External CatDisplay 3.5

I bought the display from Chris Day ZL1CVD. I highly recommend it. The display was very easy to connect and get going. The screen is bright and colorful. I also bought the 3D printed case for it from thingiverse.com. It¡¯s a great addition to my 857D.

A tram runs on track much like a train. ?It has 1 power pole up to a single wire?catenary?with the other side of the power circuit using the rails as ground return back to the power house.

A trolley bus is much line any other bus except that it is powered by 2 wire catenary and the bus has a pair of power poles to bring both conductors of the electricity supply to the buses electric drive motor. ?The bus has normal street tires, the poles are longer than a tram's or trolley's, and the poles can swivel to remain on the catenary so that the trolley bus can change lanes. ?This allows a trolley bus to maneuver around parked vehicles and other obstructions as well as being able to pull into the curb from the travel lane at a bus stop. ?

Re: Adding an AT-140 Antenna System to a 2018 Honda CR-V

Jim,

The window mount that accepts a rubber duck would be all right, but not for HF.? I want to be able to pull my car into my garage, and any antenna that's going to be more than 18" higher than the roof of the car isn't going to go through the garage door without me having to get out and either remove it or fold it down.? I had that problem with my Outbacker Perth on a trunk lip mount.??

I might go the trailer hitch path.??

Thanks.

Re: Adding an AT-140 Antenna System to a 2018 Honda CR-V

Hi Buzz,

Sorry, I confused the issue with the wrong nomenclature.? It is the ATAS 120 system, not the AT-140 as I put in my post.? Should have verified before I put out the post....argh!??

Thanks, I'll see if I can use my K400 mount on my CR-V.??

The best placement for a mobile antenna (if height clearance is not a problem for you) is the top center of the vehicle roof. It¡¯s worth experimenting with a mag mount, before trying a more permanent mount. Capacitive coupling of the mag base to body should be sufficient. Electrically grounding the antenna base, can cause multiple current paths through the feed line as well vehicle body. The current differential potentially can cause problems.

?

The second best place is the engine bonnet. If you do use the bonnet, add stainless steel braid ground straps between bonnet and main body.

Actually it is a good idea to add the straps, no matter where you place the antenna. Same for the hatch and exhaust.

Joe,?

Do you already have the AT-140 antenna tuner? If so, what antenna to you have? I have the ATAS 120 in my silverado connected to my FT-891. I had my FT-857 until a couple of months ago. The antenna is mounted to the back edge of the small door behind the drivers door on a Diamond K400 uhf mount. As long as the radio and antenna is well grounded, it will tune from 40 mtrs all the way to 440Mhz. If you already have the AT-140 and the AH-2B antenna, you can mount it on a trailor hitch or a bar mounted to the frame of the CR-V off the drivers side. just raid is colse to the hight of the roof. If you dont have the AT-140 system, you could mount an ATAS 120 on the side of the back hatch with a K400. Either way, make sure the radio and antenna is well grounded.?

I added a trailer hitch to my Subaru Outback with a removable extension so it will clear the hatch & mounted a motorized antenna to it. Works quite well. Only have to watch out when backing up! If you are willing to spend some money I have seen a welded mount from the frame on the left rear that clears the hatch & doesn¡¯t stick out.?

Not sure where I could mount this antenna.? None of the antennas I currently have will work with this vehicle.? I don't want to use a mag-mount antenna.? Through the glass antennas on the side windows of the cargo area are also out, due to the metallic nature of the factory window tint, and the rear window has both the defogger and the AM/FM antenna embedded in the glass.

Attach? your motorized antenna to a pedestal mounted on a piece of metal bar stock attached to the frame under the rear of the vehicle or put a trailer hitch on the rear of the vehicle and attach to its supports.

Yaesu FT857 CAT external display Case

For those who have the 3.5" external display here is a cheap case for it:
I ordered mine in ABS Black. Cost was $12.83 including shipping to Maryland USA.

I finally decided to try 2-meter SSB last night for the first time. I have had the 857D for almost a year and a half, but never realized it could do SSB on VHF. I did notice the frequency was a tad off from where it was supposed to be, so someone suggested I install a TCXO-9.?I ordered a Yaesu TCXO-9 from DX Engineering today, and am hoping that it is an easy install and will actually be worth the $110 plus shipping I paid for it.

Re: Yaesu TCXO-9

Paul,?
Thanks for the advice. It sounds easy enough to swap out. Tracking shows it will be delivered on Monday, so I guess I will find out then.

As for linears, I do not use them at all anymore. I played around with a 1500?back when I lived in NE Arkansas in the mid 1980's when I was younger on some "add on" CB frequencies and I ended up getting a visit from a couple?of representatives of the US Air Force and a couple of really friendly types from the FCC. Apparently, someone at Blytheville Air Force Base did not appreciate me on those frequencies using that much power with my Moonraker beams pointed right at them, lol.

They loved my station so much they took it all with them, lol.

Since then, I have never touched another one.

Re: Yaesu TCXO-9

I fitted the Yaesu TCXO-9. The fitting was easy, it just plugs in. You have to unplug the old unit and replace it with the new unit. Be careful to plug it in the correct way round. You must remove all power while fitting this unit.

While the radio has the lid open, take a look at the option places for two extra filters.

I fitted a 2.7 KHz and a 300 Hertz filter at the same time.

The frequency seems spot on with me. Note the power output on VHF and UHF can be turned down in the menus. This is advantageous for some linear amplifiers add on that require lower drive power. You can turn up the power, but the risk of overheating the PA stage, this becomes untolerable especially on the FM mode or data. The PTT line is available in one of the rear sockets to put the add on linear into transmit.
