Hi Kent,

Can be either, as they both really mean the same. Back in the 70¡¯s when I was working in the computer industry they were known as controlled.

I use HRD Deluxe (Current version) with FT-3000 at my home QTH. It just works great, and wouldn't part with it.

My laptop with old HRD and 857 is mainly for portable operation. It would be hard for me to set all those settings without HRD rig control. The culprit for potential problem seems accumulative flashing of epro.m, my usage is rather low (couple weeks per year), I plan to continue to use it as it is.

I was told today that old version HRD may damage 857 (memory device). My use of 857 is primarily for CW, FT8, and VHF/UHF FM, and HRD is just handy to control the rig.

Do anyone have such bad experiences with 857 and HRD Radio Control?

+ AA6YQ comments below

As I recall it was much earlier CHIRP versions that wrote the EEPROM and risk bricking the FT-857D and perhaps the FT-897D as well. Have no knowledge of HRD causing any such problem. At the time this surfaced CHIRP quickly modified their app to correct the memory write algorithm.
Regards, My FT847D manufacture date is in the first "D" model batch and still ticking without performance problem. It does have one pixel wide vertical streak on the screen at cold boot that disappears after thorough warmup. May all have an enjoyable Thanksgiving celebration, Phil / K4PO

+ The early version of HRD was the first CAT control application to exploit the work done by KA7OEI that revealed undocumented "read EEPROM" and "write EEPROM" commands, and reverse engineered the EEPROM locations:

+ It didn't take long for the FT-857 and FT897 EEPROM locations to be similarly reverse engineered.

+ As a professional logic design engineer, it was obvious that the "write EEPROM" commands were going to exhaust the chip's write budget (1 million), but my warnings were ignored. As a result, several hams now have nice-looking door stops.

Dave, AA6YQ

I was told today that old version HRD may damage 857 (memory device). My use of 857 is primarily for CW, FT8, and VHF/UHF FM, and HRD is just handy to control the rig.

Do anyone have such bad experiences with 857 and HRD Radio Control?

Re: would discussion of 897 topics be allowed here?

The FT-897 is a close enough cousin the topics are germain. I own both the FT-857D and FT-897D, and I owned the FT-817D. All are great radios.

Greetings from a new lurker. I have been watching here before posting, but haven't seen anything about the 857's bloated brother, the 897. I recently bought an 897d and looked on Gio for a groups specific to that radio but found none. Since the two radios run from the same motherboard, it would seem that this would be a good place for questions or discussion. If not, I will gladly move on if you can point me to the right group. Thanks, everyone!

Thanks folks! I searched the Groups and couldn't find anything 897 related. I'll jump there now, but will lurk here for issues related to the motherboard.

Yes

However as they are the same radio in a different box, with different display modules, any info on one is usually relevant to the other.

I would think that is fine, however I am also in the 897 group listed above. I have both.
