New gate code for phone number
3
Hi All, Here's info on the new gate code for phone numbers. I've tested it and it works perfectly. I've edited the message and put in Xs for our numbers. Ken -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Re: New gate code for phone number Date: Thu, 14 Apr 2022 10:03:23 -0700 From: Vergil Lafferty <gateadmin@...> To: Ken Cameron <rocks@...> Ken, Visitors can enter XXX and press the CALL button. That will call phone number 1-XXX-XXX-XXXX (the number in our records). After the connection is made and you confirm the identity of the person calling from the gate, simply press the 9 button to open the gate and disconnect the call. If you do not want to provide access to the caller, simply disconnect the call on your phone--the gate will not open. If the phone number needs updating or you have problems with using this feature, let me know. Our Roads and Hardpan
Hi All, Napoleon called mud the fifth element, after water, air, earth and fire, because his army, like many others before and since, frequently got bogged down in it. In most parts of the country unpaved roads commonly turn into knee-deep mud during periods of heavy rain, and in these areas, developers must pave roads in new housing developments. Most areas of southeastern Arizona don¡¯t have deep mud even after monsoon downpours, and developers can get away with leaving roads unpaved as happened here in Fairfield Estates. Why is this? It¡¯s because in the desert southwest there is a layer of cemented soil just below the surface called caliche hardpan. As long as the hardpan is intact, it is almost like pavement. However, if it¡¯s breached, then the soil beneath the hardpan is susceptible to relatively rapid erosion. The attached Figure 1 shows an excellent example of breached hardpan that can be seen in the cow pasture at the east end of Paseo Venado. The breached track can be followed about 800 feet north from the gate along the fence line. The photo shows that once the hardpan is breached, the underlying soil can be gullied. I don¡¯t know how thick the original hardpan was in the cow pasture, but Figure 2 shows that the remaining hardpan is less than 5 inches thick. Figure 3 was taken on Sexton Pl near the entrance to our driveway. Last time the road was graded, it was ¡°crowned¡± with the edges cut several inches lower than the center. The material shown in the photo between the road surface and the top of the hardpan is gravel and dirt that was pushed there in the grading. At least 10 inches of hardpan has been removed between the top of the hardpan and the present road surface on Sexton Pl near our home. I don¡¯t know how much hardpan remains below the present road surface at the edges, but my guess is not much. I don¡¯t know how common the problem is of ¡°thin remaining hardpan¡± on other unpaved roads in Fairfield Estates, but it should be considered in any decision regarding future grading. We don¡¯t want our roads gullied like the breached track in the cow pasture. Ken

Fairfield Estates Mailboxes and Speeding
12
Neighbors, The FERMID Board met this evening. We sincerely apologize if not everyone saw the notice. We were unaware the notice had blown off the mailboxes. In the future we will be attaching a sign to the mailbox barriers to post future notices. Additionally, we will be sending out notices over the email group as a back up to the physical notice. With that being said, I wanted to say thank you to all that helped get the mailboxes installed. It was a significant accomplishment, and though it certainly took longer than any one wanted, in the end we were successful. Regarding the mailboxes, there is already evidence that some individuals are driving up onto the concrete pad to attempt to check their mail from inside their vehicle. The board is respectfully asking individuals to park their cars and exit their vehicles to check their mail. There is to great a potential for a car to hit the mail boxes if you attempt to pull up close enough to check your mail without exiting your vehicle. We feel to much effort and money has been spent to have our new mailboxes damaged in this fashion. Secondly, there has been a few concerns with vehicles speeding down Fairfield and Paseo Venado. Again, the board is respectfully asking that residents of the district as well as their guests please obey the posted speed limit. As an added incentive, the board is exploring installing speed humps to encourage vehicles to slow down. This will be a discussion at the next board meeting. As always thank you all for the support this neighborhood shows each other and we look forward to continuing to improve our district. Respectfully, Matthew Paddock

Mail Boxes Update
18
Fellow Neighbors, I am sure everyone is ready to be able to use our mailboxes. I wanted to send out an update. Last week we checked in with the post office and we¡¯re informed that all the names were sent up a few weeks ago. However the individual that was to put our names into the system has been out sick. They were expected back this week and we should see a notice from the post office in the next 3 weeks. I for one greatly appreciate everyone¡¯s patience as we get this figured out and if more information comes out I will be sure to pass it along. Matthew Paddock

Parcel Lockers and Mailboxes Update
9
Hi All, I talked to the Postmaster today when I was picking up the keys to our new mailbox. He said the parcel lockers have been ordered, and he expects them to be installed in a couple weeks. He¡¯s having them installed. For the past few days I¡¯ve seen letters on "USPS Informed Delivery" that have been sent to us but haven¡¯t arrived. In fact, we¡¯ve haven¡¯t received letters in our PO box since about mid-last-week, but we have been getting parcels at the post office including today. When I opened our new Fairfield Estates mailbox this afternoon, I found the missing letters. Apparently, we have mail delivery now but not parcels. If you are missing letters, I suggest you check your new mailbox. It's been a long time coming! Ken

