Re: Homebrew Control Panel

K6XX is using CAT through the mic jack. Do I need to worry about any transistors? I think he did this to isolate the lines.

They are there to convert from RS232 to RS232-TTL. If I recall, the CAT cable has a signal converter in it as well. If you had a small cable adapter, you should be able to plug your CAT cable into and plug into the front of the radio. The same adapter would also have a place to plug in your MIC. If you have the accessory MIC, I think the UP and DOWN buttons don't work. I am testing old memory cells so you would be wise to verify.

Plan on the really cool stuff to disappear over time. While the links here are great, you should be saving the actual pages on your own system. I have stuff that dried up year ago that I can still reference because I kept a copy.

Re: Homebrew Control Panel

Greetings Tom,

Quick question, what equipment did you use to sniff the data lines?
I saw a reference to 64 kb/s which isn't standard. If I did the math right, I ended up with 5818 baud (11 bits/symbol).

Thanks!

Re: Homebrew Control Panel

Getting ready to back up the '857, do you have instructions you trust to back up the rig settings? Memory settings are of little importance to me, but those critical rig settings are and I've never tried to back them up.

Looking for instructions I found some neat data -

K6XX is using CAT through the mic jack. Do I need to worry about any transistors? I think he did this to isolate the lines.

He has an interesting 'quirk' page -

YO3GGX made a Java app to find eprom info

He has a link in the article to an eeprom map -

But still the only way I've found is to hold down the three keys to get to the hidden menu and write the values down.? IW5EDI made a nice chart -

Just a bunch of links but I wanted them in one place for my reference ;]

Re: Homebrew Control Panel

Thanks, Tom, I may well take you up on your offer!

So far your info is all I have found on this except Tobias' tweet from a couple of years ago. How far has anyone else gone with this?

YOU rock publishing this protocol. I'm really hoping it's not much different from firmware to firmware, I've had my '857 for over a decade...

It has been a very long time since I did any coding of this type.

For now I'm building skills to get there. I need to learn enough python to play with your scripts. Python is new to me so I will have a bit of a curve. I also have to put together a couple jigs to connect the radio and control panel to my 'pc' and arduino or launchpad. (My 'pc' is an Odroid XU4 running Armbian or Hardkernels Ubuntu 18.04.)

Basically, I'm doing my prep work. I'll buzz back here in a couple weeks when I have the equipment and courage to hook up the '857. I was kind of hoping to be a little less of a pioneer hihi

Re: Homebrew Control Panel

Hi Tracy,

that sounds like an interesting project! A Arduino front panel would be great.
Feel free to update the protocol documentation if you find something missing or incorrect:

And let me know if you have questions.

This tweet got my attention -

OE9TKH's QRZ page?

Has this link -

Has anyone gone this route? Does it look good to you?

I'm learning a little Python so I can play with his code. I think it is definitely in my plans to build an Arduino or 4DSystems controller.

I thought I posted a reply to this thread but it didn't show up.

The fan makes the motor noise, not air flow noise, so maybe it wants replacing. It is only small so has to work too hard perhaps, although I've had similar fans on hard drive caddies in PC's without the problem.

?

What I think it could do with is a thermal sensor to switch on only when it needs to like other equipment I've had. I did consider putting a series resistor inline to slow it down but that my have negative effects.

?

I don't know how old it is, I bought it second hand, the receipts are in the box in the attic, have to have a look next time I'm up there. There isn't a 'D' on it anywhere though, only FT-857 on the front and bottom, serial number is 71790151 and made in Japan by Vertex Standard if that helps.

?

BTW the misses complains of the volume turned up, not the fan noise :)

Some years ago I wrote a technical note which described, step-by-step,
how to make the 857/897 operate on Winlink. It should still be in the
"Files" section of the original Yahoo site for this list.

Re: Noisy Fan

@Philip, It's not the fan noise she hears, it's because I turn up the volume to hear the RX, she can't hear her soaps :)

I do have a separation kit but my shack is in the (small) spare bedroom so I'd still hear it. Other radios I've had (and linear amps, PSU's etc.) the fan only comes on when they got warm, so not straight away, this radio could do with a thermal sensor like the other kit. I did think of putting a resistor inline to slow it down, but I don't want to damage the radio, I know 'heat is the enemy' for any electronic components whatever the device, it just seems a bit overkill tbh.

The noise is fan motor noise not airflow noise. Maybe it's getting old and needs replacing perhaps. It is a Japanese made model and bought second hand, made by Vertex Standard. No idea how old it is, serial no. is 71790151 if that helps. Doesn't say 'D' on it anywhere either though, just 'FT-857' on the front and underneath, I haven't checked the box. The previous owner used it as a holiday (vacation) radio and it only came out the box for two weeks of the year, maybe they didn't notice or didn't mind, but it's been looked after and even had the filter change done by the suppliers, got all the receipts with it as well.

I was hoping it was a common problem and an easy fix, I know you can get quieter PC fans, arctic cooler for graphics cards and CPU's for instance, but seeing as I only have short overs usually and lowish power (never had it up full) it does get a little annoying. It is a tiny fan so maybe it's being thrashed that wears it out quicker, I've had similar sized fans on hard disk caddy's in computers but never had the noise problem with those, that's why I asked.

OM, My 857 is from the first “D” lot (ancient), but the fan is not noisy enough to annoy a bystander (XYL, et al).? Is your noise a rushing sound associated with rapid air movement or possibly a failing bearing or vibration?? Regards, Phil / K4PO

Hi Gareth, I’ve been wrestling with the same issue. I have been trying to use Winlink with my 857D but find confusion with the radio settings. Terms in the instructions like packet vs digital settings and the like are unclear. I find I can initially communicate with the Windlink gateway but after a few exchanges of code my system stops responding.?

Would welcome receiving any help you receive from your inquiry.

I agree with separation if necessary. I don’t mind my fan because it is doing its job. I have a Kenwood TM-281A 2 meter radio that I use mobile. It has no fan and after 20 minutes of rag chewing it gets too hot to touch. Can’t have it both ways.

Yes, it is a nosy and powerful fan.? Considering the size (small) of the the sink, you need to be able to blow as much air across that heat sink as possible.? The best thing to do is get the separation unit and separate the head from the body and mount the body away form the operation position.

Is it me or does the 857 fan make too much noise on transmit? It's annoying tbh and so far it's the only issue I've had with my radio, everythingh else is fine, it's a great radio imho. I only use 20W or so usually but the fan comes on after a few seconds and stays on for a bit when receiving whatever the output power setting, I'm using it as a homebase not mobile and have to turn up the volume to overcome the noise. Other half ain't too happy either, lol.

?

Anyone else have the same probs, is it my radio? Is there a fix (replacement) available? Be nice to sort it if possible. Ideas and solutions welcome :)
