Re: Old HRD version (prior to 6.3.0.410) may damage. 857

Some emailed me (spam?), asking me why not get a new SDR rig.
For me, 857 is a gem - I got three options (CW and SSB Collins mechanical filters and TXO which is a must for digital) and its size and weight outshines many new rigs.

Thank you for all the help!!

I use HRD Deluxe (Current version) with FT-3000 at my home QTH. It just works great, and wouldn't part with it.

My laptop with old HRD and 857 is mainly for portable operation. It would be hard for me to set all those settings without HRD rig control. The culprit for potential problem seems accumulative flashing of epro.m, my usage is rather low (couple weeks per year), I plan to continue to use it as it is.

Again, Thanks ALL

I think NBEMS/FLDIGI will do what you want. Its a bit of a mess to setup initially, but after that its good. The whole suite is FLDIGI/FLMSG/FLRIG. FLRIG is preferred by many but not required.

Because new HRD Radio Control looses some control buttons and radio control sliders totally, I have been using an old? version HRD(627) with my 857D.

I was told today that old version HRD may damage 857 (memory device). My use of 857 is primarily for CW, FT8, and VHF/UHF FM, and HRD is just handy to control the rig.

Do anyone have such bad experiences with 857 and HRD Radio Control?

+ The FT-857's Electrically Erasable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) is only guaranteed to support 1 million write operations. Years ago, Yaesu announced that they are unable to obtain replacement EEPROMs, so if your FT-857 fails, it will not be repairable.

+ Transceiver control applications that employ undocumented CAT commands to modify the EEPROM can cause it to fail.

+ The same problem exists with the FT-817.
