External meter and SWR range question..

Hi all -

Is there a reference anywhere to the voltage output on the Meter jack for the SWR?

I'd like to try interfacing pin on a RasPI to that Meter jack, and be correctly measuring the SWR, as the radio itself does.

For background - I'm interested in using the 857 and a Pi for somewhat remote control.
But I don't want to be transmitting into a bad SWR without knowing it, and I won't be able to see the SWR indicator or other means of knowing the SWR.?

It would seem logical that there's a voltage from (for example) 1 to 5 volts for an SWR between 1 and 5, which would cause that meter to deflect?
to the desired position.

I know there are people who sell expensive (for me, for available budget for this particular project) outboard LCD displays that do display SWR.

So, somewhere, there's clearly some way the radio provides a voltage that changes with reference to SWR, etc
Obviously something you'd have to have the graph of output voltage>SWR to know what to display...

Does that data exist somewhere?

HI MIKE/W8DN;
Tnx for the help, I wrapped the cables from the signal link to the
computer and from the signal link to the radio...solved the problem,
used copper tape. FT857-d running as it should.

I am impressed.? I am tempted to buy one now while they
are still available and just keep it on hand.? My radio's display
has a few missing dots but it isn't bad enough yet.

Re: FT-857 Display--AGAIN! ??

About a year ago I bought a replacement board and LCD from the UK (maybe $150 U.S. total) and replaced mine. No ribbon cable soldering needed, thankfully. Just needed to unsolder a 4 pin connector from the old and solder it on the new (may be a challenge for some) and all has been well.

I see Ham Radio Outlet stocks these at $199,95 each.

It isn't clear how this is connected. Does it involve soldering a ribbon cable on? If so, I have a lot of experience with soldering ribbon cables and could do that with no problem.

And I think I asked before but don't think I got an answer. Is a new unit likely to go bad at some point for the same reason the old one went bad? Or have they improved them to eliminate the problem?

I know this is a well-worn topic, but I am preparing to send my radio off to Yaesu to get the display repaired. Here is the estimate, based on my description of the problem.

Labor??????????????? .5???????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????? $? 35.00???????????

Estimate?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? $214.99+Return Shipping

Does anyone have any other ideas on how to proceed? I'm satisfied with this estimate. I'm guessing that purchasing a new control head would be twice that amount.

The radio works fine if I connect it to a computer via the CAT cable, but I'm going to send the entire radio to them so they can go through it and tweak it if need be.

Re: FT-857 Display--AGAIN! ??

Can't comment on the cost of display. I had the ceramic filters go bad on my FT-857D radio. Was not too happy as the radio was used at most 10 hours (it was my backup), but at 12 years old, any warranty was in the rear view mirror.?

Contacted Yaesu in California and explained the problem to Tim, their service manager.? As I recall the total cost including shipping both ways was around hundred and a quarter. That also included aligning the radio. Total time out, back and service was no more than 10 days.

My personal experience with Yaesu service is they did an excellent job and fully guaranteed their work.? Yes, I know you are not getting any discount on the cost of the display, but having them do the replacement may be preferable.? However, at a half hour labor, replacing the display yourself may be doable if you have good technical skills.

Using RigBlaster Advantage - on Raspberry Pi or Windows - keying mic misbehaves

I have a RigBlaster Advantage connected to my 857? - when the RigBlaster Advantage is connected to an HP Laptop - I am quite successful - Mic works properly (if I want to make a voice contact), and WSJT-X (for example) works great.

When I instead connect to a Headless PC running Windows (an Eagle4 from Prima Luce Lab) or to a Raspberry Pi - keying the mic does not initiate transmit on the radio. Releasing the Mic initiates transmit - and it stays transmitting (red light on 857 lights and stays on). Using WSJT-X - when the radio should start transmitting - nothing happens, at the end of the transmission, the red transmit light goes on and stays on.

Note that WSJT-X decodes data great on all three computers - up until (on two of them) the radios initiates transmit.

The headless PC has had a few issues that I have worked through - in particular some 'policies' that I had to tweak.?

I am baffled (and not in a good way)

Re: Stripes on display

I've cleaned many zebra strips on various LCD displays with good success. My understanding of the FT857 is that zebra strips are not the problem. They evidently use some kind of adhesive between a flexible bc board and another pc board. I don't know how to deal with that.

Are replacement boards from Yaesu more reliable, or are they eventually going to suffer from the same problem?

And, if I'm not mistaken, you're supposed to keep transmissions very short when working satellites.

Re: Stripes on display

This is what it looks like inside the FT-857 Display Panel

Re: Stripes on display

Zack,
The short answer is, NO, there's no EASY way to solve this problem, except replacement of the assembly.
Here's the longer answer, and the reason why.
The failure is a poor or decaying soldered connection between the display screen and its mating circuit board, inside the control panel. To the best of my knowledge, no actual parts have failed, so replacement of components shouldn't be necessary.
HOWEVER, re-soldering the pads requires a fairly complex set of soldering skills, and likely, specialized equipment. Not a trivial job, certainly not quick and easy.

Do some searching, and you'll find lots of other threads about this around the Web, and huge amounts of mis-information and superstition-based answers.
Good luck sorting it all out!

Stripes on display

I am sure this has been asked before, but is there a fairly easy way to get rid of a few vertical stripes on the FT957 display? The seem to come and go.
