Pressing your own FSO
Have any of you had problems pressing your own FSO?? I had problems on and off for years before I discovered the secret to consistent results - hydration.? Seeds are typically stored at low moisture levels of 5-6% to prevent mold, while 8-10% is required for good, clean pressing without gumming up the press.? So if you’ve had problems pressing FSO, I’d be happy to help troubleshoot.

Thanks for your comment. ?We buy golden flax seeds from a family-run farm in the Dakotas and my husband prefers them to the darker brown ones, but they tend to gum up our little electric coffee grinder, the oil making it harder and harder to remove the cap after grinding. ?It is also just plain difficult to clean the stuff off of the grinder blades, as well as the cap. ?I am hoping that your solution for people who press their own oil might work for us, too. ?Is it a matter of spraying water on the flax seeds or something equally simple? |
Hi Dean - Thanks for that - yes any tips to get the oil out would be most appreciated!

Yes, it's a simple matter of spraying water on the flaxseeds and waiting a day or two.? But I think your issue is a completely different problem and I'm not sure that increasing the moisture content would?help.? You could try though. Kyle - what kind of press do you have?? And have you had times where instead of the oil coming cleanly out of the slits in the bottom and the dry cake coming out the front, you get a sticky, gooey mass coming out the slits and gumming up the works? I buy flax seeds from a local farm as well, albeit through the grocery store, Askegaard. Farms I have never experienced your problem. Curious as to what type of coffee grinder you are using. I use a $17 Hamilton Beach grinder with visible spinning blades. All it takes is a little brush and a blow to clean. I wonder if a different source of flax seeds might offer better results? I do not think that moistening the flax seeds will help. I also get my flaxseeds from Askegaard.? I need a lot since I press my own oil, so I buy 30 lbs. at a time.? Organic and highest quality, highly recommend! On Mon, Jan 13, 2025 at 10:44?AM Rod Holmgren via <s4sindus=[email protected]> wrote:

At different times, before finding the farm in the Dakotas, we have ?bought both golden and dark brown seeds at a nearby store The latter were easy to clean up with a brush or cloth, but the golden ones were ?sticky, regardless of their source. ?Even a fine sandpaper doesn’t help much, but unfortunately, my husband wants to stick (not a pun) to them. ?Will have to wait till morning to check on the name of our coffee grinder. It was about the simplest and cheapest offered on Amazon. |
Thanks for answering so soon. ?After spraying the seeds, do you keep them covered or let them dry a bit, uncovered? ?I can see, though, that as you mention, it might not solve my particular problem, the results being hard to discern unless we get a new coffee grinder because the old one is so encrusted with oil residue already. ? |
I would try a different golden flax seed then. Askegarrd Farms is in Moorhead, just across the river from Fargo. I'd think their seeds would be available to you, but don't know exactly where you is. I have never had a problem with Askegaard, or Red's for that matter. Off topic, sorry. I never post to this board. Can I have the link to the group / main email address -- this is such a remarkable source for Budwig Protocol support & knowledge, but I am not sure how to connect people to it. Thank you.
