Zebra Stripes fixed in my 857D
n8yg
Well I've had my 857D for about 9 years and finally took it apart to see if I could fix the zebra stripes.?
It took a little patience taking it apart but not too bad.? There is an ASIC display driver on a polyimid flex that connects to the circuit board. By re-flowing the connections on the flex to the circuit board All the stripes were gone.? I used a hot air rework tool that I had bought on Amazon and did left side contacts then right so the flex would not pop all the connections off.? Hopefully it will retain for another 9 years. Not sure why this happens.. perhaps a bad type of solder??? This was a fairly easy fix so thought I would share.? Perhaps everyone has already done this.? 73 Brad N8YG |
开云体育Any pics? ?I “fixed” mine by buying another $160 lcd module... but I don’t think I threw away the “bad” one as I have two 857’s and you never know when you will not be able to get parts.James, KB8VUC On Apr 28, 2020, at 9:48 AM, n8yg via <n8yg@...> wrote:

Thank you for the post. I have loaned out my 857 to a newer ham. When I get it back, I'll bring it to work where we have hot air rework stations.? The idea of working one side, then the other, will be helpful.? Mark, N0MTN?

Brad, you may want to set up shop and fix these for folks. I would pay?some good cash to have mine fixed if it were that way.?Your method of repair sounds stable. Thanks for sharing.?

I unfortunately didn't take pics. That was a bone head move for sure...and I always take too many pictures per my better half..lol..
The solder looked like it had flux all over it and as I reflowed it, it? turned shinier....perhaps some impurity in the original process. I did see there is a guy fixing these for $250.00 but I thought he was replacing the lcd and board. Anyway I do have years of experience with surface mount and equipment but I do think it was reasonably easy.? I am not looking to set up shop.. Just enjoy sharing. 73 Brad N8YG |

Good work. Did the flex/ribbon cable not melt when you hit it with hot air? Regards Theo VK5IR On Wed, Apr 29, 2020 at 4:02 AM n8yg via <n8yg=[email protected]> wrote: Well I've had my 857D for about 9 years and finally took it apart to see if I could fix the zebra stripes.? |

Theo & all, I aimed the hot air at the connection point and kept is moving a little.. enough hot air to just? reflow? the solder but not scorch things.
No one was more surprised than me that it worked. I did not touch the hot air to the connections to the lcd. just the pcb.? Your mileage may vary.. I just hope that this helps someone out there.? I love my 857D and was slightly panicked when it was discontinued as I was concerned about no repair parts..? ?So with the pandemic and all I haven't driven the car for weeks so figured it was time to take it out of the car and give it a try at fixing it before ordering a new board. I was very happy.? I just wish I had video taped the whole process, but did not because I didn't think it would work quite frankly.? -- 73 Brad N8YG |
开云体育That's awesome. When I heard the 857 was officially discontinued, I bought another control head because mine started having the stripes. I'm going to try this on the bad one to see if it clears it up. Not a bad idea to have a spare. Do you have any pics of where you reflowed the solder? Thanks for sharing this. 73, --Hank KB4MTO / TA5ZC ---

You actually have to deconstruct a bit further. on the picture on the right there is a black paper tab in the middle that is stuck to the bottom of the board.. Carefully peel that back.. from the back side of the board and then you can switng up the display.. Note there are 2 white tabs that have to be slid out of the pcb to accomdate that. Once they are out.. the whole lcd can be hinged up. The flex board with the ASIC on it iis exposed and the connection to the LCD with this flex.?
Once you see that, you can see where this flex connects to the PCB. That's where I reflowed.? The picture shows the black paper that has the tab in the center.? ?Be careful with the display at this point.. as the filter with flop around.. Still not complicated. but it may sound it.? -- 73 Brad N8YG |
开云体育I’m not sure where I found this link. It may have been FB.? On Apr 29, 2020, at 5:18 PM, Howard Waxman, WZ4K <wz4k@...> wrote:

Joe - here is a much better alternative:
Whether I'm successful or not re-flowing the display connection, I ordered a replacement...the amazing thing is that, with exchange rates and a discount code, it was $60 cheaper than HRO! $142 Does not include the case, knobs, dials, etc...which you do not need to replace. I think there is a 4-pin connector that will need to be de and re-soldered - other than than it is a drop-in replacement. |

Brad - I did - waiting for the monsoon to subside before I swim out to the truck! |
Try call Yaesu directly. That is the route I went when both mine had zebra strips and Yaesu was cheaper than the third party places.
