Re: FT-857D Discontinued By Yaesu - Was a Great Run

John Geiger W5TD

I saw the FT991 as the FT897 replacement, at least in terms of size.? It doesn't have a remote mount faceplate like the 857, and it is larger, so would be harder to mount in many vehicles.?

I still would like to see a true FT857D replacement with IF DSP, CW memory keyer that does contest serial numbers, voice keyer, TCXO, pretty much a FT891 with 2m and 70cm, but without the software issues, and dedicated band and mode buttons.?

Right now there is no HF/VHF/UHF mobile sized radio with a easy to remote head on the market.? Icom has the 7100 but the odd sized head makes it harder to mount in many setups.

You can get around the noise reduction turning off by using the tunable memories and using the MULTI knob like a band switch, but the bandwidth still resets to default.

Gigaparts got a few of them last week, but they didn't last long. ?Fortunately I was able to get one. ?There could be others lurking in warehouses around the country that will pop up from time to time. ?Keep your eyes open. ?

There are Japanese versions that are showing up on eBay. ?Caveat emptor; the version for the Japanese market only support 146-148 MHz for the two meter market, with no know mods.

I??saw that also. Luckily, I was able to pickup one of the last FT-857D radios at HRO this past month. Enjoying it.? Really like this radio.

Wish they would come out with a similarly compact unit to replace it. Something along the lines of the upcoming ICOM 705, but with Yaesu ruggedness.

Re: FT-857D Discontinued By Yaesu - Was a Great Run

Yea, I was really sorry to see that. I got mine around 2008ish and I love this rig. I had it in my truck for about 10 years and used it all week to and from work. Every morning I would check in to the Treasure Coasters Net on 7.153. In addition to regular net check-ins, I made over 400 HF contacts with 90 of them being other countries, 68 of them were original countries.

I have a new truck that I have been waiting to get the radio install in. The display has finally started failing with the zebra lines (after 12 years of intense Florida heat). This morning I just ordered a new control head from HRO. I hope to get another 10 years out of it. It has been a very reliable rig.

The fuse looked ok when I took the top off, it was only when I tested it with a meter it showed up blown, the fuse for the cat port is near the cat port right next to a jumper, very small surface mount thing with a 3 on it.? the PDF is for a 897d but its the same as the 857

Re: 6-Pin DIN Interface has Stopped Working

I had the 13.8 volt output go dead on the cat port due to the 3amp surface mount fuse blow and my ldg yt-100 tuner stopped working. done a work around by soldering 2 small wires each side of the blown fuse and put a 3amp fuse in line, if it blows again its just a matter of popping the top of, replacing the fuse and away you go. pulling the cat plug out or putting it in with the radio on is what can blow the fuse as well as some say that a?motorized mobile antenna can pull too much and blow it. don't know if that was any help to point you in some sort of fault finding direction.

Unplug the tuner and go directly from the radio to the antenna.
