can omit it by unchecking the bottom checkbox in the list of things to transfer. There's an example, the second message shown here:

The one sent by your group is it's Welcome message, if you have one marked as Active. Some samples posted here:

Can the invite notice be edited for all invite notices?

In the Member Notice page of your group you can have one or more versions of the Invite text you may want to use. The one marked Active will be pre-filled in the Customize Message box on the Invite page.

But as you discovered, that only controls the included portion of the message; you cannot alter the rest of the message. What I do is make my included content complete unto itself:

Interesting question. You probably can; see the Promote page for the things you can put in other web pages, maybe that can be adapted for home page use.

It is recorded in the Moderator Activity log. I thought it a bit peculiar that the log entry includes the text of my reply, but better there than it not being anywhere.

The reject page has checkboxes to bcc the message to yourself or to all the moderators (self included). I normally use the latter.

What I want is what I have on Yahoo: a publicly listed group with
members having access to ... old messages ... but people who are not
group members cannot view the ... old messages,

Under Visibility choose "Group listed in directory, private messages". That's in the Privacy section of your group's Settings page.

Note that you'll be warned that once you make your messages private you cannot later make them public again. That is true with Yahoo Groups as well.

text files, etc).

The access controls for other areas of your group are further down the Settings page, in the Features section. Of those only the Wiki and the Calendar can be given public (non-member) read-only access. Chats, Database, Files, and Photos cannot be made available to non-members.

Is this considered "private" or "public"? I would have thought it
would be private, but the wording is ambiguous - a publicly listed
group with public archives might mean either that non-members can see
the archives or that archives are available only to members.

I don't see how that's ambiguous, but in any case the wording there has recently been changed, replacing "archives" with "messages" for greater clarity on the scope of the control.

I’m in the midst of moving from a house my family has lived in for 3 generations. It has put me in a horrible mood that I am trying to direct to a good purpose by nagging about something for the good of the forum.

Please put thought into topic titles. This morning's digest has a couple of topic labels that reveal nothing about the topic. Some of us, including this old crab, only follow topics that apply to our groups. When you label a topic with something "odd questions."? That means crabby people get even crabbier because they have to look at topics that may not interest them.

Good topic labels are clearly not a big deal, but one of those tiny things that make life more pleasant. I admit that I sometimes am guilty of not thinking enough about topic subjects, and for that I apologize.

That being said, the helpfulness and level of discussion in this forum is exceptionally good and the content is great, which makes informative topic labels even more important.

Testing out my new group. I have a member who tried to create a new file folder. When he hovered above the "Create Folder" button he told me a STOP circle appeared over the "Create Folder" button. Is there some permissions I don't have set properly?