Fairfield mail box Information request ASAP

We need to get a list of all Fairfield residents that would like to have mail transferred from their PO box to the new mailbox on the street. Please include your name, physical address, p.o. box number. The post office has instructed us that they will assign mail from your PO box to the new street mailbox and provide you a new key. New Mailboxes
4
I just happened to be riding by the new mailboxes yesterday, and our postal carrier was looking at them. I asked if there was any paperwork on them and he said no. I think he was actually surprised to see the boxes. Presumably someone will be contacting us to find out who will be receiving mail at our street addresses. Ken

Schedule for Mailboxes?
8
Jimmy, Will you give us an update on the progress of the mailboxes and an approximate date when we might actually expect to receive mail in them? Has a proposal been sent to the 3 Canyons MDC? Have addresses been obtained for the undeveloped lots? No one has yet contacted me asking who would be receiving mail at our street address. The Postmaster told me that¡¯s a step that can be done well before the boxes are installed because it takes the USPS a couple months to the get the names and addresses in their system. I don¡¯t mean to sound impatient, but I initiated the project to get mailboxes for Fairfield Estates on September 17, 2020 when I contacted the 3 Canyons MDC to see what their requirements were for cluster mailboxes. Thanks, Ken

Supercell and microbursts
2
Hi All, Two weeks ago yesterday, September 7, we were hit by a supercell thunderstorm, the least common and potentially most severe type of thunderstorm (Wikipedia description below). I was sitting outside watching the lighting and took the attached photo about 7pm with my iPhone. I would have taken a better, wider angle, photo with my camera, but I really didn¡¯t understand what I was seeing. Nevertheless, the photo shows three parts of the supercell. Shortly after that photo was taken, we had pea-size hail and three-quarters of an inch of precipitation that came down at the rate of 4¡±/hour. Apparently they had quarter-size hail in Bisbee that broke skylights. The next day I notice that the tall grass around the house was beat down in spots. A few days later Teresa and Mark told me that they noticed that a couple of our roof tiles were displaced. The roofer was here for repairs today, and he reattached eight tiles. He said the damage was caused by a microburst, which is a strong downburst of wind that commonly accompanies supercells. So, you might want to check your roofs. Ken From Wikipedia: ¡°A supercell is a thunderstorm characterized by the presence of a mesocyclone: a deep, persistently rotating updraft. For this reason, these storms are sometimes referred to as rotating thunderstorms. Of the four classifications of thunderstorms (supercell, squall line, multi-cell, and single-cell), supercells are the overall least common and have the potential to be the most severe. Supercells are often isolated from other thunderstorms, and can dominate the local weather up to 32 kilometres (20 mi) away. They tend to last 2¨C4 hours.¡±

Status of the mailboxes project?
7
I think that it¡¯s fair to say that practically everyone in Fairfield Estates wants mailboxes, so I¡¯m requesting information from the Board on the present status and plans for the mailboxes project. Up to a couple weeks ago, the site we voted for in the May meeting, that is, on the west side of Fairfield near the intersection with 3 Canyons, was marked with yellow tape. The tattered remains of that tape have now been moved to posts on the east side of the road, and one of those posts is on school district property, about 10 feet beyond the property line. Does that indicate that the site for the mailboxes has changed? If so, was the change voted on by the community? Personally, I think that a site on the east side of the road largely on school district property is a better than one the west side of the road because an east side site is potentially larger. Nevertheless, if the proposed site has changed, I¡¯m curious about the process . There are a number of steps and actions that need to be completed before the mailboxes are installed and operational. These are the steps and actions that I know of. Some must be done in order (1) The Postmaster approved the site on the west side of the road. If the proposed site has changed, he will need to approve the new site. (2) The 3 Canyons MDC must approve the site after the Postmaster has. They only meet once a month so this will take some time. (3) Have the mailboxes and parcel lockers been ordered? If so what size (that is, number of tenant doors) and how many? E-commerce is going to continue to grow, and the USPS is reorienting itself towards package delivery, so one or more parcel lockers is important. (4) Installation of the boxes. (5) The Postmaster wants addresses for all the homes and vacant lots in Fairfield Estates. The vacant lots don¡¯t have addresses, and I wasn¡¯t able to have the County assign addresses. In May I gave the Postmaster a list of the parcel numbers of all the vacant lots, and he was going to try to have addresses assigned. I don¡¯t know the outcome of that but will ask. (6) The Postmaster needs the addresses of all the homes and the names of everyone in the homes who will be receiving mail at the mailboxes. This information goes to Phoenix and takes a couple months to be processed. (7) The Postmaster assigns boxes and passes out keys. The work party that cleared the shoulders of Fairfield in the spring showed what this community can do when it works together. I trust the mailboxes project can be completed in that same spirit. Who is going to do what, and when? I¡¯m willing and eager to do whatever is necessary to move the project along in a timely manner. What can I do? Thanks, Ken
