+ AA6YQ comments below As I recall it was much earlier CHIRP versions that wrote the EEPROM and risk bricking the FT-857D and perhaps the FT-897D as well. Have no knowledge of HRD causing any such

I think NBEMS/FLDIGI will do what you want. Its a bit of a mess to setup initially, but after that its good. The whole suite is FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLRIG. FLRIG is preferred by many but not required. On
