Re: HRD and RIG control #software

I suggest that RF in the shack is the problem. Try some Ferrites on the USB cable and also some clamp ons on the antenna coax.

857D in progress...

Hello Gentlemen, short update on the 857. Got the random wire up, sloper,? 107 feet long about 50 feet up. Run several counterpoise, need to work on their length, SWR is not very good. The tuner will bring in strong signals but not weak ones. Have enjoyed the stations that I get!! Sincere thanks to all the group, Hank, Jim really appreciate the time and knowledge you shared?
. Best regards, blessing to all. KM4NCI.??

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Update:

I was on 80m a few nights ago and all the feedback I got seemed to indicate my distorsion issue was gone. Some even chimed in to let me tweak some menu parameters to make it sound "great".? I was happy as a clam!

I was on for a little over an hour, and then suddenly people said the radio was back to sounding horrible.??

Needless to say, my heart sank and I felt I was back to square one. I've switched between three different MH-31 microphones and none makes any difference.

Anyway... that's the update

For Sale FT-857D w/Accessories Complete ready to go just add antenna and coax

Ham-Solo

Hi All,

Purchased this FT-857D from a Ham up near Seattle and had the intent of wanting to be able to do portable operations at 100 watts. After testing it and doing several activations at Parks and other tests on VHF, UHF, 6m and so on I just don¡¯t use it as much as I thought. I¡¯m very partial to QRP operations and haven¡¯t taken this radio out in several months now.?

FT-857D w/3D printed protective arms
MH-31A8J Microphone
CT-62 CAT Interface Cable
YSK-857 Face Separation Kit
LDG Z-100Plus AutoTuner
LDG Y-ACC 3¡¯ Cable for Tuner Control
LDG FT-Meter (SWR Meter)
FT-857D Circuit Diagram
FT-857D Operating Manual

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I've been experimenting with different combinations of Mic Gain & Processor Levels, and I can mitigate the clipping to some extent.

If I speak very softly and hold the mic several inches away, there is no clipping, but then the output level is also very low & weak.

I'm starting to believe there's just something jacked up with the circuitry and nothing I can do without some kind of surgery.? I'm pretty good with a soldering iron, but if it involves surface mount, there's a good chance I'll just make things worse.

I purchased this radio new from Gigaparts in April of 2007, so it's 15 years old now.
Maybe something has just given out after this much time (??)

If the mic gain was overdriven, I would expect it to be overdriven on all bands.

?

Have you run the ALC adjustments from the manual? 10 seems awful low for this rig; I¡¯m running the MH-59A8J mic which is a really hot mic, and my SSB gain is set to 27 after going through the ALC adjustments. My AM and FM mic gain set to 25, which was tweaked from help while on air.

Hi Larry,

No...I'm using the stock MH-31.

The distorsion at this point, seems to be associated with SSB Mic Gain and/or PROC Level.
The audio sounds "clipped" and overdriven.

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Thanks Larry,

I turned the PROC completely off and there is a noticable improvement. I also dialed the mic gain down to 10.?
I will be on the air with it tonite to get some real time feedback

Thanks!

Mike

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Hello,

For what it's worth, my SSB microphone gain level (Menu 81) is set to 50, adn the AM microphone gain level (Menu 5) is also set to 50; however, I don't use the processor because I received better audio reports with the processor off.? If the audio is clipping try turning off the processor to prevent overdriving the microphone audio gain circuit.? For a bit of added punch without using the processor set the switch on the back of the MH-31 to Position 2 (cuts off the low frequencies).

Larry

Hello,
?
Are you using the Yaesu MH-48 remote control microphone?? It's been reported that this microphone is more susceptible to RF that causes distortion.

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Thanks for the responses guys!

So far this morning I've been experimenting with menu settings, and by lowering the processor lever down to only 1 or 2, (menu -074) I can eliminate almost all distortion. Normally it is at 50%.

AM sounds perfect at 50%, so it appears to just be an issue with SSB.

The mic cable and coax have clip-on ferrite chokes on them and SWR is virtually flat 1:1.
Other radios on same antenna are fine. Antenna is 80m wire flattop dipole.

Still perplexed though...

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

RF is getting back into the radio (and mic). Put some chokes on the line or try another antenna.

Hello all,

I have a peculiar problem with my -857D and wonder if anybody can share some insight.

I'm getting reports of my TX audio sounding "distorted and clipping" while on 80 meters LSB.

This doesn't appear to be happening on some of the other bands. I've had several QSOs on 17, 20 & 40m, and all parties report good solid audio with no distortion.

Any ideas why something like this would be isolated to just 80m?

Any help appreciated...

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Since it is only on 80M and not the other bands, I would be looking for bad SWR or RFI on that band. I.E. It sounds like an antenna system issue.

The most obvious suspect would be CMC from a multiband antenna. ?What are you using?

Re: Distorted audio on 80m

Mike

distorted audio is a known problem due to a design choice which leads to slight distortions, but it is on all bands. if it is just 80m I suggest to exclude antenna problems. Use a dummyload?and a second station close to you to listen to the SSB signal on a perfect antenna. Compare bands.

If you have a spectrum analyzer measure:
?- linearity: So input audio signal to RF signal over a range for like 40dB
?- linearity expressed as third order distortion.
